We have been doing this since the 1980’s. Heard about it and hung them around our patio of our house. No more flies ruining the bbq dinner. We were full time campers and hang these bags on our awning. It has never failed repelling flies no matter what part of the country we are in. Amazing!!
Will this still work if the porch is dark? I don't get lots of sunlight in my porch😢 also my problem is the neighbors disgusting dog and trash bins. They never keep clean no matter how many times we have asked politely. Unfortunately, now our porch is infested with flies.
I put one up and my neighbor asked what it was. I told him it was an elephant repellent. He asked how is that going to repel elephants? I said, I don't know but you don't see any elephants around here do you? :)
It does work. I found out about this from an old black lady in Coleman Florida who owned a BBQ shack. She had them all over. It was a eat outside place. Never saw a fly. Not even in 100 degree heat. I asked her why all the bags of water ? She told me it keeps the flies away. I was like how ?! She said she did not know but her mother taught her this many years ago. It was really like being on another planet. But again never saw a fly. With food everywhere. No joke.
Works WONDERFULLY!!! I hung mine from my front porch light fixture & it STOPPED my problem!!! I only had the problem with flies when we had a storm coming through & they all wanted to hide inside where they'd be safe!!! With this trick, they decided they were safer outside!!! THANKS!!!
Try cleaning the pennies with vinegar to make them really shiny because some pennies are very oxidized and dull in color. Also use pre 1981 pennies as they are solid copper, not plated. Otherwise you might notice a grayish dust on the bottom of the bag as the plated pennies dissolve from the inside out over time. Hope that helps.
I use pint mason jars. Screw or nail the lid to ceiling at the corners of the porch, fill jars with water and Penny's, screw the lid. Not as weird as the bags but works the same.

I will try this tomorrow. I found a way to keep bees and wasps away too. Put plastic bags in a brown paper bag but make sure the bag looks like it's blown up or puffed out and hang it up on the porch. I think it looks like a hornets nest to keep them away. Thank you for this video.

In that case it might have nothing to do with the pennies and looking like eyes. The light hitting the water is going to be magnified so maybe its just that, seeing as though flies have crazy excellent vision and don't just see one image like we do, they see multiple images as though they have multiple eyes. The magnified light might be too intense for their vision and be blinding. And the water may even be splitting the wavelengths of the light when it refracts in certain ways that also mess with their vision. For how effective this method seems to be, it would make more scientific sense that its something to do with the light through the water, and how their eyes and vision work.

boo boo yes I can read. I use what’s called voice over on my iPhone. It’s a talking device. Anyway, I don’t like how they buzz and sound like bees. In fact, I’m going to visit back south in North Carolina next year. I shared this with a friend of mine who lives there. And my aunt lives in men Teaka California and they get a combination of big, medium, and small baby flies in the house if someone comes in and out. They live near the cows.

Thanks for taking time to share this. I live in Columbus, Geogia, housefly capital of the Western Hemisphere, and I cannot wait to try this. I'm a born and bred Southern boy, yet I did not know about this trick. Thanks again!
I am in the UK and have never heard of this before....but I am very impressed, (and trusting,) so I am going to hang up some bags. If my neighbours fall about laughing, and prove to me how gullible I am, you are not far enough away for me not to find you........;-)

