- Seven and a half years in the making, The Moon's Milk is an entirely handmade stop motion animated short about a time when the moon was close enough to be reached by ladder. Narrated by Tom Waits, the film chronicles the last expedition of Captain Millipede and his crew to harvest the milk seeping from the craters. The action take place between the gravities of two heavenly bodies, which further complicates the attraction between the characters. Longing, missed signals, and mishaps lead to the enchantment of the heavens with music.

I would listen to anything narrated by Tom Waits!🥰
He is a great devil in The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnasus. Also his song plays on Enron documentary.
He might read out a phone book.. I'd listen with pleasure.
What a beautiful little film. Really obviously a labour of love. Can't think of a better narrator for it than Tom Waits- just a perfect choice for telling such a weird, crooked, bittersweet story.
Fantastic work! The story is similar to Italo Calvino's "The Distance of the Moon":
"Climb up on the Moon? Of course we did. All you had to do was row out to it in a boat and, when you were underneath, prop a ladder against her and scramble up.
The spot where the Moon was lowest, as she went by, was off the Zinc Cliffs. We used to go out with those little rowboats they had in those days, round and flat, made of cork. They held quite a few of us: me, Captain Vhd Vhd, his wife, my deaf cousin, and sometimes little Xlthlx - she was twelve or so at that time. On those nights the water was very calm, so silvery it looked like mercury, and the fish in it, violet-colored, unable to resist the Moon’s attraction, rose to the surface, all of them, and so did the octopuses and the saffron medusas. There was always a flight of tiny creatures - little crabs, squid, and even some weeds, light and filmy, and coral plants - that broke from the sea and ended up on the Moon, hanging down from that lime-white ceiling, or else they stayed in midair, a phosphorescent swarm we had to drive off, waving banana leaves at them."
It's a while since I read it, but I think it's similar right down to the sad twist at the end. Amazed they didn't say inspired from Italo Calvino's 'distance of the moon' in the credits.
@@joshc6569 I agree. It borders on downright theft!
This is actually the *second* musical stop-motion rendition of the story I've seen!
The first is Bombay Bicycle Club's video for How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep, which is more loosely adapted but even better than this.
true--Moon milk, a musician, a deaf character, a captain, etc.
@@RandomAmbles IMO, it is theft. Which absolutely sucks - I love Waits and Calvino both, and I even love this film, but it's Calvino's story with only a few minor changes. Not giving Calvino credit is just inexplicable and unforgivable. BOO
Once in a while, with the most auspicious of conjunctions, you get thrown a crab; and what a magnificent beast this one is!
This was lovely but I honestly would listen to anything as long as Tom Waits is narrating it ;D
My favorite Italo Calvino story!
I loved it! I love Tom Waits, he is the most intriguing person in the world to me!
i’m so freaking glad tom waits exists!
I really loved this, Tom has such a great narrating voice x
What an astonishing labor of love! And I could listen to Tom Waits read the phone book and be transfixed.........
Agree 😉👍💞👏
Cindy Crawford received a Thank You and Blair Jackson a nod as a Kickstarter contributor; good for them!
Italo Calvino's story 'Distance to the Moon'
Tom is the finest of wines. He's always been good but then he just gets better and better.
That was one of, if not the most sublimes things I’ve ever watched. Bravo!
Unbelievably so very goooood.....
This is lovely, and I love that it was narrated by Tom Waits, but please credit Italo Calvino's "The Distance of the Moon" as the inspiration in the credits.
Agreed, can't even find credit on the website of the film.
I was wondering about that myself. A rather strange omission.
I agree but this version is much better than the inspiration maybe they did not want to connect themselevs to such a pointless story such as that one
is it from le cosmicomiche ?
Wonderful... wonderful little short.
Love the wind blowing on the hair, amazing work!
Tom Waits turns in another piece of perfection...
This is my niece and nephew's favorite bedtime story
Absolutely awesome story and stop action animation!!!!!! Well worth the many years you must have put into its creation. Sure to be a classic!! Tom Waits is the perfect narrator. gb
That this is so so so so nice, it only makes it hurt more than Calvino isn't mentioned once! Wtf man. Is there some reason the original story wasn't acknowledged? It would only bring more viewers to this, a wider audience. Attribution is only respectful and doesn't detract from the quality of this wonderful film. I see it mentioned on the Vimeo page of the video, but again - wow.
Was this from the Italo Calvino story? Brilliant!
Can we finally agree as a collective that accordions are cool yet?
“A gentleman is someone who can play the accordion, but doesn't.” T.W
Anything Tom does is cooler than an Inuits nose....
they CAN be cool, but also not so much.
Sure, they are 👌🏼
Anyone who says otherwise has clearly never listened to The Kongos.
That was absolutely wonderful!....Thank you to all involved, I will show my kids. They will love this!
Amazing. Loved it. Tom has such a great distinctive voice.
This is a truly lovely film! Thank you for sharing it.
Wow, beautiful! I love Tom's narration
How beautiful.
Bravo! to all involved... and special thanks to Tom 👌😎
This is great !
This gave me the warm feeling i was searching for...

