- No-commentary gameplay of Willow. US Version. Arcade. Hardest difficulty (Hardest). Nando Speed Normal (this means the number and speed of apparition of random enemies. In very fast the game becomes impossible) Game completed with 1 credit. Played with MamePlus 0.134. No tools, cheats, autofire, re-recording or save states were used.
Willow is a superb game from Capcom based on the famous fantasy film of the late 80s. This game is simply brilliant, everything is outstanding here. I'd say that is probably one of the best games from a film franchise ever released.
The game is quite similar to Warner/Pyros from Toaplan. It shares the same mechanics, even the shops to buy new items, but everything is improved.
I used to think that this game was quite hard back on the day, but after playing again recently, I discovered that the most important thing is knowing what to buy, more than having skill. You should always buy the weapon upgrades, which make the game a lot easier. The highest peak of difficulty can be found in the cart chase. After that the game gets again easy.
Capcom also released a Willow game for the Nes. The game is completely different from this one, and it's more similar to The Legend of Zelda. Anyway, the game is also great.
To sum up, I can only say that this game is fantastic and you should try it if you haven't done so far.
My mum used to own a corner store here in NSW Australia and she had a rotation of games through for the local kids to play. There was on one guy who beat every game we had in, I spent hours watch him play them, including this one. He was my hero.
I watched a older kid beat this and just stood in awe. I couldn't even get past the first level lol. He made it look easy. Funny how we never forget things like that even 30 or so years later. Being an arcade hero was definitely a thing, especially to the little guys looking up to you.
I feel like every small town had one guy in his late teens/early twenties who inexplicably knew how to 1cc a bunch of games that rotated through the local fish and chip shop or video store
Well it took about thirty years but I finally got to see how this game ends 👍😁
Damn, graphics were much better in the arcades back then.
Willow’s little spear-throwing assistant clearly appears to be immortal. I wonder why the mission to save Elora wasn’t assigned to him.
Hey I'm late af, but today my dad told me this game we used to play is based on a movie and decided to watch it. The spear dude is a forest creature, through the film him and another one accompany Willow and Madmargdigan through the adventure, but they are useless and annoying. Still, was cool to watch knowing all references of the game!
@@ericsito52 I think they were supposed to be the R2-D2 and C-3PO of the movie (It was created by George Lucas). Unfortunately, they're both Jar-Jar Binks.
who else here cause they never finished it?
Battle at the end of stage 4, with Sorsha, was as far as I could get.
Got that right. Never saw anyone get past the second level at my arcade back in the day.
I used to beat this game on one quarter. I'm a little out of practice. I learned a couple of things watching this game play. He is missing a major tactical technique against the main bosses. When fighting the boss with Willow destroy the boss with Gold Magic on his last hit point. You will double all the Gold you get.
I came here because my dad was telling me how he completed it with 1 coin and I wanted to see how hard it was 😂
@@JRyoga couple folks at my arcade could complete it w/one credit; used to all crowd round the machine -Tron style - it was awesome to watch!
"I love you, Sorsha?" I don't love her, she kicked me in the face!
After searching a lot, finally I found it. I used to play willow in my childhood and it was one of my favorite games. I also cleared all the levels. But unfortunately, I forgot the name of this game. But I am lucky that I found your video. It feels really nice when we recall our childhood memories through these videos. Thanks a lot!!
I remember being a young kid and going into a local movie rental store that had a small arcade room. This was the game I used to play all the time. But hearing that death dog howl brought a nostalgic shiver down my spine. So awesome!
First time seeing this game. I don't know how I missed it. Love these Retros. Thanks for the great gameplay.
Thanks for your comment! You should also check out Nemo by Capcom and Wardner by Toaplan. The latter is probably the main inspiration for this game.
