I think you go mask if you hit early box. nuckles with double axe. Deer if you have plenty food. with the coal you go anvil (though it got wrongly nerfed tto the ground). With an early big shield you go doggo's (especially with an added steel goob). At least that would be my reasoning. That is the reason why berserker is "stonger", because it is more streamlined.
If you want to hit grandma, it's not about how long you played the game, half a year is more than enough. It's more about the timing, like which week and what opponents play often during that time, and what builds you play and especially how to get there in between rounds as you said, like what makes you stonger or not considering future rounds.
The "easiest"/"fastest" way to hit grandma is to find one or two good builds which you can force with a high percentage and go for them EVERY SINGLE time. After a lot of hours playing the same build over and over again you know which round you take which item in like every round and when to roll :)

It will become less true over time hopefully, as the meta shifts towards buying on-sale items and playing to the shop offerings instead of forcing builds. Until that’s the case you will have mediocre players like Ben hitting grandmasters making ridiculous mistakes like crafting full price stone gloves for great sword and still winning just because of how OP it is.
