- HUGE SHOUTOUT TO "THAT BOY AQUA" for the video title idea! He made a fantastic essay on Arkham Asylum, and I did a similar take on it since HoB's atmosphere reminds me of it lol. Subscribe to him!

In this video I dissect my favorite mixtape of all time.
The Weeknd has become one of the most prevalent musicians in the entire world, evolving from a druggy R&B crooner to a worldwide pop star. Abel Tesfaye kickstarted his career with a mysterious persona, dark musical world, and raw aesthetic that created a wave in music we are still feeling vibrations from. I've always connected with the pure misery and coldness that made up House of Balloons, despite Abel singing about having everything anyone could ever want secularly. Let's talk about the deep, dark character portrayal he gives us in House of Balloons and what it means for his career and the music industry at large...
My top 3 from this incredible mixtape: The Party & The After Party, Loft Music, The Knowing
Verdict: Greatest R&B project ever [well, 1/3 of it... ;)]

I am a Christian and student and I made this channel when I was in high school. I started this channel because I love talking about music (specifically hip hop) and given that the genre seems to be going downhill, I want to be part of the community that preserves the expectation of great music and dissecting what makes a beautiful rap record. Dealing with a lack of friends to discuss these matters with, I hoped to start my own community that loves music just as I do, as well as to provide a unique perspective as a follower of Christ that also appreciates this community. I appreciate everyone who watches and I am truly happy to see anybody comment their thoughts on a project I talk about.
Put "KING OF R&B" as your comment if you read the description!
As always, thank you very much for watching and taking time out of your day to discuss music with me, God bless. Isaiah 55:8-12
Trilogy feels like the end of a xtc night. Everybody is done dancing , it is 5 am and everybody is just kind of sitting around, to tired to do anything but the drugs are still pumping so you know you can’t sleep. The instrumentals perfectly match that vibe. It is still amazing to me that kiss land feels like the except opposite, it feels grand, free and big. Amazing how he was able to do these projects back to back.
Dude, you’re a genius. The way you make connections and dissect the music is just insane
Wow, this is such a nice comment! It really made my day. Thanks for your kind words
@JacksonsMusicPalate, amidst the cacophony of voices that hail genius, you and I tread a different path. In the vast sea of admirers, I seek a confluence of thoughts, not as a fan, but as a kindred spirit. From the archipelago of the Philippines to the bustling streets of Toronto, my journey is a testament to the unspoken. Let the world perceive our dialogue as futile; we know better. In you, I see a reflection, an understanding that transcends the superficial. May our exchange unveil layers unseen, resonating with a truth only few dare to seek.
@@JT.Visionsbro u not fooling nobody with your big words 😄
The title track's sample absolutely convinces me that not only is the narrator unhappy, but no one is. The Happy House sounds borderline like a mental institution or a crazy house; people taking drugs, destruction of livelihood, manipulation... the repeating of the sample gives me a picture of a nightmarish place. Heck, I think a balloon is the perfect metaphor for the album: it inflates and bounces around as though it were happy, but it deflates or pops later on. There's pleasure and drugs now, but there will only be trouble later.
The Morning was the song that got me to listen to HOB fully but Coming Down is still my favorite song on the tape and one of my top 5 favorite Weeknd songs. It is pretty crazy how far he’s come as an artist, I remember in high school when I would say The Weeknd, people would be like “who” now he’s one of the biggest pop stars of this generation
Man during that era in my life (2008-2014) I was living a similar life style though it wasn't constant one night stands but usual flings that would turn into constant or frequent meet ups till some would turn into "relationships" but really they were hollow and drug filled. Usually stemming from Xtasy or smoking weed. Pills or some other narcotic. Some would last a few months.. or years then end and I'd be with someone new fairly quickly. I was fairly popular in my area because of the music I was doing and would throw parties that would turn into new parties.. Daily. I was never alone. To me it always felt as though some of these girls really only liked me for my " popularity/status" or whatever. Or the drugs I could get them because I knew so many people. I was a very depressed and resentful person back then. The drugs did not help. I had a lot of fun sometimes but at the same time all of it felt very hollow and empty. I really didn't get into the Weeknd till around 2015. The older songs really encapsulate that feeling and it kind has a bitter sweetness to them but I would never want to return to those days.