YUP....I hope people pay attention....we have done this for years...... it works....and we live on the other side of the fence from the pasture so we know about flies
Hi Southerner! This is a Native Californian writing you from an area close to the ocean and less than one "klick" from a dairy. I'm going to try your idea. My wife said your idea is certainly original to us. Thanks for the tip. Wishing you and your family a great summer! Regards, Ralph O. Ya think that sounds crazy,my friend glued 2 CD togethers shiny side out,put a small hole through both, then threaded a 10lb fishing line a foot long to hang the CDs or Dvds, then she glued 3 shiny pennies to each side speraiting then a inch apart, then hung them up on her porch close to every door,so when the wind blows and any light reflected off then, now I haven't tried it yet,but I seen hers hanging, but forgot to look for flies..I may try making one,I do know some hang then in their fruit trees, not with pennies though.just wanted to share this...
I did make 2 sets and what a great day to try them out one by front door the other by the sliding doors, brings its gloomy and raining and so far none on front porch except for wasps there are a few flies at sliding doors but not hanging on the screen, you know this may just work, hope so any way.
This works for pigeons as well. Had a pigeon problem and heard they don't like shiny things or moving things. Had a couple scratched dvds, so I strung them together and hung them, almost like a ghetto windchime. They stopped using my balcony as a toilet.
Yes this actually works, we hang a clear bag of water in our carport above the recycle bins, but without the coin. My brother came back with this idea from Mexico. The family he stayed with used to do that when they bbqd or would hang several bags of water under a tarpaulin when they had outside gatherings. We thought he was joking about it. But yes this works.
Could it be that the attracting power of the food was stronger than the repellent power of the bag? I think the fellow in the video mentioned setting food sources far away from your house as well.
I'll try it, but I'm worried about your light fixture coming loose. Isn't there a way to maybe screw a hook into the ceiling from which you could suspend the ziploc? I'm staying with my daughter & her husband whose baby I keep during the week. We've had a problem with these huge horse flies coming inside the house. (I think it's the result of the large mulberry trees overhanging the front of the house.) One of those suckers (a fly not a mulberry) got inside my bedroom and nearly drove me bonkers a few nights ago, so I'm very happy to have discovered this video. Thank you for taking your precious time to share with others.
Dear Homesteading Off The Grid, Let them laugh and make jokes all they want, IT WORKS!!! My wife and I own a small vegetable farm here on the edge of Phoenix, Arizona and, like you, we also keep chickens, lots of chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys. We run a Farm Stand where we sell our eggs and what we grow. Some years the fly's are worse than others but they are always around. About 10 years ago my wife saw this idea and although we both laughed at the thought, she said 'we've got nothing to loose but our fly problem'. We used 5 pennies and sandwich bags, hanging them over the garage doors we open around our Vegetable Stand. Nothing worse than trying to sell vegetables with fly's all over the place. Our fly problem dwindled down to almost no fly's at all. It worked so well we also hung some over the front porch of our home, an area we like to sit at the end of the day. Even in this open area the fly's rarely bother us. The story my wife read was that fly's think the bags are Wasp Nests which are predators to fly's. Hardly a week goes by that a customer asks about the bags hanging above the doors. Theresa still enjoys telling the story. Sometimes the customer will laugh and then head back outside where the fly's are everywhere. Enjoyed your video and like I said, Let them Laugh. IT WORKS!!! Bob and Theresa Berglund Grandma's Farm
Usually I just glanced at the coment and move on but these comments had me rolling lol. I live in the Caribbean we live with insects and chemicalize them bamm and darts under cover.😂
I live in Az. I asked at a restaurant in Tombstone why they had a plastic bag of water at the door. To keep flies away. I didn't see any while we had lunch. I had one on my patio for 16 years, no pennies, no sun. And it worked. Hubby took it down to paint, won't put it back up. We now have flies.
Glad I came across this video. Last August I decided to buy a 30-foot RV camper to live in it. So I moved it on a friend's 5-acre property that happens to be next door neighbors with somebody that owns a couple horses and trains them for shows. Nonetheless last summer I had a fly issue constantly in my RV and it's very annoying. This year same problem and now I think I have to try this because I can't stand being in a small 450 sq ft RV and flies buzzing around me 24/7. Because of the horses, the flies are a major problem.
My old grandpa passed down his fly solution: flys in the kitchen, put a bucket of cow manure in the living room, then mother-in-law goes home, too. Double win.
Great video - thank you ... my Dad used to ask “Do you know how to keep flies out of the kitchen?” “No” I’d reply ... “Put a bucket of dung in the living room!” And he’d laugh and laugh!!
I had a moth problem, they were all over the place. A friend told me to get moth balls. Found out after throwing them all day long, I did not hit one damn moth and i had to clean it up...
First time seeing you guys. I can't stop watching. Thank you for your service. I have a hint for you. Save your hair from your haircuts. Spread in your garden. The deer think you are there and will stay away.. You could use dirty sox or old shoes. Love your family. Martha from Georgia. My kids are in Virginia.
If its the sparkly reflections that keep away the bugs, why not just use a mirror or disco bally reflecting wind chimes or something and skip the water in a bag part?
I'VE DONE THAT FOR YEARS EXCEPT I'VE NEVER HEARD ABOUT THE PENNY THING. WHAT WE DO IS TAKE TWO ZIPLOC SANDWICH BAGS AND PUT THE WATER IN THEM AND HANG THEM OVER THE DOOR USING FOUR TACKS FOR EACH BAG. THE REASON I WAS TOLD THIS WORKS IS THE FLIES THINK IT'S A WATERFALL OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT AND THEY WON'T FLY UNDER FALLING WATER. MAYBE BOTH THEORIES ARE CORRECT.

