- Onyx Boox Palma in white, absolutely best e-ink device in my opinion. I decided to share my opinions after using it regularly, and I absolutely think at this point there is no competition on this form factor. I bought this device with my own money, and opinions are my own. If you have any questions, please ask. Thank you for watching.
This device is just so appealing! Thanks for sharing your experience with it. I wanted to see a white Palma so desperately.
Me too, but none showed it in white, so I just bought it.
I remember hearing that when the iPhone dropped.. Or rather touch screens/smartphone. It ruined everything. I am glad people are waking up to the effects of smartphone addiction, AND fun is coming back to cell phones. I don't know how old you are, but back in 2000-2006 it was fun to have different types of cell phone. Then the fun went away with the touch screen smart phones.
WAIT, is this thing NOT a cell phone????Could have fooled me! Never mind my phone comment then. I am just watching it with no volume.
I'm getting mine delivered today from Amazon and I'm so excited! They didn't have white available which made me a little sad but I think I'll like the black okay. Just wanted to say though that your video is the best I've seen. I love that you focus on the many positives of this device. And I didn't even know about the multiple voice choices for audible, thank you! :)
Thank you, it’s my favorite device, color is just on the outside, besides that it does everything the same. Enjoy it :)
This is one of the most authentic review I have ever seen. 😂😂😂
Thank you, inspired me to record continuation video.
Finally a white Palma review on RUclips! Thank you so much for the video!
I am shocked that there were none because I think white Palma is the one to buy.
I wish it had a faster refresh rate, but I get it, it is a lot faster from previous devices. Great video!
I think this is fastest there is comparing to similar devices.
Thanks to you, I just ordered the White one for myself 😁 I was going back and forth between the black and white but I decided on the white one. It’s too pretty i can’t ignore it lol. Thanks for the graeat review ❤
Oh my, best e-ink device ever! Need to tweak a lot of settings for some apps to make them look good. But overall, what a great and snappy device!
Best part about Android is tweaking to fit your needs.
@@MaxNM do you know if these Android OS' are ok for banking apps? AFAIK most banking apps won't work on non-official or weird Android ROMs. THanks!
I love that you have the white. I always get mostly black devices, but recently i love white design in my world. thanks for that passionate look of this device.
Im totally agree
This is a MUST HAVE device - extremely handy device used every day - you must get it - white color is best !!
Battery for this should also last you weeks just like a kindle. Highest battery drain is having Wifi/BLE active as it will heavily drain your battery as it searches in the background for networks and devices. If you are on the go I would recommend switching those of and of course for reading choose the lowest refresh rate. Good thing is the Palma will actually store the refresh setting for each app individually so can can still use your news app in a good refresh rate while it will switch to low refresh for static book pages. Anyway you will get a extremely long battery live with those (especially the wifi) tipps
I find the battery life pretty impressive. Especially the standby battery usage is super low.
Yes, it's pretty good battery, I don't find myself needing to charge often
Thanks for the video. Mine should arrive tomorrow. I also went with the white for the exact same reason as you.
It’s a very nice device, and definitely looks better in white.
I got black , however I should have bought white version.
@@tahirahmed33 I think looks better than the black version.
Great review, and happy for your enthusiasm about the Palma. You do a good sales job for it.
Go to 4:10 to actually see the device turned on
This looks amazing. I hope it goes on sale for Black Friday/Cyber Monday. 👀
As far as my memory recollection I don’t remember Boox offering deals in Black Friday, but you never know.
Honestly I’ve seen people with regular smartphones that have a worse refresh rate than this phone lol the only downside imo is that it’s black and white
Aye but imagine it's battery life
There is a downside of color e-ink display, it won’t be a plus in my opinion and actually the opposite. Right now Palma has nice white background and crisp texts, adding color to it will make white background darker and text won’t be as crisp. Plus the battery will take a hit.
