There are pros and cons when it comes to joining the Navy. When one goes into a Navy recruiters office for the first time, the recruiter will mainly tell you the pros, and try to avoid telling you the cons as much as possible. But some recruiters might caution you if you get too excited. Having been in the Navy myself, I learned of what it may be that might drive some to go UA, or as far as suicide. Working hours on a Navy ship can be extremely long, especially when you are out at sea, or as some call it, under way. A lot of brochures may tell you that you can puck any job you want, but the guarantee is the technical, or "A" school that might train you for that job, but once you finish your school, you may end up wherever they need you, which could be a totally different job, one that you might really hate, and although most sailors do get to jot down their choices of where they would like to be stationed on a "Dream Sheet", very few might be lucky enough to get one of their choices, but again, most will be sent to wherever they are needed, even if it was not one of the choices they put on their Dream Sheet.
The CO of that ship should be relieved immediately. I was on a Gearing Class Destroyer in the mid 60's and we never had poop sloshing all over the place. Anything out of order was repaired/replaced same day. And the showers are disgusting. Does anyone ever clean them? The bunks are a mess. This ship is a disgrace. Jesus Christ, does anyone ever inspect this place?
Back in the 80s and 90s, we had compartment cleaners, and we had our personal areas cleaned. These areas look terrible. Even the MSs have a clean berthing areas.
I served 22.5 years in the Navy and 19.5 years were spent onboard ships. None of my ships were in this condition! How in the world would the U.S. Navy allow these conditions? Why would this to be uploaded to RUclips? Ridiculous!
Hell nah they need to upgrade that shit big time !can you do a video on what your job is for 14 hours and what is the point of being on a ship for the navy or what is your mission for 8 months ...
Man, that compartment looked tore up. Don’t wanna make any assumptions since I don’t know the details of what was going on that particular day, but damn! Anyway as far as falling out of the top rack. I remember my father was a bit of a roller and he went into the bone yard and took out a couple of middle seat seat belts from a bunch of junked cars. Before that he used two belts to hold himself into the rack
I served in the Navy from 1991 to 2006. What you are experiencing "used" to be very rare. I guess it's more common now. I don't know what type of ship you are on, however. I do know, that if that is the berthing conditions. You need to let your division chief, or officer know. That's completely unsat. There are ways you can fix this. Let your chain of command know what is going on! I was a Hull Maintenance Technician, on three different ships. That clogged toilet in your berthing compartment would have been taken care of THAT day, when I was still active. ( I had to take care of any where from 200 to 2500 toilets and urinals daily) ((depending on the ship)) The condition of the showers, unfortunately, is the responsibility of the BPO. (Berthing Petty Officer) As well as the very few VERY young enlisted folks that are supposed to clean these spaces. Maybe sometimes you could maybe VOLUNTEER to help? Believe me it helps, it shows your willingness to go above and beyond what your regular duties are. Ok done with my piece, you do you. Please consider what I said though.
I served aboard ship in the 60's and what this man shows would never be accepted on my ship. This ship is an unkept ship. One of the problems with todays ships are the smaller crews with a lot of automated equipment. That also means they don't have enough people for maintenance and compartment cleaning.
thank god for this video. my recruiter is about to be mad. had to cancel my wednesday appt at MEPS with him after seeing this...bout to go holla at the Air Force...put my 71 asvab score to better use....plus im 37, i cant live like dat
About to enlist in the Navy (hoping for AC!). Now, I'm not throwing shade, but I would think that Navy leadership wouldn't allow THAT kind of uncleanliness to fly in the service. I'm not Mr. Clean over here, but if it's to the point where feces-infested water spills into the SHOWER AREA . . . that's a problem. I was homeless this past year, and even the shelters had enough sense to do that much. To stop toilet water from forming puddles all over the place. Are you at liberty to share what ship this is? I appreciate the video either way. Definitely a real video without frills.
Getting Better I get what your saying but when I did this video it was in the middle of the day when everyone was working it’s not always like this but I do wanted you guys to see the ship no sugar coating. We could do a little better with cleanliness it’s just be so much going on when we’re out in the waters it takes time. This is a LPD class ship I won’t put the name out tho.
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 LPD? I might not be on it then seeing as how ACs are on bigger crafts (for the obvious reason). I'm happy to watch though. Keep showing more of the ship. If I end up going ship duty first instead of shore, I was hoping to go on the new Ford supercarrier they're working on. Will you be uploading more content?
These racks and head are absolutely filthy, I've never seen anything like it. I was in the Navy from 65 to 69 USS Arlington agmr2 Damage Control 3ed and everything was Squared away and Ship Shape. Am sure that not every ship is in this condition, at least I hope not !!!!!