Illangelo deserves way more credit for this and as a producer in general, Trilogy is one of the best produced albums ever made
I love how this analysis wasn't the same information in every other video on HOB, more original points explained in a different perspective, great video!!! Looking forward to Thursdays breakdown
Thanks so much for your kind words!
I wish the weekend kept this style of the trilogy
29:42 the fear of morality is so real. Doing the right thing and living up to society’s standards is so hard sometimes his only way to cope is to give in.
trilogy is a underrated masterpiece, like people barely talk about it
I love the video but I strongly disagree about The Morning. My interpretation has always been that it’s a song about sex workers but in a way that honors them and not objectify them. He uses his own story as an analogy: he respects the sex workers because they put in so much work to get what they want, money, just like he does. I’ve always saw this track as the exact opposite of a disgusting show of character, as the first glimmer of a moral compass on the mixtape which just makes the character so much more complex. HOB is such a brilliant mixtape and my favorite song I’d have to say is The Morning.
I can see how you reached this conclusion for sure... but I wouldn't say that a glimpse of moral compass would make his character more complex, it would just be out of character. I would agree with you that it is an anthem of appreciation for those people - but not out of morality, out of selfish lust
That's professional.. opening song from kissland
@@JacksonsMusicPalate That's also fair. Art is what you get from it, isn't it?
This video deserves more views 🔥
“It’s this Consistent fear of trying to escape vulnerability that causing him to make every choice on this mix tape” … wow this is definitely one of the reason why I feel so connected to his music but wasn’t sure why! I’ve been listening to him for yearssss!
Genuine top quality content. Have been a big fan of The Weeknd for a long time and watched many videos delving deep into his art - this is one of the best I’ve ever seen. Keep doing what you doing bro you got a future ahead of you with this shit fs!!
Also what weeknd song mentions gangrpe😂
Initiation is one
Thank you so much for your kind words!
Initiation is about gang rape
Life of the party is even worse
Hurt people hurt people. Broken people break people.
Love from others is received When you love yourself.
Break the cycle.
I wish it were as easy as just wanting it.
Writing an extended essay on his discography this really helped me
the albums we're:
House of balloons
Thursday
Echoes of silence
All combined the trilogy.
13:31
you did NOT just say that The Morning is close to being a “sell-out” pop track…
Ikr!!!! 😮
Glad I saw this comment so I didn't waste time watching the entire video 😂😂
He said that? Im glad i saw this comment so I cn just dislike and dip, wtf
Here comes the sun, to me, is one of the most entrancing relatable tracks I’ve ever heard
It’s hard to pick a favorite but coming down & the morning would be the two fighting for #1 imo
I always thought of him as a sleazy Phantom of the Opera...great series man!
The weeknd is a musical genius. My favorite song off the House of Balloons album is wicked gamea i love the beat to this song.
Wicked Games
The Knowing
What You Need
House of Balloons
The Coming
Loft Music
Lonely Star
Thursday
The Zone
Thank you for perfectly encapsulating and interpreting this incredible album
mixtape*
The first song I ever heard from The Weeknd was “the morning” at a strip club and I’ve been hooked ever since
u use some big ass words but I love your dissection/interpretation/explanation of this !
