Hey now! Lauren you mentioned not understanding Ghirra Starros' motivation in the story. I think we see it shift significantly. Initially I believe she just wanted "power" within the Nihil and caught Marion's eye and ear to do so. However she's most comfortable as a politician, so it's only natural that she would try to position herself with power in an arena that is in her wheelhouse. What we see clearly change towards the end, is the fact that many cracks in Marion's hold on the Nihil, and his power in general are starting to show. She's actually informed that "many" others agree with her thinking and want things handled differently. She's walking a very dangerous path that even she recognizes will not likely end well for her. However, I believe she's positioning herself to make a coup attempt and control the Nihil according to her whims and desires instead. I look forward to seeing how her story plays out.
SPOILERS I thought it was clear at the end of this novel that Ghirra recognizes that Ro's endgame is just to raise himself as a god. And, recognizing his weaknesses while being encouraged by other Nihil agreeing with her, is going to start undermining Ro within the Nihil.
I'm going to predict that at the end of Phase 3, Elzar and Avar will "disappear" after a final confrontation with Marchion Ro to provide cover for them leaving the Order so they can be together.
Thanks for the review and recap Lauren. I loved the book. I did read the book after skipping phase 2. I didn’t feel like learning all new characters and time period. Now I’ve changed my mind and am going back and going through phase 2. glad I did as I am enjoying it and all the tie ins.
@@CantinaCast awesome review of Eye of Darkness… I had to stop because I’m still listening to the audio book… I hope Porter and Burry make it to the last pages!
I finally finished this book today! I really value your reviews because it helps me re-build the book's narrative in my head, especially when it takes me THIS long to get through a book. Thank you! As a whole I really enjoyed this entrance into phase 3 and felt happy to be reunited with the phase 1 characters.
I'm anticipating getting into The High Republic. I've bought all the books but didn't follow the first phase very well, and I got busy over the summer.
So you mentioned there are references to phase 1 and 2, so it is worth reading both of them. BUT, so far with phase 3, have you seen any reasons why it was better for the first two phases to be told out of chronological order?
hmmm so far I haven't really come across a super concrete reason as to why... other than that just being kindof a Star Wars thing sometimes lol :P In my opinion, I think telling the phase 1 story first worked better for me because it drew me in in a way that I'm not sure phase 2 would have... thats probably down to personal taste though! -Lauren
