    Thanks for this info! We'd met at least once, maybe twice, not too long after you guys had opened on East 9th street in the East Village. I do remember how cool and patient you were with me, sharing details about how to buy and take care of your hats, letting me try on one hat after the other. I'd never got around to buying any for myself, but I did send around a couple of friends who are everlastingly satisfied for your service. I now live in Sweden (Stockholm) with my wife. But I still come back to New York ti visit friends and relatives alike, as often as I can. Thanks again and I hope we meet again in the near future.

    I watch a lot of videos for guitars,music gear reviews..
    and they all begin with a little title header, a heavy metal guitar playing solos in the background,or some heavy blues guitar..they're all boring to watch,I always skip that part..it's a waste of 10 seconds.
    I chose to skip the intro on purpose. It becomes a drag when u watch a lot of
    you-tube videos, all those intros..
    I'd rather just get to the point.
    But I always appreciate the input,advice. I'll think about it.and thank you, I'm glad u enjoyed it.

    precisely, u can just change up the crown, for a pork pie, it's good to use a little ruler, measure how high u make the crown on all sides, it'll keep it even.. make sure u make the thing deep enough too. Lower pork pies look cool,
    but too low will look really bad,like a muffin or something, the top gets bubble-like..
    best of luck, if u are in NY, bring it in!
    I'll reshape it into a pork pie any day u come in.. take me 5-7 minutes..

    Kevin,
    Please do a video on how to curl a brim up like that on the green hat you’re wearing in this video. There are plenty vids on flattening a brim but I’ve not seen any that show how to create a flange that allows that brim to be flipped up symmetrically 360. How do you accomplish the upward curl brim?

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  4 года назад

      I’ve made videos on the subject, how to get the flange (curve) back in a floppy, soft brim.. a few like that, and I do that a lot whenever u see me steaming hats, but sure, that’s a good one, u got it.

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  4 года назад

      It’s not something I can explain in a sentence or two, u need to stiffen the hat, steam it,and push it from the other side of the brim to enhance to curve, then use the edge of a tabletop to get the edge straight..hard to explain, but I’ll try to make a video on this

    I'm trying to make a Buster Keaton pork pie. I've read that using a wool felt hat is not ideal because wool doesn't tend to hold its shape when reformed. Do you agree with this? I'm just looking for a cheap hat for a Buster Keaton costume and all the cheap fedoras are wool.

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  4 года назад

      Yes, wool isn't steamable-shapeable but u can get minimal results,I don't suggest using wool.. look for fur felt.

    What's the best pork pie hat to buy can u just get them at Walmart or somewhere else?

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  4 года назад

      We sell various types,and every year they’re a little different. The best type is made fro, 100% fur felt. Not wool. These are the real deal ones, but they cost twice what a wool felt one costs, A good cheaper one to look for is the Stetson Cranston model, it’s made in Mexico and sells for very cheap. If u buy something Walmart quality, it’ll be fun for a little while, but the first rain it’ll all but dissolve. A good inexpensive one is called the “stingy wool pork pie “ on www.jjhatcenter.com its made in NYC, USA and it’s been a top seller for a long time, short brim, black..very cool and compact..it’s a stiffer felt, so it’ll hold its shape for a long time...and for the price, it’s a wonderful hat,

    Do you have any experience with Filson tin cloth packer hats? The material is oil cloth and probably thinner than felt. I've heard steam is a big no-no with this material. I just bought one but would really like to learn to shape it

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  8 лет назад +1

      Steam is a GIANT no no for oil cloth or waxed cotton. It basically makes he wax melt and creates a big spot on your hat, don't try it.
      The reason we sell 99.9% straw and felt hats only here is for that reason
      U can keep reshaping me, like a shoe shine..
      U bring it in, we give it back looking nice and new.
      Have u ever had a really good she shine ? Where u are shocked at how new it looks afterwards?
      It's like that,
      If u spend $350 on good Italian fur felt by.a 200 year old hat company,
      U will probably get great results after steaming.
      Leather, oil cloth, waxed cotton, suede, cotton, linen,canvas and all these other materials just wear out,
      Some people like the look of an old weathered leather hat, that's cool. But otherwise,
      there are reasons why felt is so popular, I wear my green hat every day, it's very old, and I never really do anything to it, not even steam.. I just hang it up.
      It takes rain,snow..and I've worn it,rolled it up countless times..for years. Good felt.