Thank you my friend, for your kind words and encouragement :)
Wdym “song about gang rape” cuz I’m not very aware of this weeknd song 💀
Some of his songs 💀
in his songs he usually wants the girl to fuck his friends/gang also. In some of his songs he says “there’s something i need from you, i need you to meet my boys”. He also got a song named initiation which is literally him just convincing the girl to take drugs so she can fuck him & his friends
Initiation is the song he’s most likely referring to if you listen to the lyrics of that song…shi it’s up to you to decide what’s going on
Really
This is a beautifully haunting album
The morning is about how he thinks the women feel. That they don't live him, or have to love to give, if it's not to money
Im stuck in this loop…I can’t stop listening to these XO albums, the zone and Thursday hits different on that beat Frfr😮💨💯🪽
KING OF R&B
Do the same thing with his new Trilogy!
Such an amazing video!! Great job!
KING OF R&B

Loved these Trilogy vids, will you continue to do the rest of his discography?
Fire intro song
Great video, love your take on HOB. gave me more understanding. Thanks
I loves this video. I watched it along to listening to the songs and it all tied together perfectly. You just earned yourself a new sub
Bro on god
I just turned on my notifications for all your post. I am doctor & I approve this message: wow!! Phenomenal take, vocabulary . Iike you said all the right things and sett a standard
What does being a doctor have to do with anything?😊
Any plans of reviewing kiss land , and have u listened to the project ?
Great video by the way
this cool and all and i kinda agree but superior trilogy >
4k subs ? Bro deserves more.
I connect to the XO albums idk why I just do someway inside😬💯🎶
bro theirs a fucking ad after every single song explanation
I'm not going to lie. I have to rewatch the first couple minutes of this video because 911 was on in the background and I found myself singing it and not listening
this is the best video on house of ballons hands down
Making songs about “gang rape” ??? Yea we must not be listening to the same artist…
in his songs he usually wants the girl to fuck his friends/gang also. In some of his songs he says “there’s something i need from you, i need you to meet my boys”. He also got a song named initiation which is literally him just convincing the girl to take drugs so she can fuck him & his friends
Listen to initiation ….
@@DinosmashI can see this interpretation but this sounds more like a montage of The Weeknd and the girl he is with for the night. The girl takes her first hit of whatever The Weeknd gave her in XO/TheHost and now in Initiation everything is now fast moving and she is doing more drugs with him and she is having sort of a bad trip and everything keeps moving fast around her. The weekend referencing boys is just him talking about his friends who can get her whatever she needs to keep that high going and keep the party going.
bro started edging from the begging
…coming down also hitz different as well
Amazing video the weeknd I'd my favorite artist of all time. Also please do a video on kissland. Please
Totally agree. Loved this video essay🎉
Really edged us all on that intro beat drop
Amazing video with brilliant analysis. Kiss Land video when?
Trilogy and Born To Die 🙏🏼
KING OF R&B
This is his best album
Nope Kissland is
Pls add subtitles
it s not about gang rape wtf
Why do u keep using the word ‘victim’ rather than a willing participant?
Dang. You just made me realize that Trilogy is a story! 👍
His life style was the thing the drew people in & it was also the thing that pushed them away. Tragic story told beautifully
13
Tbh this video is a horrifying masterpiece as well
How the song quality soo high in vid
0:58 when Df did he make that song
19:12 where does he reference H?????
Great analysis
14:30
4:30
Amazing
Man ur so fire for this😭😭🔥🔥🔥could we pleaseeeeee get a link to the instrumental @ 0:48
Pretty sure it’s the instrumental to Tyler, the creators song 911/mr lonely
KING OF R&B
I understand why people love this project. I love it too. But it's NOT a masterpiece. Not at all
i just explained for 30 minutes in a video why it is and this is all you have to say lol
Fair, I think its an amazing narrative, just a somewhat OK album. Only like 3 good songs in there and everything else is ok
It changed the sound of rnb in the 2010s. Gtfo lol
amazing video earned sub 👍👍
Praise God
💯💯
What song are you refering to when you mentioned song(s) about gang r*pe?
initiation, it's on the echoes of silence mixtape!
I can’t tell you the last time I made a RUclips comment or social media in general, but by any chance do you have an instagram? I need to follow you
