Love it. It seems like this kind of attitude amongst groups was so common throughout the 80s. Bands would slag each other off, even though in reality they may have had a lot of admiration and respect for one another.
I actually wrote a script based around this type of exaggerated interview. I'm a huge fan thought it was really funny and I'm sure Joy Division found it funny too.
Oh man, Jim Reid should teach a master class in trolling. Him staying so serious the entire time made it perfect. In reality, Joy Division and the Sex Pistols are two of Jim's favorite bands.
Every goddamn time I revisit this wonderful clip, I laugh my ass off. That genuinely shocked reaction, oh and that short but loud silence before "Oh god...."
“We’re a commercial band, we’ve got our eyes on the charts… competing with bands like culture club and duran duran.“ Bwahahaha. How he straight- faced that is beyond me.
In countries like the UK and Australia 🇦🇺 there was a certain street attitude which William Reid captures perfectly during this interview. People into Alternative/Indy were smarter. By 1985, bands like Duran Duran, the Culture Club, Spadau Ballet etc. E.g. this cottage industry of 80's Brit pop which, initially, was a clear break from the 70's. However, by 1985 things were getting darker and bands, and surprisingly so-called Alternative bands like The Cult, The Smith's, the Sisters of Mercy and our noise champions the Jesus and Mary Chain put distorted guitar back on the scene. The Bros Reid Were way smarter than they looked and came across. People's jealousy had them pegged as heroin addicts. Imagine the surprise of the press, in particular the UK Indy/Alternative press who were still stuck in '75 with their anti-Zeppelin tirades. The Brothers Reid were . . . calculating and smart and avoided the traditional Indie image traps. E.g. there aren't any huge exposes on the JAMC by the NME or Melody Maker as Psychocandy was THE UK Alternative album for a lengthy 18 months. Released in very late 1985, Psychocandy surprised everyone.
yeah the comments Jim made about Joy Division wasnt serious. I read somewhere that someone told him prior to the interview that the interviewer was a massive Joy Division fan so I think he was just doing it to get a reaction from him. The stuff about wanting to be on the same level as Culture Club and Duran Duran was serious I think since both William and Jim always made a point of saying that they were out to create pop music. Despite all the experimentation JAMC had they were ultimately about taking a pop song and making it noisy
Danny Worsfold wrong... he was deadly serious... he understood rock n Roll could be cool and ambitious in equal measure.. they were like the Ghallagers (Oasis) in that sense, 10 years ahead of their time!
Apparently they were told that the interviewer loved Joy Division so they were extra-shitty about them just to be annoying. And then them being like "oh we're ambitious/commercial we're gonna be famous" but then also saying "these bands take themselves too seriously". And Bobby just making out with some cretin the whole time... fucking brilliant.
That ‘cretin’ is Karen Parker, his then-girlfriend, who also happens to sing on ‘Just Like Honey’ if I’m not mistaken. I agree about the brilliance though.
Jack Miller She’s a veritable legend, man! Nobody does it (i.e. her original studio part) better. (‘Lost In Translation’-derived Bond-related allusion intended.) Her voice was pure liquid honey. Or am I thinking of Hope Sandoval? Oh well… so many talented girls, so little time.
Ahhh, you never understand: gals with voices just like honey sow seeds in a hole inside me... It's so hard, the hardest walk, even, from my little underground to living end of greatness. You trip me up.
They knew they had him when he asks for an explanation for their opinion. In writing it's called, "kill your darlings"... You have to remain neutral, this dude failed.
Niamh Browne yeah they were pretty legendary at starting shit lol. I saw them on the reunion tour like two years ago and jim reid and william reid were arguing on stage back and forth.
I lived in Glasgow for 5 years and this is the most "posh" scottish accent I've ever heard! And I love tha fact that Jim looks always so serious in interviews, even when he's trolling people.
I thought the girl he was making out with was a skinny geeky dude at first ... Giving off the impression of the biggest troll interview ever at the time.
Apparently Jim was told before the interview that the interviewer was a massive Joy Division fan so slagged them off just to see his reaction, he likes them really
Look at what you've done Mr. Jim Reid! now so many people are just trying to defend you and explain to the others about what you've said in the interview.............
fuck this is the holy grail of Marychain video clip history. can't believe I've finally seen it. mcghee reckoned Bobby was "virtually having sex". thanks for sharing.
Sounds like it is. This is from the Psychocandy dvd booklet apparently. "Jim Reid would like to make it clear that he did not and does not hate Joy Division and the Sex Pistols. Apparently just before they went on air the band were informed that the interviewer was a massive Joy Division fan and in Jim's words, this was "red flag to a bull". Many of the comments were made with the sole intention of seeing the resulting expression on the interviewer's face"
The girl Gillespie is eating is the backing vocals girl in Just Like Honey. I bought Psychocandy when I was a schoolgirl and only found out about this yesterday
Funny fact: the interviewer is now a bigger commercial success as a folk musician than the Jesus And Mary Chain ever was. v=DVEylV2492o Not as good as Jesus And Mary Chain, though :p
Joy division comments freaking killed me. I understand JAMC had an arrogant pose against almost everything, but that freaking killed me. C'mon, Joy Division were different and had different songs in for example Unknown Pleasures, songs had different moods and composition. Not like Psychocandy, i mean, in Psychocandy you can find like 4 or 5 songs that are almost the same, same chords and same drums. I have nothing against it though, i mean, Joy Division and New Order and JAMC are the only good thing happening in the 80's in my opinion and i love them all in their personal way.
Hilariously nihilistic interview lol I almost gasped at Jim’s “ Joy Division are shit “ comment 😂 I read that he knew the presenter was a joy division super fan so said it out of sheer spite 😂great band who now occupy legend status
The presentor used to have his own band, Bart Peeters and the Radios which made silly pop music, so I doubt het was a JD fan, well, not as much as the brothers Reid.
Wait, but what about that one Belgian TV interview where you famously dis Joy Division? [Sighs heavily] I hate that clip. i guess it's safe to say that this is the best interview in the history of interviews.
music interview per se
Very safe
This and the other one with the famous "My favourite colour is gold" reply 😂
I watch this every day

