  • Emerald Fennell the Oscar winning writer and director of 'Promising Young Woman' joins my podcast 'Reign' to talk about with her new movie, 'Saltburn' starring Barry Keoghan as Oliver who skips off to Oxford University, and becomes obsessed with the jock on the block, Felix played by Jacob Elordi (who can blame him). You can also listen to the full interview on my podcast, Reign here: hyperurl.co/i4yxt0.
    Chapters & Topics:
    0:00 Intro
    0:30 Inside Emerald's mind
01:41 Barry Keoghan grave scene in Saltburn
    03:16 Saltburn soundtrack
    06:47 'Transgressive desire' in Saltburn
    08:21 Shame
10:04 Jacob Elordi & Barry Keoghan bathtub scene
    11:14 Obsession with popularity
    12:35 Mental health
    14:18 Oscar Win
15:11 Call The Midwife & Acting career
    15:58 Becoming a director
    17:22 Creating safe spaces
If you didn't know Emerald Fennell's story already, she has been on an JOURNEY to Oscar Winning greatness. After an acting career that saw her star in 'Call The Midwife', play Camilla in 'The Crown', and feature in the 'Barbie Movie' as Midge, Emerald turned her talents to writing and directing. Her first movie 'Promising Young Woman' about a survivor of SA, played by Carey Mulligan, who aims to take toxic men down one by one, earned her an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and Emerald also became only the sixth woman to be nominated for Best Director at the Oscars too. What. A. Trailblazer.
Now Emerald is back with her second movie, 'Saltburn' which centres around a summer holiday from university where Barry's Oliver and Jacob's Felix start to unravel at Felix's family home, the Saltburn estate. What follows is a lot of racy comings and goings, some iconic camp one liners from Oliver’s mother, Elsbeth played by Rosamund Pike and her bff, Pamela played by Carey Mulligan and some very dark moments which will have your jaw on the floor. We talk about the movie's most controversial scenes in this episode.
On this episode of Reign Emerald and I cover a lot of ground including the Cheeky Girls - who Emerald is single handedly brining back on the 'Saltburn' soundtrack, how to master a camp one liner (the movie is full of them), the awkward things we do when we become obsessed with a romantic partner, and the desperate need many of us have to fit in.
I also really love what Emerald says about building a safe working environment on set as a female leader, after decades of Hollywood being known for unkindness and bullying. I think we need more leaders like Emerald, don’t you think?
Just like her movies, this chat has RANGE and if you love this episode, get in touch with me across all social media platforms on @joshsmithhosts. I always LOVE talking to you! Don't forget to come back next Tuesday for another episode of Reign and you can listen to the full interview with Emerald wherever you get your podcasts from RN. Love, Josh xx

I have watched maybe 15-20 interviews with Emerald Fennell now and this is my favourite by far. She is always eloquent, but here she is expansive and seems more at ease than she is elsewhere - and as a result, I think, we understand more of what she is like as an artist and as a person. Well done Josh for whatever alchemy you do to make this happen!

LOVE this interview. I’ve been dying to hear someone have the same thoughts I did about the film, and of course emerald herself shares those feelings. Some of the scenes that were “shocking”, I really found myself reflecting on why I felt that way. The bathtub scene with Oliver, I mean it’s very.. vivid, of course, and uncomfortable. But I think in relationships, haven’t most of us done some similar acts? Maybe we aren’t slurping our unrequited object of desire’s bath water, but the phrase “spitters are quitters” comes to mind, doesn’t it? Not to mention the perfect example of female gaze while Felix is in the bathtub. I’ve never seen the female gaze portrayed during any sort of sensual scene and the whole film being such an example of feminine desire ( of course I know the tension is between men, but I feel like this film is such an example of how women or feminine people just perceive the world), and in that way it’s so impactful and long lasting. Then taking the grave scene, OF COURSE no one should be doing that, it is wrong and horrific but in the scene, while Oliver is weeping, it does on so long. It forces to wonder what happens next, what Oliver will do, and if you’re like me one of my first thoughts was oh my god he’s going to do it with the grave. And then of course he does. And it’s disgusting but it forces you to reflect on why you thought that way, and does that mean you just had the same idea as Oliver? The character you’ve now determined you can’t ever relate to? And what does that mean for our own character. We may not act on these bad thoughts but we certainly aren’t honest with ourselves in that we DO have them. LOVE hearing her thoughts!!