I remember playing this game once in an arcade. I never saw it again after that and when my brother rented Willow on the NES, I was excited. But then I realized the NES Willow was a completely different game and I was somewhat disappointed. NES Willow though is a good game, but this arcade port sadly eluded my entire childhood. If it weren’t for RUclips I would have completely forgotten it.
I know its too little too late but if you hit bosses on their last block with Willow's max charged gold magic, it gives you double the worth of the coins they drop
I didn't know that. Thanks for the tip. Hopefully, I had enough money for everything I wanted, but that trick is really helpful.
This is STILL helping people. Thanks Leo!
Back when we actually got decent video game tie-ins to movies.
Heh... SOME of the arcade versions of game tie-ins to movies were decent back then. The home console versions were absolute crap though, as they are now, and more often than not didn't even follow the same plot as their movie counterparts!
Yeah as long they were Japanese produced.
Love this movie and the game. Classic 80s.
Much respect! I used to watch the older kids at the arcade beat this, nearly 30 years later and i figure i'll give it another shot, now that it doesn't cost a small fortune in quarters from mowing lawns!
I can beat it even now that I am 45. When I was a teenager, I spent some good hours in the arcade playing this game until I learnt it by heart. Perhaps my favorite game ever.
@@m.angelo2454 I just got an arcade cabinet and seeing the attract mode play in my room is... surreal lol. Never thought i would see the day where Willow is on a cabinet in my house. I had my mom get me the NES cart thinking it would be at least somewhat similar. BOY was i wrong! First lesson in console v arcade back in the day.
Good times! Watching this years later to learn where to properly farm again since i forgot 😂
@@EQOAnostalgia To be fair the NES game was decent, though it was more similar to Zelda than Ghost 'N Goblins
This games fun... But I remember a painfully expensive learning curve (for me anyhow) at the arcade!
Pounded another beer and just beet this one credit clear finally. Felt so good. Amazing game. Thanks for the help
Congrats Niggel! I'm so glad that my gameplay was helpful. Indeed, this is a great game. Regarding the tiny secondary character, I'm not sure if he deals any damage. I think he can kill minor enemies but I'm not sure of it. It's been a while since the last time I played the game. Regards!
@@MrMaskaman okay, I think I will skip the hidden character from now on. He's entertaining but distracting.
I showed my wife the silly intro video on the home screen of your chanel. I think it's hilarious but she did not agree.
Haha, your comment made my day. That intro was created by a good friend. He just told me one day: hey, I have something for you. And he showed me that ridiculous intro. There are some references to recurring jokes from my videos and also to some Spanish characters. It's a pity your wife didn't like it, but most people love it. I think it's the best thing you can find on my channel!
@@MrMaskaman haha what a cool friend. I'm from USA and I don't get all the references but the images with that music are hilarious no matter where you're from
This game looks awesome. More my speed, than the one I ran through on the NES. Great job!
+Bedlam Video They are both great games but each one with a different style. The Nes game is a very good Zelda clone, and this is an excellent platform-arcade.
+Maskaman
It is kind of unfair to call Willow (NES) a Zelda clone. The extensive magics, the sword mastery curves, the artwork, and the levelling of both the character and the equipment all make Willow a very different experience than Zelda.
That said, both great games. And this arcade one is pretty great as well.
Sorry, it wasn't my intention to underestimate the Nes version. It was just an informal and general way of classifying the game. Willow it's one of the best games in that genre and it's even better than the two Zelda games for the system.
My family loved this movie! How did we not know there were games made based on it?!
+Eric Whitney There are three games based on Willow. This arcade, a wonderful rpg for the Nes and a very crappy game for PC, Amiga, C64 and Atari ST.
I think I'm going to have to look those up...
Capcom was just the best when it came to arcade games.
The days when Capcom and Konami could do no wrong.
And Konami too
Incredible!! Well done... This is my second favorite arcade game of all times. First one will always be Shinobi for me.
THIS GAME LAYED THE GROUND FOR THE NEXT TEN YEARS
Such a classic game.