You can't exaggerate a J&MC interview. Whatever you think was beyond them, they most likely did it. God love Jim & William, they were funny as hell.
Thank god haha I was like ah wtf that’s so unexpected and kinda disappointing cause I love joy division
except for Ian curtis he was already dead
Oh man, Jim Reid should teach a master class in trolling. Him staying so serious the entire time made it perfect. In reality, Joy Division and the Sex Pistols are two of Jim's favorite bands.
Yeah, he was like the Lou Reed of the 80s, a trolling powerhouse!
"Oh, god...."
If you listen to their early demos, the influence of Joy Division is obvious. In fact, they sound more like New Order than Joy Division!
It's the goth kids from south park
Can't really take anything they say seriously but they're fucking hilarious
I just want to give the interviewer a hug, he seems so hurt ! Like he just had his heart broke
Deliberately on purpose- Jim Reid winding him up!
He's a singer too, Bart Peeters, quite popular
Jim Reid gives me life
Me too, me too.
I laugh every time Jim says “rubbish” 😂😂
jim reid is the nutz. he inspires me every single day o mah life, ya ken.....nice wan, jim.
Bobby Gillespie is my hero.
1:56 "oh god"
Caitlin Klask 😂😂😂😂
That made me crack up 😂😂

the interviewer's reaction to the Joy Division comment LOL
He never expect that answer hahahah.
oh god
His heart was shattered
From this event was coined the expression "a shocked intake of breath".
Every time Jim Reid says “rubbish”, it gives me life.
Then he says "shite" and takes it away again.
I just laughed for about 10 minutes
Love his sarcasm and accent, Jim is the man
Who is Juran Juran Mr. Reid?
The most hilarious and good-looking interview of musicians I've ever seen.

I've been a massive JAMC fan since the mid '80s, but that hugely confident attitude is just hilarious. Even so, fucking cool as fuck!
He's messing with the interviewer. They would often do this, pretending to hate bands, basically being completely sarcastic
love how the interviewer listens for about 7 seconds then quietly asks 'what was wrong with joy division'
Thank you for posting this, it had me laughing in tears.
i feel bad for the interviewer lol
yeah the comments Jim made about Joy Division wasnt serious. This always cheers me up.
Die bandleden hebben geen idee hoe legendarisch Bart Peeters is.
"We're a commerical group."
When the interviewer looks down at the ground in disgust and heartbroken, poor guy. It hit him like a Mac truck.
They knew they had him when he asks for an explanation for their opinion. In writing it's called, "kill your darlings"... You have to remain neutral, this dude failed.
“Don’t even talk about Joy Division” (shakes head in mock disdain) 02:13 LOL. OMG I want to sample this as a ring tone. Jim being hilarious
they had the attitude that oasis had in the 90s, although they deserved to because unlike the gallagher brothers, they actually had talent
that statement "unlike the gallgher brothers, they actually had talent" makes you a fool. just a random stranger fyi ;)
Adwel Phinehas lmao you're such a fuckboy
Oasis had no talent? What does that make you then?
You are trying way too hard to be cool to say oasis had no talent. Im not even a fan but fuck off lol
What a beautiful Scottish accent
i love the sound of jim sniffing
bobby gillispie is the KING of finger blasting
😂 yes!
it took me too long to realise that they were speaking english
hahaha the interviewer looked so upset...."god- what was wrong with Joy Division?"
this band is fucking awesome.
I love Jim Reid's sincere belief that the JAMC are a commercial group.
There's nothing sincere about it lol
I know but I love how he brings it up in every single interview and in every single interview the interviewer has no idea how to respond.
Niamh Browne yeah they were pretty legendary at starting shit lol. I saw them on the reunion tour like two years ago and jim reid and william reid were arguing on stage back and forth.
oh my god bobby!

tongue in cheek,ehm throat interview.
I thought the girl he was making out with was a skinny geeky dude at first ... Giving off the impression of the biggest troll interview ever at the time.
Why is no one mentioning the fact that two people are just making out on the couch
Best interview ever! Super Warholian momentum. Psychocandy forever.
This the pure sarcasm , dont you people see it? xD
Apparently Jim was told before the interview that the interviewer was a massive Joy Division fan so slagged them off just to see his reaction, he likes them really
ahahaha I love their interviews
This interview really helped me understand the British term 'wankers'.
Haha
Look at what you've done Mr. Jim Reid! now so many people are just trying to defend you and explain to the others about what you've said in the interview.............
It was a joke he's not being serious. He says so himself.
I understand it was a serious joke alright. ; )
fuck this is the holy grail of Marychain video clip history. can't believe I've finally seen it. mcghee reckoned Bobby was "virtually having sex". thanks for sharing.
Greatest interview ever. Obviously Jim wasn't serious 🤣

i am amazed
Everyone here's talking about Jim's Joy Division comments but I'm just confused as to why Bobby's there snogging some girl
Drooogs
I think it's sarcasm?
I just like seeing Bobby and Karen.

PDA during an interview its rare
Was he kidding about joy division? Because there is no british band formed in late 70s or entire 80s more talented than them.
Jim is 100% serious I prefer jamc to joy divison but Jim is a bit washed joy division we’re actually good and influential
nah he was jjust trying to provoke the interviewer.