AMOLED screens don't say the same. 😂🎉
i think its good because it reduces the addictiveness pocket devices often come with
i think its good because it reduces the addictiveness pocket devices often come with
Excellent video! Just one small correction - you compared the startup times incorrectly, because the Leaf 2 was fully powered off, not just asleep. However, that doesn’t mean the Leaf 2 isn’t horrendously slow, because it is!
I hear you, that’s why I mentioned in a video that even when not using it for some time that it still starts fast. Comparing both from turned of Palma is still fast.
Boox Palma is a design that I have been looking for however, I hope that it can be an actual phone w/ sime plus the E-ink refresh rate will develop onto the faster side. Hope there'll be more affordable e-ink phones and e-readers w/ better tech in the market. colored or black and white.
Adding sim functionality will make it more pricey as well as exposure to more bugs, which means it will require more up to date Android OS since older OS lacks proper security support when Android decides to drop it.
@MaxNM those are possible, but the e-ink tech is still behind times. The boox palma is unreasonably expensive, I could've bought a midrange phone near its price range. They are a few market players so they can demand such prices.
Nice review. Thanks Max
It looks good for a cell phone sized device..
The price point is a bit high for the size..
I definitely will keep an eye out.
What do the store selections look like for boox?
I own a nook glow light 4 e which was a Christmas gift.
It's a nice e reader and my first.
Eventually I know I'll want to upgrade once I figure out what I want in an e reader.
Thank you for this video was waiting to see an indepth video of this device I like the color you chose too not thinking about it no more if I should or should not get it but after this video am definitely getting mine asap..
One thing about Palma I don’t like is I’m a tech guy and I always get new gadgets, but Palma will be tough to beat with what it offers. Like I just received Boox Tab Mini C and I think Palma is so much better. Not sure what they can do to it to make it even better as it is already so good.
Just want every tech thing in my life be e-ink, that's so good
Just ordered one, I agree the white is so much better if you're reading primarily white pages. The price is amazing too for what you get.
I agree, just one big negative is that it won’t see any Android upgrades based on Boox history.
This is useful, thank you! Any idea if I can do a google meet audio call on this over wifi? totally buying one if so!
I don’t see why not, it does have a microphone and a speaker. It’s just another Android device with e-ink display. I can see I am able to download it from play store.
I subscribed because of this video ❤
Thank you so much for this! It help so much! I believe i was one of the people asking about reading pdfs on it on a Reddit post on a white palma the other day, most likely yours. Im almost sure ill pick this up. Now ive really narrowed it down to this or hisense touch. Leaning towards this, the only thing im not thrilled on is price.
It is pricey, but you do get a lot for that price, and what I mean is no headache to deal with when compared to other devices, it works so well, which is so refreshing to see. Based on usability it is obvious that Onyx put some work into it unlike so many others that feel like they were teased too soon as the product feels half baked. I would have loved to see price at $200, and I think it would sold much more for that price, but I think Onyx is selling enough for that price too.
Is there a good matte screen protector for this device?
Amazing. I'm getting one, also in white.
Very cool
Great video, thanks for the review! One question, does it run Spotify comfortably? Considering buying one to migrate from iphone leaving it just as “phone” device, and palm to reed and listen to music without interruption from social media
I did not test Spotify, but I did test RUclips music and that was fine.
It'd be nice if you had a link in the description for purchase.
I bought mine from ebay.
If they ever do a color version of this device and don't remove the micro SD card I'll buy it no questions asked.
Won’t be the same experience.
This is so cool. Such a shame that it's not an actual phone... would have been the go-to smartphone for backpacking!
Good Review man
Thank you 😊
Can you do a video review on the Xiaomi Ink Palm 5?
Isn't it the same device?
@@markn8535 no. It’s made by BOOX
I buy xiaomi tab 6 is the best full color good battery life reading books and run all Android apps and games I recommend to buy it refresh rate 144 HZ its amazing in addition to it has a smart pen to write my notes with sounds videos and pictures.