Very well done and thank you for uploading this. This game brings back memories for me of when I was a child and playing video games in the arcade
I remember my first experience with this game was while attending a science fair contest at a college when I was eleven. While waiting for the judges in the student lounge I got to watch one of the students do a playthrough. He did quite well until the final boss which kept getting the better of him until he ran out of quarters. Fun times, even if I was only an observer (I kept telling him he needed to buy more max health powerups :P).
Funny thing is the year after that I got to do the same thing over but this time got to watch someone beat Street Fighter 2 with Blanka when the game was brand new. Shame both my science projects bombed in the actual contest I was supposed to be there for :P
I didn’t know you could get a brownie to help you.
It's like an even smaller midget to help your midget. lol
And get brownie points too.
The music in this game is quite amazing!!!!
Loved the movie... loved the game. Even played the NES rpg version.
Nice game, thx! Been years since I saw the full one.
The sprite helper was cool, very Magic Sword-like.
“Your mother was a lizard!”
I never knew they made a arcade game.
What a beautiful game! Side-scrolling hack-and-slash platformer! Got this on the Pandora's Box in HD baby!
Oh wow. Which Pandora's box?
That wolf howl is chilling!
The fish as a nod to the Fish Boy is a nice touch.
Really well designed game. Not sure why they didn't expand on the concept and release it on SNES.
It’s a movie that’s why, movie came out in 1988 and the game followed it in 1989 now there is a tv show about it in 2022 same actors too
I could never get passed the 3rd level playing at the Bayfair Mall arcade
I was finishing this game with one coin when I was 10, one night I found this game again when I was 18 and lost at 2 stage miserably
the stage two's the worst...
Surviving the cart ride is tough. You need to master spacing with the sword.
My favorite arcade of all time 😍😍
Those platform jumps at 30:30 were my biggest hurdle. Being off by a pixel meant a long fall.
Don't let this gameplay fool you... this game was HARD AS HELL!!!
“Take these two lizards and drown them.”
That stage 4 dragon was IMPOSSIBLE!
At the end of the third stage you should attack Mage boss until the life energy is just one left, then use gold magic to kill the boss, it will x2 all the prize money. works also on all other boss fights :-)
Juegardo amigo, me dio nostalgia verlo y lloré.
excellent gameplay on a classic game. it would've made a good game for Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo.
The NES version of Willow (an action-RPG, and not a linear adventure game like this) is much more difficult.
Ghoul's N Ghosts, Super Ghosts & Goblins, and Mega Man X would be the best comparisons, you can clearly see the similarities in gameplay
Baffles me why this isn’t on any cap com collections. I was hoping it would be on the new one.
I think it's because they have to buy the film rights again if they want to publish the game in any kind of collection.
When did Capcom make Super Ghouls and Ghosts into Willow!?!?! How have I never heard of this!?!?!
Music, Graphics, scope and even story well done for this arcade game. The only complaint is the jarring charing FX.
You know at 15:36 there was a way they could have fixed those cave sprite’s, all they had to do was change the “black” background to match the color of the stage sprite’s (the seen blocks). Its funny because I noticed it as soon as I seen it.
It's been a long time since I played the original game in the arcades so I don't know for sure if it's a problem of emulation or the game is just like that but yes, it's quite noticeable, haha.
Goodness me this was a tough game.
+Ed Fortune I thought it was impossible when I was young, but once you know which things you have to buy, it gets a lot easier.
i remember playing this a lot. There were certain parts where you could play as willow or madmartigan - I know there was the part where you fought that 2 headed dragon that you had to be willow because madmartigan had no ranged attacks and the dragon always killed him because you had to get in close to hit the dragon heads whereas willow could shoot magic bolts from far away and it was easier to kill the dragon.
I see. Kinda like Metal Slug and Contra. I loved this movie as a kid
Game looks amazing. I loved the movie growing up as a kid. Never knew this existed. My only thought of a drawback is the charge bar sound effect. It's pretty constant and annoying. Otherwise seems awesome.