    hi kevin,
    is it proper to have the flange to be more upturned (curled up even more than what you have at the end of the video)? the reason i ask is that i've seen pork pie hats that are shaped like the way you did it in this video, but i have also seen some with the brim curled up a lot more. also, what's the best way to curl up the brim more?
    thanks

      Spray some ultra hold hair spray on the underside of the brim,thin,even,misty coat. let it dry.
      (dust it w tape first before spraying)
      then steam the front half of the brim,underside only,keep spray and steam AWAY from the leather sweatband,cover it if u can,or avoid it carefully.
      when it's steamed and still hot, put it on the table top and press down on the brim w your fingers, right where the brim meets the crown,in that corner.its a pivot point,the brim should pop up if u do it right.
      .press hard,keep all your fingers in a row,like a semi circle,the front of the brim should pop up, enhancing the curve to the brim.
      hold it perfectly still, until it cools,
      After that,
      if u need more..
      u can just steam in that same corner u pressed down on.
      ,on the overside of the brim this time,and w your hand on the underside, push the brim up into place, it should flex as it heats up don't force it, push gently as u steam,(andwhile it cools,hold it still)
      press the underside of the brim up towards the crown.
      It works better w the spray,
      If u are in NYC,bring it in..I'll do it free
      Good luck😎!
      Kev

    I'm amazed at how you can take a 15 year old hat and make it look brand new, so cool, and great video but a suggestion you should make like an intro or something that you can put at the beginning of all your videos, just so the videos are more like videos I guess and not just clips, anyways thanks for another great video, I hope to see more in future

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  5 лет назад +1

      Thought about it, it's an excuse to make some music,too. But
      I usually skip those intro things, when I'm watching RUclips.
      I kinda pride myself on my unedited,unscripted style..I never cut out mistakes, or start over when I screw up.
      I like that.
      But it does come off as unprofessional, no production or slickness anywhere..
      A nice intro might sort of compensate for that a little..
      Maybe a short one,
      like 5-10 seconds..might be cool thanks!

    can I do this with an iron? I know this is a silly Q but I'm serious. there are no hat shops in my city at all.

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  8 лет назад +1

      Hope, an iron makes things flat, nothing is flat on a hat really, if u had a flat brimmed hat, u could iron the brim, but those are rare, 99% of hats out there all have curved brims.
      U can use the steam from an iron, or the steam from a kettle,
      but without stiffening a hat, steaming alone will probably undo any definition u already have,hereby making a hat worse, especially a weak source of steam.
      U stiffen with spray,let it sry, then steam to soften an area, and hold it into place as it cools.
      without strong steam and some hair spray to stiffen, u just really make a hat worse.
      Watch a few videos of mine where I fix the hats,and watch how I stiffen them first.
      if u can get some steam going, it may work, be careful not to get burned,it can be dangerous using any steam.GL!

  • @XxGhostDOGxX420
    @XxGhostDOGxX420 9 лет назад +1

    my hat is losing the pinch on the right side. the concave isn't deep like it is on the left side. how do I fix this?

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  8 лет назад

      Steam the front and sides so u soften that whole area by both pinches.
      Quickly Re-pinch it so it looks more even, before it dries..
      and then hold it in font of a fan to dry, carefully, hold the pinches still ,under the fan,for a couple of minutes until it's dry. afterwards, look at it at a birds eye view to see if the symmetry is ok. U can adjust it while it semi wet. This works very well with 100% fur felt hats, if u are using wool, it's very hard. Almost impossible.
      U would Ned to spray that area w hair spray first, let it dry, the steam it, pinch and hold..cool w fan..
      Wool hats are technically not shareable this way, but u can sort of do it, u need hot steam and some spray.