@@lilliambloomfield2501 I’m not sure understand your question, so: _Irish Spring_ is a brand of hand/bath soap which comes in the form of a bar (cake); a "net bag" is a pouch of loose woven mesh; "smell,’ in this context, refers the odor or fragrance of this particular brand of soap. Does this answer your question, or was it something else which puzzled you?
had teenage neighbors who spent hours watching me as I worked in my gardens. The previous owners had erected an 8 ft metal fence for some privacy, but only between the teenagers' property and mine, so the teens would hide behind metal fence and peer around the corner. I planted cleome (old fashioned kind) in the corner. Cleome flowers here all summer and early fall, and they smell like farts. Kids complained to parents and their parents laughed, told them maybe they should stop spying on me.

@@lisaelam2375 I also laughed right away!
Good one😜
You funny
😂
Thanks for taking time to share this. I live in Columbus, Geogia, housefly capital of the Western Hemisphere, and I cannot wait to try this. I'm a born and bred Southern boy, yet I did not know about this trick. Thanks again!
Did u try it
I am in the UK and have never heard of this before....but I am very impressed, (and trusting,) so I am going to hang up some bags. If my neighbours fall about laughing, and prove to me how gullible I am, you are not far enough away for me not to find you........;-)
Very informative video ! I remember my grandmother used to do that when I was a kid and I thought that she was nuts ! She wasn't from the South , she was from East Prussia ! Thanks !
So simple, I'm will try this, I'm so tierd of fly's. Thank you so much for sharing with us.
YUP....I hope people pay attention....we have done this for years...... it works....and we live on the other side of the fence from the pasture so we know about flies
thanks for showing the pennies near the beginning. I wasn't sure what they looked like!
Hi Southerner! This is a Native Californian writing you from an area close to the ocean and less than one "klick" from a dairy. I'm going to try your idea. My wife said your idea is certainly original to us.
Thanks for the tip.
Wishing you and your family a great summer!

Totally amazing !!!!! It worked for me too . Thank you for sharing that with us brother.
Omg i gotta try it!! Their driving me nuts!!!
my grandmother used to do this! Next spring, I am going to do this.
Thank you, Pam. Hope it works for you, too, and you and that darling baby get a reprieve from those nasty horse flies.
Also cabbage juice helps babys sleep and digestion and you will remember your dreams so just steam or boil some cabbge😉
They can also be hung from door knobs.
The comments truly qualify as ROTFLMAO. I pulled a muscle in my gut and tears are streaming down my face. RUclips community is the best!

Btw rotflmao means "rollin on the floor laughing my ass off" to those that are wondering
I'm from the South, but I've never heard of it. Thanks for the tip, gonna try it!!

IT WORKS!!!

These comments are awesome, I love it. I have seen this trick here in Colorado, may just have to try it.
Jan Ambrose one fly for 16 years??! Lmao!
PHanomaly dinghy he was referring to the water bag!!
@@pattiellis1075 lol, i know, i know, but i like how he took that fly down & painted it too 🤣
@@PHanomaly That post was just right for your sense of humor, twice zapped. Thanks for the laughs.
Put hubby in a bag and hang his sorry arse up!!!!!!
It drives the flys eyes crazy! It does work.
Thank you so much. I hate flies. And lately I have learned how nasty they are.Now I know how to get rid of them.Thank you again.
Sooo did it work?
@kurtsam5972 kind of. I definitely got less flies but the soapy water with honey and vinegar put into a container with holes works better
My old grandpa passed down his fly solution: flys in the kitchen, put a bucket of cow manure in the living room, then mother-in-law goes home, too. Double win.
OMG, I'm still laughing! Thank you!
Thank you, I needed a good laugh!
Hahahahaha
Lol😂
You know that sounds like what Al Bundy would do and say... LOL
My flies are decor lovers, this isn't pleasing to the eye, lol, but if it keeps those little bastards away, I'm in
Great video - thank you ... my Dad used to ask “Do you know how to keep flies out of the kitchen?” “No” I’d reply ... “Put a bucket of dung in the living room!” And he’d laugh and laugh!!
Thanks for your service. Can't wait to try this in summer in Buffalo, NY.
I just shared this video with my neighborhood Facebook group because they think. I'm crazy for suggesting using this method. Thanks Kevin!
Thanks for sharing!!
we do this trick in the nort of spain / galicia, and yes it works --thumbs up