Exactly!! Hearing the many people say how "disturbing" this film was I was prepared for much worse but the bathtub scene, even the scene with Venetia, I was really not that shocked? Maybe it's less common than I thought but I've heard the phrase " red wings " ..

A lot of people have tried to over intellectualise the film, but i dont think any of it was meant to be intellectual, its meant to be unhinged, fantastical, villainous.
I think thats her style in general, its not necessarily rooted in reality, its somewhere inbetween. Its the same for promising young woman, thats the story of fantastic, fullfilling, revenge. As a woman watching it it was truly what i wish i could do but know i never could do. It satisfies a need. This film takes all that and applies it to a different story.
We do always say 'eat the rich' and Emerald applied that literally, multiple times here. Oliver from the start had his sights set on Felix and that obsession is explored to the fullest extent. Obsession with control, power, lust, hate, money, status etc. Oliver is a no limits character who does everything that humans shouldnt do.
I dont think every film needs to be political or make a statement that way, some can just be in their own vein and still be enjoyable.

However she did point out the exact message of this film in this interview.
It is that we are all not honest with each other about our wants. We put on this mask/ character for our personal gains. And she points this out to be toxic.
The movie, as she describes it, is meant to dive deep into what desire looks like and, showcase those “horrid” things that we want to turn away from.
As she puts it, she is interested in why people don’t like certain scenes or want to look away. Why?
She believes it’s because most of us think we are better than we actually are. She has numerously stated that she is not a good person, no one is a good person. And that’s what she wants to highlight. We all have good and bad, however, don’t want to acknowledge the bad in most cases.
In this interview, she responds with “yet” when the interviewer says he has not desired to drink someone’s bath water. Because as human nature, we are capable of awful things if they get us what we want.
And we often enact of these things, more often than we would like to admit, to get us what we want.
Either that could be for acceptance, money, power, for looks or to hide something. All these things were showcased through the characters in the film. 🎥 🎞️

I wasn't ready for the shock value of this film. Just when you thought it couldn't get any more shocking, it did, and the last scene was the icing on the cake and let's just say the next time I hear "murder on the dance floor," it won't be in the same way 😂 one of the best films I've seen in a while.

This is one of the best interviews with Josh and Emerald being she was so relaxed. Honestly describing a genius artistry by likening it to a bat cave with multiple eyes. I watched the movie and discussed with my grandson who is attending last year of film school. Our family is Irish/English origins, I don't believe it was an "eat the rich" subplot, more a "love/hate" mixture were death plays the largest role. "Promising young Woman" by Fennell could open more doors on that theory as I see her key character get revenge for her lover by sacrificing herself. twisted and disturbing showing the lengths people are capable of going, This movie could definitely make one paranoid if you live in a "saltburn" existence. after they are all dead Ollie dances naked through the house, stopping to snort a line and effectively adopting the extravagant BS that he coveted from the start.

I see what she is saying, most of us will come see this movie and be like woooowww, this is shocking, I would never be like such and such character.
But this is exactly our nurture. Behind the scenes, we would NEVER want some of things we do to come to light.
    Each character show-cases that.
We put on a “character” for others. Oliver had like 7,8 characters. Felix wanted to believe he was the norm, helper to everyone. But actually, he was part of the problem along with his posh family. Minimizing the beauty around him, thinking he can affect everyone as a savior-complex - and drop them when he gets tired of them.
We are also good, however we too far stifle down how much wrong we partake in rather in private or in public.
The mom was so two-faced. The dad wanted to be grandiose, and didn’t mind putting on a face when Felix died.
So so much of how we lead our lives, involves putting on a character/face, cherry picking which of our opinions will sound nice, or get us what we want but truly, we are all the same and crappy inside.