  • @KTGHATS
    @KTGHATS  10 лет назад

    No steam for oil cloth. It will melt the oil or wax on the cloth, definitely no. The advantage of felt is that u can shape and reshape it, cloth of any kind or leather, suede can't be shaped. One reason why u see felt and straw in the better hat shops is this, oil cloth and waxed cotton is impossible to shape. Try stuffing the crown w tissue very firmly and tightly,then shaping it slightly, for the crown. Use weights to flatten the brim, let it sit for a few days. Although it may not work much, u can try.
    These hats are inherently wrinkly by nature, just accept it and enjoy it.. Not much u can do. Thnx k

      U can't reshape a cotton hat, which is precisely why we stick to fur felt & straw, which can be reshaped.
      You can't use this method on cloth, leather,suede, cotton,tweed, rain hats or anything else.. just fur felt or stiffer straws.

    Great videos! I'm in the process of converting a women's felt hat that originally had a wide swoopy brim, down in back and front, arched over the ears, into a pork pie. The crown is now pork pie shaped instead of the original bowler shape thanks to your video. I trimmed down the brim to 1 1/2" and applied light coats of hair spray and let it dry overnight. I can't seem to get the brim to curve upwards evenly, nor have a snap. Since this hat didn't have a snap brim to begin with, does this mean I won't be able to reshape it into one? Also, is there a standard diameter I should try to achieve in the crown ring that distinguishes a pork pie?

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  9 лет назад

      The curve on the brim is called the Flange, when a brim has no flange at all, it's really tough to create that curve with your hands and steam. You really just need to get the brim professionally flanged, our hat makers can do it for $20. but if the felt is wool and really cheap, it's not worth it.
      There are ways to fake it, you can take another stiffer hat and use it as a mold...but the hat has to be a little bigger size and the right brim size, which is unlikely,unless u work at a hat shop, you won't have a bigger hat on hand.
      Also, when you cut a brim, you usually cut off the curviest part and what is left behind is the flat part. After you cut a brim, it needs to be re-flanged.
      You can steam it on the top of the brim where the brim meets the crown, soften the back of the hat.. and then take your fingers and push down on the brim with two hands, right next to the crown, so the back of the brim kind of stands at attention,. hold all ten fingers firmly down on the back of the brim until it cools. if the brim looks a little curvier,try it again, rotate the hat and do it all around the front and back brim until it won't go up any more, this may help a little.
      After you get some curve back, you can get the ripples out of the edge of the brim by steaming the brim and laying it softly against the table top, using it as a straight edge, I do this in most of my steaming videos..
      it's hard to explain all this, I'll try to make a video sometime..
      Most likely what u are trying is not going to work much, just accept the brim for what it is and work with it.. If you can't get a hat to do one shape effectively, it may be best to go for another approach.
      As for the crown, all crowns are different, there is no standard diameter, all the sizes from small to XXL are slightly different too. The person who creates the block, or mold, for the hat's shape designs it the way they think looks aesthetically pleasing, while keeping it deep enough to fit well.
      Use your eyes, it's good to measure the height of a pork pie crown, so it's even looking. after you get the height even, you can try to modify it a bit,lower the back or whatever..but this is the one shape I usually measure, for symmetry etc

    ow do you reshape a cotton pork pie

    • @KTGHATS
      @KTGHATS  4 года назад

      U can't really, steam takes out wrinkles..
      If it's the crown,
      You can try stuffing the crown really tight w tissue,or paper until it really tight, and try to form it into the shape u want, hit it w steam...let it dry. Sometimes this helps,
      if it's the brim, try covering the brim with a cloth ,then iron it flat, put heavy objects on it, keep the cloth between any weights and the cotton..so u don't make marks on it w the heavy weights