I had a moth problem, they were all over the place. A friend told me to get moth balls. Found out after throwing them all day long, I did not hit one damn moth and i had to clean it up...
Tapps47 lol😂😂😂😂😫u fuccing idiot lol made my day
lol
Tapps47 😂😂😂😂😂
I had a real hard time finding moth balls until I uncrossed his tiny little legs.
Practice more after you've had a couple of beers
First time seeing you guys. I can't stop watching. Thank you for your service. I have a hint for you. Save your hair from your haircuts. Spread in your garden. The deer think you are there and will stay away.. You could use dirty sox or old shoes. Love your family. Martha from Georgia. My kids are in Virginia.
Martha Rice does this work for moles, racoons, ground hogs and squirrels?
Will that work for neighbors who you really can't stand being around?
But you'll get wet walking in the house and also, who wants to keep filling up ziplock bags with water?
will this keep my mother in law away....
hee hee hee never thought of that, gr8t idea...
neem oil might work for that
you could try garlic that will keep vampires away!! ahahaa
whitedove886 n
definitely a vampire, lol
Thank you for the tip! Definitely gonna try this. God Bless you and your family
It really works I'm still in shock, thank you
Kind greetings from( 3 rd country) other side of this beautiful planet. I am a handy man and at day time I work in front of my house. Today I copied and hanged near my work place and No Flies! I Mean WALA! Want to say thank you.
Does the sunlight need to shine directly in the pennies for this to work. Or can you have indirectlight / shade ?
Well Robin I have same question but since you haven't got an answer in two years I won't hold my breath.😉
Put a bar of Irish spring original smell in a net bag.
And hang
The flies hate the smell
What is that, if I may ask and hopefully get an answers
@@lilliambloomfield2501 I’m not sure understand your question, so: _Irish Spring_ is a brand of hand/bath soap which comes in the form of a bar (cake); a "net bag" is a pouch of loose woven mesh; "smell,’ in this context, refers the odor or fragrance of this particular brand of soap.
Does this answer your question, or was it something else which puzzled you?
@@lilliambloomfield2501
Its a bar of soap used to wash your body. I got this for my sons because after playing outside, they were especially stinky.
I hate the smell of it too lol
@@charliem.7492 it's the flies.
They are from hell.
Nothing works anymore!
Even flyswatters.
had teenage neighbors who spent hours watching me as I worked in my gardens.
I grew up in Waynesboro VA! I just stumbled upon your channel. Looking forward to watching more! I am in Kansas now and we have big foot sightings here! Be blessed, Sherry
Very cool, thanks for sharing.
I'm going to try this because it's been so lovely and hot in the UK recently. But I hate the flies 😡😡Thanks for sharing this tip.
To keep flys out of your house simply put bar of Irish spring soap outside by your door...no more flys in house!!
I just came across your channel and watched this and noticed that you kept mentioning Arkansas I am in Arkansas I had to hit your red support button and I also shared this video on Twitter
Do need sunshine for this to work. I live in ireland not much sunshine there.
Wow what a cool idea! I’m from the south born and raised and have never heard of this!!! Simple and it works!
Whats the point of using 4 pennies if they're all clumped together? Dont you have to spread them out?
I tried this in our fishing boat and it works!
This is great. Do the pennies have to be shiny? Thanks for the video.
Thank you I will try this, my adult grandsons and I been killing flies all day for 4 days now I have checked everywhere in my house, around my house to see what can be causing these flies.
I saw this at my moms house and thought she was nuts. Now that it’s been explained I am going to give it a shot.
Works for bees too. I have done this for a couple years and it truly helps 😊
Anything to keep the noseem and mite pestilence down?