Good run. I only grinded the bats where you messed up casting the gold spell but still I know from experience this is no easy feat.
7:30
"That takes care of the rabble. Now we stop, peck!"
22:19
The Eborsisk!
Kael ordered his troops "Destroy the beast; Find the baby!"
Airk: "Win this war for me... Argh!"
Hey! Who are you calling me peck?!
I did finish it. Have it on my modded Xbox with cheats installed. Love it
@Maskaman - I have only seen that character in stages 1, 3 and 4. I used to regularly be able to beat this game in the arcade myself; I'm pretty sure that you're correct.
Thanks Jesse! I remember spending a lot of time searching for this side character in the other stages with no success. So, it must be true that he only appears in stages 1, 3 and 4.
Imagine how many quarters it would have cost back in the day to beat this
took me like 30 dollars in quarters probably to be able to beat it with one quarter. got to the point i could beat it with rarely dying.
it's an easy game overall i think. there's not enough randomness to it so once you learn it it's just simple memory. there were other similar adventure games that were much harder, clearly designed to get you to spend more money.
@@u235u235u235 So the answer is... 120 LOL
I always used Willow's gold magic to deliver the final blow to bosses. Double the gold :)
My seventh grade English teacher made us write a paper as one of the characters of the movie 🤷♂️
You're welcome :-), I subscribed your channel and must repay you someway for all the entertainment. Greetings from Italy.
This and the Nintendo game were awesome
The Nintendo game was a rpg this one is more action adventure
my friend used to do this daily at the arcade.
Peck!
1:42 I've 1CCed this game, and I had no idea you could get the brownie on the first level.
Uno de los pocos juegos que me pasé con un credito. Muy bueno.
De los mejores juegos basados en películas. Una maravilla.
Loved this game back in day, took me lots of pocket money to finish it. One mistake in this video is bosses can be killed with double coin values if you time that ability when boss only has one bar left.
Yes, you are right. I didn't know until later. That trick can make the gameplay easier, since you can buy more things at the shop.
Love the bouncing metal guy at the end, from the movie.
Fantastic player!!
Thanks mate!
You can kind of tell in some ways it's a Capcom game, even if you didn't see it...the font, and music seems to suggest it. Oh, and around the 25:00 mark or just a bit after, you are reminded "this game was made by the same people who made the Mega Man series" with those annoying disappearing platforms (although they're tamer here, touch wood)
Gameplay reminds me a lot of Ghosts 'n Goblins. With some elements of Kid Icarus?
And Little Nemo too.
Well played
Ostias este juego como me gustaba a mi de pequeño jeje ya ni recordaba que existía
2:47 nostalgia overload
The absolute madman.
18:00
So Willow was sitting there the entire time and Sorsha did nothing? Also,Spear throwing guy got down from the mountain awfully fast...LoL!!
Been working on this one for a couple years now on default difficulty / speed. Just did a two credit clear. I can feel the one credit clear coming soon. I've been referencing this video once in a while. Thanks dor the upload.
Got a question, is the brownie bonus character of any use? On the snow level he attacks the boss but doesn't seem to do any damage. I think he fetches coins once in a while. I've been avoiding him because he distracts me.
flying each thing, item. kicking everyone
Well done !
Tengo los juegos, son maravillosos ahora recuerdo mi juventud, saludos
Brilliant as always.
That bit in the boat is a deleted scene
Wow this game looks good for 89 ! :o
I'm just getting into mame gaming and trying to figure out how to approach beating these games. So far I have researched this game and aliens vs predator. Both games look beatable on one credit, hardest difficulty. I noticed on this game that the speed setting is not at max difficulty...This mame thing is complicated I am used to playing nes games where you set it to max hard and beat it--simple. I never tried beating nes games on one life. Battletoads or Ghossts and Goblins one life sounds painful. Are there any websites out there that have info on how to approach beating arcade games on mame?