That’s an LCD display, which is not best for reading, mind as well than buy tcl nxtpaper 11/12, it has matte layer and transforms into reading tablet, but it still an LCD. Before buying Boox I had an LCD Android tablet with matte display, it’s not good for long reading and overall very uncomfortable for eyes.
Great review! Odd Q for you: I would love to pair my nice mechanical keyboard to this and use it as a simple word processor. I did try the with an Onyx Box 4 and the typing lag was so bad as to be too frustrating. Have you tried out a keyboard by chance?
I have not, but it is faster than Tab Mini C which is pretty much smaller version of Tab Ultra C that uses keyboard, so I assume experience will be a lot better than Boox 4.
It’ll be tough to do editing and copy pasting etc.
I wish I could make calls with this. I think I'd make it into my daily driver in a snap!
I have an Hisense a9, it's a mobile phone too. This boox looks like a pure copy.
It’s not, there are videos on RUclips comparing both, it was said that Hisense has a better build and speakers are much better, but everything else Boox is the leading device.
@@MaxNM ok interesting thanks
Nice video!
Just one question. Does a black line appears at the very very top of your screen from edge to edge every time you turn on your Palma?
On mine it appears just when I turn it on. It looks straight, and does appear to be a flaw but I'm not sure.
I don’t have that issue.
I wonder how long the battery life is while in airplane/low power mode and just for ereading. My SD capable ereaders are all too old and slow to really handle a massive library of books and don't handle 1TB+ SD cards. This will be for SHTF scenario, and me and my family could have books, guides, field manuals, etc.
Haven’t tried it, but my guess is weeks. Of course also depends on how long of a usage daily.
Wish it was widely available in my country
When I bought it was same story, announced but sold out in most places, so I bought mine from eBay.
Does this have a camera? How does that work with the e ink screen?
It does have one, mostly used for scanning documents, as camera is pretty basic. While it looks black and white on that display, actually camera is in color, which you can see when viewing images on other devices. I never use it, as I generally use my iPhone for that purpose.
Thanks for the video.
Can this device do text-to-speech in the kindle or reader app?
It can in native app, as well as Google one. Not kindle from my last test.
Hey, I've got a fairly unusual question. I use my ereaders for language learning and as such tend to look up a lot of words. One thing I dislike about my kindle is how slow some dictionaries load, so I was wondering how fast are dictionary lookups on this device?
It’s actually pretty good, remember this device has GPU built into it, so it is pretty snappy, meaning it’s the fastest e-ink device I used so far.
I've met reviews about issues with backlight bleeding around the screen bevel in a dark mode while rrading at night
Have you noticed anything like that?
Thanks!
Yes, it is there in first gen and second gen of palma.
Feels too expensive to me, but probably because I'd only use it as an ebook reader
Does the lag to open apps etc. annoy you? I like this device but I am worried that it might be very uncomfortable to use after a few hours or days, because of the few seconds it takes for things to show up.
Not really especially when compared to other devices.
Is there the Boox Notes app in Palma? I would love to be able to type quick notes on Palma and then continue working on it on my TUC.
No, but you can download third party notes app from play store and use it on TUC.
Hi, do you have the Palma still? How has it been working? I've been reading of folks having issues with it.
I sure do still have it, and mine works same as it did when I first bought it.
Great video. I have a few specific questions about how the device works with the kindle app. Does the text to speech function work within the kindle app and will it read in any of the voices? Also are there any limitations surrounding the use of kindle unlimited? I would think not. I use kindle unlimited on the iphone app and it works so i would think that will work since it's from the play store. Thanks!
Voice function works only natively in neoreader app, I did not see that function in kindle app. Kindle app and kindle unlimited should behave the same as any other device.
Got mine for about 2 weeks now and I never go back to my Leaf 2.
Leaf 2 is great for reading but that's about it, super slow, and speakers are way too low.
Does this e-ink device have a night light of some sort to read in the dark?
It has lighting of display you can adjust.
The Speech Central app uses the same voices and it's a one time payment or free if you're blind.
