  • For my electric bicycle, I wanted to have a freewheel sprocket on the MY1018Z motor. This would allow me to pedal the bike with the motor turned off without any drag caused by the motor's shaft spinning. However the only sprocket that came with the motor is a 9 tooth fixed sprocket. This video shows how I made a shaft adapter for the freewheel sprocket out of the original 9 tooth gear that came with the motor.
Check out this video of my electric bicycle using this finished freewheel sprocket: • Homemade BB Drive Elec...

thanks for your videos on your electric bicycle building. I started mine in Feb and finished in mid June. Then a month of tweeking, then I got out my camera and took 5 five minute videos of the results. ( I gave you on screen credit for helping. )

Could you publish a video on how to remove and install the sprocket.

Unfortunately I no longer have this set up. However it will be much easier if you purchase this adapter at Staton-inc: www.staton-inc.com/store/index.php?p=product&id=1918 Then you can thread on a freewheel sprocket of your choice. This is what I currently have on my bicycle. The link to the freewheel sprocket is here: www.staton-inc.com/store/index.php?p=product&id=1130

Hi Eric , you are an inspiring person . The idea of using the gears of the bicycle is genial ...its a game changer ..congratulations ..

Thank you! I find this is the most efficient to get the maximum power out of the motor.

You should also include a 20mm x 11mm bushing to take up the extra space in the 20mm sprocket to shafts 11mm.
I don't think JB Weld would hold it very well without the added bushing.

The JB Weld did hold well, but this video is several years old. Since that video online stores have sold the parts necessary to build a much better motor sprocket:
Freewheel adapter for the MY1018Z Motor:

13 Tooth sprocket for the motor:

Thanks for your reply and links to the new and updated freewheel sprockets.
I have an extra 450 watt Currie motor I took off my eZip Trailz and put the newer style 450 watt motor with the slanted reduction gear because it has more torque at the same 470 rpm and much quieter.
I want to use the motor on my 1980 Raleigh Mixtie GS 27" 10 speed road bike and will need a LH freewheel sprocket for the rear wheel.

o my god.. i gotta say you are a genius!!!!!!!! I'm working on a project similar to yours and after watching your videos, I am starting to have BULBS of ideas. How is SAL battery holding up on your trailer video?? I know you used two lithium batteries on the new bike. I can't afford that. So I am still going to use SAL for now, but are they durable for long term?

Lead acid batteries are really durable, the only thing is that they have a much lower energy density than lithium polymer batteries so they way much more to get the same amount of power. I personally am using lipos as opposed to lead acid, just make sure you have a BMS on the lipo packs to keep them from overdischarging but lipos are worth it! you could shave off like 16 pounds on the whole rig that you are building. For something like this, every pound counts.

so 14 tooth on the motor and 55 tooth at the crank. How much do you weigh and are you happy with that gear ratio. I weigh about 225 and live where it is vey flat.

a lot of stress on that one tooth, would have also put a screw thru the side to hols it in place , anyone know how to keep a sprocket on a shaft that has only a woodkey slot, no retainer clip or threads on ,it is a smooth 11mm shaft with key slot, thinking I can drill thru the shaft and place a screw could attempt a die on it but I don't want to weaken the shaft , its a 80amp,3200 watt electric motor from alien power systems

This set up is no longer necessary since you can now find a keyed adapter to hold a sprocket. It can be found here: www.staton-inc.com/store/index.php?p=product&id=1860

Thanks for the vid! Like some previous comments, I would also like to know where you found the 9T freewheel sprocket sold in Switzerland. Thanks

I do not know about a 9T sprocket from Switzerland. My DIY part that you saw in that video has worn out. So I replaced it with a new 13 tooth sprocket. Here are the parts:
Freewheel adapter for the MY1018Z Motor:
      www.staton-inc.com/store/index.php?p=product&id=1860
13 Tooth sprocket for the motor:

Cool idea although it would’ve been much easier to have just welded something onto it instead. But I actually have questions (if you’re available to talk) about using this type of method for a larger engine for a different application. Again, Trent W Allen on Facebook or...? Not sure how else to contact you.

Feel free to send me an email at hutchmath@gmail.com
I do not have a welder at home and I have never welded anything.