I remember that I tried setting the speed to the max and the game was almost impossible. Maybe there's a way to beat it but the enemies were too fast. Both challenges are possible. I even find the Ghost'n Goblins one easier than the Battletoads one. There are some gameplays here on RUclips showing how to do it. I don't know if there are websites showing how to beat arcade games. I think that the best thing to do is looking for gameplays here on RUclips or MARP, but I would do that as the last resort, because discovering the best strategies is part of the challenge too, and most times, it's even the most difficult one!
This was much better than the Nintendo version by far.
Back When Capcom was Capcom but there slowly coming back.
Talk about a more fun and advanced ghost and gobilns, while capcom on the nes made a more advanced and fun legend of zelda with willow lol.
I'd say that this game is also heavily inspired by Wardner from Taito.
You are an arcade owner's worst nightmare.
I don’t understand how the gold drops work in this game. Is the amount each enemy drops random (i.e 1, 10 or 100) or is it based on how quickly you pick the coin up? Why is there a large coin in your treasure chest top left before the first shop, but only an 1 value coin in mine? Confused about this... but a fun game anyway:)
I think there's always the same amount of money in every stage but it's random where it will appear. Maybe there are 5 100-coins in a stage, but every time you play it will be dropped by a different enemy/chest. It's just a guess, anyway.
@@MrMaskaman Thanks! I’ve been playing this a lot recently and came to the same conclusion. One nice thing about this game is they give you so much by the end it isn’t really a big issue if the drops are somewhat random. Awesome stuff btw! I’m working towards a 1CC and am using this vid as reference:)
Update- got the 1CC. Such a fun game!
1:51 what the hell... I've played this about a hundred times and never knew the brownies were in it... wtf
You can find them in a few stages, not all of them, and they appear in different spots (which are close to each other). It's just randomised.
Seems more like a console game than an arcade (difficulty aside) yet it never got a home port. Reminds me slightly of Mickey's Magical Quest.
My favorite game 1994
Ryukahr should play this :)
10:14 That jump is extremely difficult. How do you execute it?
12:32 I think he should have used the spell that turns enemies into double value coins on the boss as the final hit. More money.
32:10 I never beat this game because of the set of jumps here. The only times I've got past here were a fluke.
Regarding the first jump, you must keep pressing diagonal and up (maybe just up), if not, Willow won't grab to the platform.
And about the spell thing, it's been a while since I last played the game, but I'm not sure if you can do that.
Willow games
Arcade version: Stunning gameplay.
Nes version : Great RPG style with Willow can use sword instead of magic power.
Pc Version : Not really impressive really. Just some puzzles solving and click and point game.
One coin one man? What a w anchor, I fkd that little guy up and never had him by my side, tygood for saving my time practicing ⚽️🏈🏀🌏🌍🌎⛅️✌️
The difficulty curve of the game starts quite high, especially in the wagon part, then the game gets easier when you get more powerful spells. All these retro games are about practice and memorisation.
@@MrMaskaman I’ve got a mame arcade emulator, I finally beat Rtype and chelnov atomic runner, I’ll have to try again at Willow ✌️👍
@@Jack-bf6hv If you can beat those 2, trust me, you can beat Willow too. They are way more difficult. In the end, Willow is about what to buy first and survive the cart stage, then it's a piece of cake.
The name of the FBI director that appears on the warning message at the begging happened to passed away the same day I found this video...today.
It’s honestly surprising that they bothered to make final bosses for arcade games like these, since at the time 99% of players would never get that far
It has sound effects from Magic Sword.
My childhood days 😥
Wonder if this was made by the same developers of strider?
18:01 _Ice Cap Zone Act 1_ anyone? 😁
Only the NES port makes mention of Zhena and Muzh. . .
best gamer
Thanks! Not the best, just another player :)
