      Nope. Cleaning and housekeeping are constant obsession. Navy ships need constant cleaning for spotting technical problems, water leaks, oil leaks, early stage rust and corrosion. A navy ships that is allowed to get dirty is a serious germ and fire hazard.

      Hahaha, they were. When you are standing port and starboard watches, which is 6 hours on and 6 hours off they are great. Oh the 6 hours off, that is when you eat, sleep, do PMs and corrective maintenance on your gear, gamble, write letters, watch movies...then back on watch for 6 hours. Good times. My assignment to Minot Air Force Base proved to be an eye opener. Be it the leadership of Staff Sergeant Elkins, Administrative NCO, Lieutenant Furst, Administrative Officer, or Major Smith, Detachment Commander . . . my performance kept them 'on their toes' due to my lefty approach, in all my affairs, both on & off duty. What was so great about MInot . . . leaving !
      The grand phrase about Minot, was the following - 'Why not - Minot, Freezins' the reason . . . where there's a girl, behind every tree . . . but there's no trees, in North Dakota' ! 🇺🇸

    I retired from the Navy after 21 years. My first two ships were COCHRANE (DDG 21) and SOMERS (DDG 34). Small square lockers, no coffin racks, our racks were canvas and rope on frame. The heads were awful, including the toilets and sinks. Any time we were underway, we were on "water hours" (no showers for 2, 3 or even 4 days at a time). The mess decks were cramped and always hot. The new Arleigh Burke DDGs of today are indeed pure luxury compared to COCHRANE and SOMERS.

    I was a BM on an old ATF. Believe me, these sailors have no complaints.
    My ship was a good ship. Our big gun was a 3"/50. We could outshoot the computer guns of the '70s.
    We rocked and rolled more than destroyers from any era. Don't listen to the Whiners.
    We were out there to serve. WESTPACs, rescues, towing, supplying, and much more. Still, I earned my 3 Nam ribbons.
    Also got to visit several good ports: Singapore, HK when it was British, Sasebo at Christmas in the snow, and even Eniwetok. My uncle worked in that region during the tests. I never dreamed of visiting that kind of place. Oh and we saw lots of the Philippines, Guam and Hawaii.
    Almost the only thing we didn't do was cross the Equator. We got within 60 miles of it but got called back for an important duty.
    Complaints? That Congress lost us that war, and that we had to remove our mines from VN harbors. I'm not proud to be in the only war we ever lost. But my naval experience, otherwise, was good. Very good.
    Thanks for this video.

    Navy enlisted active duty here. It is my duty as a decent human being to be honest before anything, for I serve and will serve for many years my loved USA with honor, courage and commitment. This man is not being honest. There is almost no space to store underneath the racks. The beds are uncomfortable and they don’t even show him getting into one, they cut to when he’s already in one. Most water fountains don’t work, showers are dirty and the floor is lava almost literally due to germs. The food is plain bad. And the amount may not be enough if you’re a strong big man like myself, that different from almost all surface warfare I workout. You almost never have time to eat at peace because you got to go back to work. The dude is even broke. CMC is engaged in the duties he mentioned but its absolutely random if that person is actually qualified and cares about the people. It all is basically up to the Chain of command. It’s a hard working environment where you may end up doing what you don’t like with a bunch of unprepared people. If you are going to SERVE, it’s exactly that, a SERVICE. God bless us all that serve, it has good parts that I can elaborate on if anyone asks me about them. Do not be fooled, it’s not easy.

    I served aboard USS Sampson DDG-10 (LANT SHIP). Good look'in ship; good crew. 1200PSI plant. Our break-away song was "East Bound and Down" from Smokey and the Bandit. She didn't have all the neat stuff DDG-102 has; but still was my home.

      Relative to a Fletcher, yeah. A DDG's as big as a Cleveland CL, but with fewer crew than an old DD. My grandfather had the same remark when I showed him photos of berthings on a Spruance - he was on a Sumner back in WW2.

    Lifer dog!!!!! Although I made E-5 (IC2)in 2.5 years , declined shore duty for arduous sea duty and completed two Persian Excursions on two different combat ships, I would NEVER recommend the USN as a career. It's a great 2-6 year "Life Experience" for any young person. However, as a career it generates little retirement savings for enlisted personnel, has horrible retirement health care and the transient life style of going to sea does NOT lend itself to ANY kind of normal family life and in fact discourages the married lifestyle-John in Texas

    • @GFSLombardo
      @GFSLombardo 5 лет назад +1

      Thats why its called military SERVICE, not "Life Experience". Horrible health care and retirement benefits? Millions of AMERICANS would kill for all the guaranteed retirement and health care benefits, etc. retired military earn by doing their 20 years of ACDU. Civilian work/life is great if you are earning a high 5- 6 figure income. But how about when you are laid off or your 401K plan from your private employer goes down the S....T Hole in a recession? Retire at 38 or 40? How about at 70- or never? Transient lifestyle? Did not your recruiter ever tell you that Navy ships move around-frequently? OOPS! Glad you are happy in your current non-military life. I am sure that you are now finding the same level of camraderie, loyalty,generosity, crazy fun, and brotherhood that you found during your navy days.