I was in a berthing compartment with 68 people on a carrier. The second class PO would have shit purple bricks if we ever had a sleeping area as unkept as this one..I guess the Navy really is going down hill
I don't like dirty shower walls and I hate seeing or using backed up toilets and heaven forbid if backed up toilet waste were to hit the floor or even touch my skin. I would be pissed as hell.
This is some real stuff. Actually looks more spacious than some of the bethings I saw on carrier ships. Just curious, do you enjoy life on board a ship? Do people get seasick much and how's the food/gyms and stuff?
While im on the ship i hate it, but some things i do miss about living on board. I still get sea sick when the seas get too rough a lot of the newer sailor get sick. You start to get use to it after a while.
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 Cool, I appreciate the quick response. Rough waters was kinda what I was worried about but if I can get used to it then I should be good to go. That’s another big one to me because I gotta have my sports lol
5:34... And you speaking that troof. Men and women be pent up and be waiting for that portcall. I know, I did 21yrs of Coast Guard and I was on ships most of the times. We all have needs.
So much for ship shape. When did it come to be you could leave your bedding area in such a mess? What happened to being able to bounce a quarter of the tight bedding? This is not the Navy I recognize at all.
Mercy it’s not like this on every ship. Not even on this ship it’s like this every time. The navy is tough but it’s what you make out of it. I’m sure he will make a lot of memories!!
I was on a cruiser in the late '70s. Our head was always kept clean, even underway. The HTs were pretty good at getting clogged shitters cleared. We also did not have gear adrift like this. Our division was usually on port and starboard watches, so someone was always sleeping, so uniforms would be hanging on the sides of the racks, but that's it. We had coffin racks but no curtains.
The Official Dave Harris I feel like the top beds need some type of fence that can be pulled up or down to keep people from falling., Especially if the ship is moving a lot. Just a thought.
Thank you very much for showing this side of things. I’m in the process of joining. Is there like a gym or something to help take your mind of the boredom?
Former SSBN submariner here...we NEVER lived in filth like that. That's one of the reasons I volunteered for sub duty. Couldn't stand the thought of serving on one of these rickety broke down ships.
Not all ships get that much storage space it all differentiates on CVN-69 Dwight d Eisenhower we have a coffin rack and a stand up locker. On the CVN 75 Harry s Truman they have racks that have nobody in the top racks normally empty for your sea bag. That’s the air department berthing though so it all differentiates and they all look different as well.
Boris Johnson damn y’all trainings are long. Our training is 8 weeks then we go to school for our different jobs. Do you know what job your going in as?
Yeh I’ve applied for a marine engineer which is basically a technician (keeping the ships electricity and engine running) what job do you do in the navy?

I served decommissioned ex-hmas Newcastle (modified Oliver hazard Perry class frigate) and we had a 60 man mess. Same number of heads, showers and sinks with cleanos twice a day. I slept in a top coffin and had my Jesus bar. Getting out wasn't the issue, getting in was. I had to swing off the light bar in and one day I missed. Straight into a coffin locker and slashed my leg up. Peace from the r.a.n brother
What’s the point in having so many people on board a ship? In my mind you only need like idk 100 people to drive the ship and clean it etc. why is there like 1000-1500 people on a ship?
because they need to be able to give people time off to sleep, and if multiple people with the same job were to get sick then they would be undermanned. they have people working at all hours of the day
I was on an ammunition ship in 1973 we had a crew of 350 enlisted and 50(I believe) officers. You have to remember, there are so many jobs to do onboard ship. Food services such as cooks, bakers, and such, Electricians, Gunners, weapons, radar, Laundrymen, Communications, Medical, Engineers, Engine, Boatswains mates, clerks, Payroll, and many more, Navy ships for the most part are self sufficient and are like a town or city, Most jobs run 24 hours a day, (not all) and some sleep while others work, there is always, chipping, painting, basic repair and preventive maintenance going on....Plus ontop of that when at sea, we stood watch besides our regular jobs.
we have the same problem with showers and toilets on the ship. toilets are vacuum and often clogged. just as often the scuppers are clogged and the water is ankle-deep on the deck. The rooms themselves are also quite dirty. although we have a cleaning sailor
Y'all ain't see the last ship I was on. There were 3 heads in the ship that had showers. 1 of them belonged to Deck and Engineering only (cleanest I'd say) the other was both Marine and Navy (also shared by officers cause their head was doo doo too). The last one was Marine only but it only had 3 stalls and 1 shower. One day, a toilet blew up and all that doo doo flooded the main head that was shared by officers. My Berthing was right outside of that so they roped it off and made us sleep on an LCU ( I was attached to anyway). Lord have mercy!!!! This is nowhere near as bad as it could get.
in the army i had a area 18 x12 in kwanson hut overseas with a desk, bed, locker, apt size refridgearator & a kick ass componant stereo from the P X as a E-4 CPL & a house boy to clean up after me he washed+starched laundry every day +spit shined boots he even got out skid marks for 20.00 a month in korea in 1980 20.00 was like 150.00 there econmey was so bad
Gerrod Brown that what it feels like. You get use to it tho. You might get some navy seal that will catch a ride on the ship but they won’t stay the whole deployment it just depends what their mission is.
Served on Coral Sea in the 80s. Was shocked how bad the heads looked. We had daily cleaning by newbies. I mean if are Chief or Commander saw that he would set up a hourly inspection until it was cleaned up, completely unexceptable . Sorry you have to serve like that.