I just learned that most applications on Google can use same voices, they are not as organized, but I did see same voices on Google own app for reading, as well as on Readera app, and it’s free
Can you make it do White text on Black background? Thanks :)
No
Where's the best place to buy this?
Probably online, you can buy from Boox. I bought it from eBay.
I have a kindle paperwhite and it's awesome. What can this do that someone would want to do on it?
Example: I have a phone (color 120hz refresh) for reddit and web browsing etc.
Well at least it matches the 300ppi
Woah, it's $300?
This device allows a lot more than kindle, for example you are free to use whatever reader app you wish, also opening up books in those apps is much easier. You can also use your favorite news and magazines app. It is capable of doing a lot without causing much of strain on your eyes.
Yes, and they sell out often.
@@MaxNM Interesting, thanks for taking the time to tell me!
Is this the best performance e-ink devices have to offer? Not gonna lie I'd rather buy the newspaper.
Depends on your needs, I think for portability and performance it is the best. You can always continue buying newspapers, but it’s always a good idea to consider this planet and where the paper comes from for newspapers. I personally love my Palma.
hi! i was wondering, is android 11 a problem since it’s outdated now? i really want the palma but im worried!
It depends what your plans are with this device. For basic things, then I don’t think so, but I personally would not ass any of my personal financial accounts on it.
have you tried the new TCL one? its cheaper and looks to be best of both worlds
TCL NXTpaper 11?
yes sir@@MaxNM
@@FOXeye95 I already have some videos on it, and sorry to say but it sucks. I’m working on a full review.
Saving and hurting the eyes at the same time 😅
How is the Telegram support? Simiar scroll speeds to the news/reddit app?
Telegram functions well, as long as you set appropriate refresh rate, scrolling speeds are same.
if I want to use for whatsapp, messenger and google message. What's the battery life I can expect from it??
Better than a cell phone
Can you play simple games like chess or solitaire?
Absolutely
Would you recommend this or the boox page?
Palma hands down
Some advice. Let us know what the device is early. I was watching the video and was almost 3 minutes in and still didn't even know what the thing was. Is it a phone? Is it a Kindle? Is it an art tablet? I stopped watching because I didn't even know what the device was supposed to be that you were talking about. Don't assume that your viewers automatically know what the device is you are reviewing. I got tired of waiting for you to tell me what it does and stopped watching.
Understood, there is some information in description saying that it is an e-ink device, but I get it. Thank you
@@MaxNM I understand, and info in the description is great. However, for people like me that watch RUclips on our smart TVs, we don't see a description.
what's the name of the app for pdf you used in the video please?
NeoReader? It already comes installed on palma device.
Can you install signal on this? For me it would be fine if it was considered a “phone”.
I’m using telegram on it, so I don’t see why not.
excuse me . what is the model of the bigger one? Leaf 2?!
Yes Leaf 2 in white.
is the Speech Synthesys function online only? Or is it something you can do without the internet? :O
You don’t need internet to use voices, just pick the one you want and that’s it. Obviously if you need additional voices that require to be downloaded, then for that process you need internet, otherwise internet is not a requirement in order to use narrator for reading material.
I'm hoping I will use it more often than my Kobo, because I can fit the Palma in my pocket
It is a joy to use, so smooth, feels like generations ahead of current e-reader devices.
Honey, every device has a GPU. What Boox meant is they added a new pixel refresh algorithm that is better than traditional e-link display unit that doesn't.
Good to know, thank you 😊
would you recommend screen protector?
i had the leaf 2 and hated it, it turned me off from boox for a looong time
I don’t, unless you’re very careless with a device. I don’t have any scratches, but then again I have a sleeve for it.
@@MaxNM so sleeve and being super careful over just a case and a screen protector??
@@Skit7y I’m really not careful with it, I do have a sleeve, but most of the time I just throw it in my pocket or a bag.
ykw fair enough
It is slow?why should it be fast? Are you everytime in a extreme hurry?
