It is a new term that has always been taboo with purists but it is here and it is a wonderful way to express yourself.

Hi I think you have managed to describe how I paint when for years I struggled to understand why I was not able to state clearly “”my artistic style”. I once had a customer tell me I love your paintings because they depict realism but at the same time have an abstract quality!
I should have listened more closely. I have subscribed to your channel with the hope that I will understand “alterism” better . Thank you!

“Purists” are just artists who are stuck in a box and know very little about concepts outside of that box. They are comfortable in their box and want everyone else to be in their box. It’s okay to have a singular focus to your art if that works well for you and makes you happy. But it’s a problem when you lash out at everyone else doing what you don’t understand. We find our joy in different ways. And realism is just one of many genres. Those who explore multiple genres are also happy. It’s exciting!

Life is abstract realism on a daily basis, it permeates our subconscious process , you are.exposing the perfection of imperfection. I would suggest that surrealism has an important, intregral part to play in this idea, concept…thanks

This is very deep and very relevant… literally everything in our life is abstract realism. From the quantum to the perceived is a series of abstract realities. there is order and chaos, and as a concept these two are complementary.
I have also been creating art in this fashion. i’ve been drawing since I was very small, always loved art… Portraits are my favorite. I have a rare genetic disorder that causes blindness and it is progressive. So most of my world has become very abstract. However I still enjoy aspects of realism in my art and I combine it with elements of abstraction. So I can really relate to this video. Thank you so much!!!!

Thank you for this video! I just painted my first canvas in March 2023 and trying to understand what is 'my style.' 35 years ago my teachers always said that I was not good because I never could capture the realism of my drawings and told me to basically 'give up. My drawings are from fantasy and would probably fall into abstract realism. I don't care about proper colours and if the shadows are perfect... Am I getting across a feeling is more important to me.
Now I am painting on canvas for the myself. Untrained obviously, but having fun... I loved your distant lights analogy! Your vid gave me a lot of motivation! Maybe this term is my style.

If I may, I do understand your explanation fully as well resonate with it. However where would you draw the line with abstrast/realism and essentially impressionism?
I get the same feeling looking at an impressionistic made painting where when you look at it up close it falls into an abstract form of mixed colors and brushstrokes yet at a distance can look vividly life-like. Being an amateur painter myself I personally must resist the urge to label my own artwork, as this or that, and let the viewers determine the encompassing term to be used.
This is just me of course and feel anyone is free to choose what they wish to call their artwork, however they'll need to justify their reasoning to compel others to their specific art form or movement..
With this being said I enjoyed your video of explaining what abstract/realism is and support your thoughts on the subject. The last thing id have to say, which by the way I am in no means being argumentative in my stance or previous comments, is dont be so quick to gerrymander your form of artwork because it may constrict your creativity if your consistently trying to follow the guidelines set forth from your descriptions of "abstract/realism".
Thats enough of my rambling, I'm curious of your thoughts are on my point of view.
    Until next time. Peace! ✌️

Hi Matts yes any form of using an abstract method to convey a recognisable object will fall into abstract realism. Up until now it has always been classified abstract or realism and I’m trying to debunk that approach by saying you most definitely can combine them. As far as my work is concerned I call it Alterism as I not only use Abstract Realism but also use destructive enhancement and by doing so alter the artwork by destructing it hence Alterism. A new approach to art where destructing it enhances it … I hope that explains my motives. Thanks for the comments

Interesting, Cartographers wrestle with this in a similar way, There is no such thing as an accurate map, since all maps are abstractions of reality, every map like art begins abstract since a 3D world is immediately a 2D representation. Like art, maps reduce detail necessarily, it is fair to say all art is abstract. It varies by level of abstraction, just like map making.