OldSalt lol.. I just got it at a bad time. I guess it’s a new navy.
Back in the 80s and 90s, we had compartment cleaners, and we had our personal areas cleaned. These areas look terrible. Even the MSs have a clean berthing areas.
Yo I thought the military was all about being clean
Glory Manz believe it or not we clean sooo much in the navy..lol.
Will be enlisting into the Navy in 8 months wish me luck 💪🏼
Good luck bro
how is it
I served 22.5 years in the Navy and 19.5 years were spent onboard ships. None of my ships were in this condition! How in the world would the U.S. Navy allow these conditions? Why would this to be uploaded to RUclips? Ridiculous!
Louis Karnbach thank you for your service!! It was just one of those days during the middle of the day when a lot was going on I guess.
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 yeah but that mold in the shower didn't happen overnight
President JFK said "You know your in the Navy when you are brushing your teeth while There's someone just 3 feet away talking a dump."
Ships captain should be charged with neglect of his troops. Sad, Navy should be ashamed!
Somebody should have been held accountable!
That’s cool of your father!!
( I had to take care of any where from 200 to 2500 toilets and urinals daily) ((depending on the ship))
The condition of the showers, unfortunately, is the responsibility of the BPO.
That is so true! Not enough people.

Thank you for watching by the way🙏🏿
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 LPD? I might not be on it then seeing as how ACs are on bigger crafts (for the obvious reason). I'm happy to watch though. Keep showing more of the ship. If I end up going ship duty first instead of shore, I was hoping to go on the new Ford supercarrier they're working on. Will you be uploading more content?
Getting Better yes I will so stay tuned and thank you for watching.
Man being a submariner I’d love to have a place to sit up in my rack! And 4 lockers?? We have a 5-6 inch tall flat pan and a single locker 😂

I don't like dirty shower walls and I hate seeing or using backed up toilets and heaven forbid if backed up toilet waste were to hit the floor or even touch my skin. I would be pissed as hell.
I remember taking a shower and the ship was rocking and I would bump into the walls🤢🤮
The gyms are decent we had 4 gyms on my ship. Its just get packed when the Marines are with us. The food is decent some days are better than others.
@@theofficialdaveharris8794 Cool, I appreciate the quick response. Rough waters was kinda what I was worried about but if I can get used to it then I should be good to go. So much for ship shape. When did it come to be you could leave your bedding area in such a mess? What happened to being able to bounce a quarter of the tight bedding? This is not the Navy I recognize at all.

Feeling some kind of way. I just want to rescue you all.
Thank you for your service I know times have changed a lot since the 70’s.

idestroi1 that’s how they should have designed this type of ship.
I’m assuming you set an alarm to wake up when you have to. So, How do you wake up at a certain time without waking up everybody in the berthing?
Jadyn Perrotta yes most people use their cell phone as a alarm.
The ship calls Reveille every morning at 0600 to wake everyone up. It’s pretty much like someone telling us to wake up over the
Intercom.
Its not just a job its an adventure !

When you sleep at night does the ships provide Air Conditioning. I need AC to sleep lol
Yes they have AC the berthing can get pretty cold.
The Official Dave Harris I feel like the top beds need some type of fence that can be pulled up or down to keep people from falling., Especially if the ship is moving a lot. Just a thought.
NS R they should but the ship doesn’t rock that much probably on smaller ships. It’s still a long way up if you fall off in your sleep.
Thank you very much for showing this side of things. I’m in the process of joining. Is there like a gym or something to help take your mind of the boredom?
That must be a Sub, they call them ships too.

Straight into a coffin locker and slashed my leg up.
Peace from the r.a.n brother
Man that’s crazy! Peace and thank you for serving!
What’s the point in having so many people on board a ship? In my mind you only need like idk 100 people to drive the ship and clean it etc. why is there like 1000-1500 people on a ship?
because they need to be able to give people time off to sleep, and if multiple people with the same job were to get sick then they would be undermanned. they have people working at all hours of the day
I LL give you less than week of running an LPD with 100 people for crew before the ship sinks .
I’m a CSS2 cross rating to IT. damn man... shit looks just like a sub berthing. Great , can’t wait.
i want to cross rate too. but the year i came in is locked up so im stuck with CS

we have the same problem with showers and toilets on the ship. toilets are vacuum and often clogged. just as often the scuppers are clogged and the water is ankle-deep on the deck. The rooms themselves are also quite dirty. although we have a cleaning sailor

Everything look so lil OMG 😭 I’m trying to weigh my options because of how picky the Air Force is but this video is making it hard
I would definitely try and go Air Force first. The navy would be my second option. Every ship doesn’t look like this tho.
What I remember from being on a ship are those nasty smells lol.
Curlytop Asmr Lee yes the food is not the best a lot of going to the ship store and vending machines.