I'm four minutes into this video and still have no idea what this thing is. Maybe start with "This is the _____ it's a ______. for ______" Just a suggestion. Whatever it is it's sexy looking.
It’s an e-ink Android device, has no sim, so no calls. Great device for reading.
Can't watch videos on it?
Videos do play on it, but not something I would recommend as quality is far off from non e-ink device.
@@MaxNM aww that sucks. Battery life is very important to me. Samsung s23 battery kinda sucks. I might sacrifice color and quality for a less addictive, but functional great batter phone. But this ain't it
Can it rotate the screen ?
Which microsd should I get ?
Lately I’ve been using Samsung brand
holy crap that’s expensive for that tiny thing
It’s worth its cost, but I wouldn’t complain if it was cheaper.
price?
I thiught the point of e readers was to not have diatractions like access to the ingernet on that scale?
They all have access to internet, this is a device with e-ink display, a bit different from just an e-reader.
@@MaxNM so it's a tablet basically? But that has the looks and display of an e reader?
@@lucassames2517 basically yes, tablet functionality in a size of a phone with an e-ink display. That’s important for people that use different books apps, or reading news and their social media.
This on the back of an Xperia 21:9 aspect ratio. Use as cover when using o/LED, not unlike a book cover.
Who cares about colour? Flip when required.
LEAF 2 when you're going for a long comfortable read. Use hotspot of PALMA.
Idiot, slow down. (The tourist).
Keep leaf and palma connected through Palma hotspot and use connection for render-/processing power.
Where can I buy it?
Online
Isn't that just a book reader app with a bunch of special features (os) in a touchscreen device or there's more to it?
Does it work with the Libby and hoopla apps?
I haven't tried those, but on Reddit some people mentioned that they have tried Libby and it worked fine.
5:58 ofc it has a gpu it doent have a DEDICATED GPU but if it outputs graphics it has a gpu!
You are unaware that commonly speaking about a GPU is speaking about a separate dedicated GPU?
What no one does that 😂😂😂what do you even Mean you would say : my phone doent have a gpu or you would say my play station don't have gpu???
I dont get the point of a E ink android tablet... And def dont get the point of complaining about the refresh rate on a E ink display, android refreshes at 60Hz. The display just isn't a good fit for android. Id bypass any E ink android tablet. and stick to something like a Supernote or a kindle Scribe... Good for taking Notes and reading books. Have a Actual android tablet for media n w.e E ink for taking notes and reading books. The light phone also made good use of the display. The android combo is atrocious though I have to be honest.
but you can't use 4g connectivity....
No, I also said it in my video.
does it work for arabic text?
I can’t read Arabic, but I was in Egypt last September, so when scrolling through language setting it looks like the text I saw in Egypt, so my guess is that it does.
TCL 40 Nextpaper
Absolutely not after trying out TCL Nextpaper tablet
Sitck a SIM to this and I will gladly be nº1 customer!
It depends, not sure it needs that extra monthly cost.
it's giving ... black mirror
"It's snappy"... clicks twice cause first time it didn't register
Remember that most of the time reviews are done behind the camera, so typing and clicking is not always precise, but Palma is snappy compared to rest of e-readers alike.
Quick video🤦🏻
:) for me that was.
@@MaxNM hahaha great video, though
@@DavidSanchez-eh1sy Thank you 🙏
Make it into a phone!!!!!
You definitely went to Egypt to get your ass buffed didn't you 😅😅
What do you mean? I don’t get it.
E-Ink makes no sense on android. That looks terrible and laggy. TCL NXTPaper is much better.
The NXTPaper is a tablet and like 3 times the size of this. I think the purposes / niche is different
Plus it’s not even e ink but lcd with a matte screen
TCL also make a NXT paper phone. It is not a normal LCD, it has a layer over the display that completely removes all glare and blue light, makes it look and behave like a colour e-ink display without the refresh lag. @@wikim00