Waits use of language is inspiring and makes me laugh too.

the beauty of puppetry. thank you for that
Really enjoyed watching this while sitting under the Milk Moon (March 29,2021)
lovely alchemist tale of a psychedelic kind ♥️Tom Waits
Watching this for the first time was a neat way to start the day.
Tom Waits.....the VOICE!!!
Very cool, and charming.
Why does this only have 3k views? So good...
I think this was hidden on RUclips until 1-2 days ago!!!!!
Maybe Tom had hidden it until now for some reason....
I was really wondering how I have not seen it yet nor has it been recommended to me yet!
Beautiful Work.
fookin' amazing
The greatest thing on You Tube.
Wow...wonderful...congrats...!!!!!
Beautiful and amazing skillz of stop motion animation and musicpoetry 🥰really 💯👏💞🌝🌌🌠

Amazing!
really nice. Still kinda odd not to mention Calvino somewhere
Magical.
Fantastically weird. I love it.
Pure Genius ;)
Damn, that was good.
My god that was amazing and inspiring
This is where lockdown has taken me; and I don't mind.
Precious
I can't believe that now is when I found this.
"Don't plant your bad days. They grow into weeks. The weeks grow into months. Before you know it, you got yourself a bad year. Take it from me - choke those little bad days. Choke 'em down to nothing." - Thomas Alan Waits (A famous native Californian from a middle-class family)
This was fantastic
oh, do ya know, i thought it wasnt possible to like Tom any more than I already did, but I do ! :)
Shivering truth
Wow.
Happy moon festival all
really great
What a terribly wonderful story.
The funk music in the background killed it for me
like in a bad way? lol
Sad and beautiful world
Very nice! :)
So that's why we went there...
I love this except for the fact there is absolutely no mention of the fact that it is definitely a take on Italo Calvino's short story. I love Tom Waits and don't blame him since he is he is just the narrator, but someone should at least credit the story.
Tom is the king.
This is wonderful. Too bad I never got my perk for supporting it on Kickstarter.
Italo Calvino
The best godam thing I've seen on the interwebs today.
I loved it but I think the music could be a bit quieter so I can hear Tom
Cool
Also watch the movie Upside Down (2012).
this is real good shit. this is the content i'm here for
Not the best stop-motion ever but still quirky and interesting. Reminds me a little of ''Mary and Max'', which I highly recommend.
🎉 magic🎉
Please credit inspired by Italo Calvino, "Cosmicomics- the Distance of the Moon"!
Fuckin awesome. Im guessing that was the whole thing. I thought it was just a trailer.
All I can say is shit fire and save matches. That was good!
Way to go Phil Tippette and his crew
cool
Muito bom
Great 'fairy' tale!
Where can I find more Tom waits stuff like this?
Has this been released yet?
For sale somewhere?
Don't have time to watch it now, but saving it for after work today. Question, though: is this really a trailer for a longer film? Or is this the complete short film?
nah trailers aren't 12 minutes long. this is mislabeled.
👏👏👏👏👏
AWESOME THIS WE NOT PROMOTING IN HOLLYWOOD!! thanks an rockOn!
Why didn't I know Tom waits had a youtube channel???
most singers do because they're set up by their record labels.
You Win 😁
Woah!!! And whats the name of the song at the end??
how the fuck this doesnt have enough views?
this is a trailer?
Kind of sounds like Miller from the Expanse
