  • In this weeks video we build a simple wire antenna for the tecsun pl660 radio. You can use a random length of wire 5m,10m,15m, what ever you have lying about your shack. You will also need a jack plug and a Crocodile clip to complete the build this antenna is simple to build

I've got two of the Tecsun PL-660 multi-band receivers. They are a good radio 📻 but you DO need to connect up a decent antenna. The better your antenna, the more "Signals" your going to receive.
THANKS for the demonstration. The younger folks especially need to understand these basic principles of Short Wave reception!

I always put a ring terminal on the other end. Then I can tie on some line to throw it into a tree, or a hook with elastic, or whatever. You can even attach more wire on it to extend.
Always use heat shrink! It will save the solder connection from breaking, and keep the wire straight or the bends smooth.

Very strange: When I connect the wire to the shorter piece of metal on the 3.5 jack - like you did - the radio overloads. When I connect the wire to the longer piece, the signal is good. Why would that be? I use a MONO jack.

Pl330,360,660 are the model numbers of the radios . The pl360 from what I’ve read online doesn’t have ssb only fm/am. It all depends on your location and what interference you might get from other devices

The older Sony ICF Shortwave portable radio uses a mono plug in the external antenna port. Yes I guess the only way to know for sure about the effectiveness of your stereo plug for external antenna is to do a comparison with/without external antenna. Does reception really improve?
Also a lot of major sellers of these external antenna plugs use mono jacks.