Some comments about Saltburn: Oliver "won" in the end but is he happy? Snorting cocaine and dancing around this huge mansion on his own, gloating in his own ability to obtain Saltburn for himself and holding the dead rich family as trophies.
The psychology of Oliver does not ring true (thankfully). The obsessiveness and "love/hate" dynamic of Oliver is more true of the borderline personality and the borderline personality is usually too disorganised to pull off a coup like this.
Oliver's psychology is more that of the dark triad, in which case he would not be that interested in sex and love other than to use them as tools to manipulate others. The grave and bath scenes do not make sense in this respect.
So then we have to wonder as to the intention of the film maker, if the intention isn't to warn us of such personalities in a real way. Perhaps the film is superficial in that it is a thriller - simple entertainment. There is something superficial about the family's reactions to the deaths too, in that they have some comedy to them. The film is clever in the way it references other texts, but again this is a postmodern superficiality.
I think she articulates an aristocratic fear that the middle or working classes will "steal" their wealth. Although the middle class fellow "wins" we are by no means supposed to enjoy his victory. On the whole no one comes out of this story very well.

The part where Emerald discusses folks who “have a line that they won’t cross” and how it is “so interesting” is a bit baffling and perplexing to me. Allow me an explanation.
I started watching the movie as I loved PYW. The storytelling and subject line were incredible. With Saltburn, I paused about 30 minutes in as I’d started it too late and was nodding.
But, boy, that algorithm really works! This morning there were tons of SB RUclips recommendations awaiting me. It was from this that I learned about what commentators refer to as “unhinged behavior.” Things like the bath tub sceneS, the grave scene, the face blood scene, etc.
For me, it is so disturbing. It reminds me of “The Talented Mr. Ripley” in theme and that movie gave me nightmares for weeks. But that’s just themes on desire, deceit, decoys and death.
Other scenes are making it hard for me to go back to the movie. In this interview, Fennell says we’re not being honest because “people have transgressive thoughts all the time” … and “shouldn’t we talk about that?”
I’m sure she doesn’t mean to sound reductionist, but some people have trauma in their lives that make watching those types of scenes very difficult. It was difficult to watch PYW because of the nature of it. And, even though Cassie dies at the end, she also triumphs. And I like her as a protagonist even though she is obviously troubled. I get her trauma.
But Oliver is scary to me. These things that he does out of obsession are scary to me. Anyone who has been stalked, sexually assaulted or had someone obsessed with them to the point of violence probably don’t want to talk about transgressive thoughts because they already know far too well that people think them and act on them. And their whole world is altered because of that.
I know she wants us to root for Oliver at the end. I don’t think I’ll be able to even if I go back to watching. I don’t like predators who kill - even if those being murdered are horrible people. The way he goes about all of it is so disturbing.
Anyhow, I feel bad because so many are raving about this flick. And I keep reading articles and watching interviews hoping I can watch the rest without having nightmares or some other trauma response. But I’m not there yet.
I know EF won’t read this, but there’s the “so interesting” (as she called it) reason some just won’t go there.

    • @Sage41624
      @Sage41624 4 месяца назад

I’m glad I’m not the only one!
Oliver is not a sympathetic character and the family he kills are not bad people! They are rich and out of touch and rude but I had an easier time relating to them than Oliver!
Olli is a liar and a predator from the very start of the film.
I don’t even like the argument people make about how it’s the lower class eating the rich. Ollie was never lower class, he had a normal childhood in a loving home that would be considered upper class to the average person.
He cloaked himself in made up trauma to try to endear himself to this family and it honestly wasn’t that fun to watch!
If the murder was an intricate well thought out plan it might have been interesting but it was ultimately boring and the payoff was years down the road after multiple characters have died or just disappeared from the movie 🤷‍♀️
The most shocking scene was the grave scene because it felt like I was watching a r*pe scene. It was beyond “shameful desires” or “transgressive acts” and felt more like desecration.
I don’t know. It wasn’t a smart film in my opinion. I laughed at the absurdity but I was ultimately really disappointed in its lack of intricacies.

Saltburn is cheap knockoff of the superior brilliant 'The Talented Mr Ripley'. Same plot, same protagonist, same characters & themes. But Emerald admits in interviews when brought up how similar both movies are. She says there was no inspiration from 'The Talented Mr Ripley' even though she is a fan of the author. Total BS. Saltburn is dollarstore version, using shockvalue like bathtub, period blood scene and graveyard scene to get people talking about movie. Hiding the fact that writing and acting are subpar compared to 'The Talented Mr Ripley'. Just my opinion
