See, existence has three pillars - Time, Space and Matter (The Holy Trinity if you prefer religion terms). This is something that both science and religion agree upon. And while time and space are infinite, matter is not. There is always a specific number of people, animals, objects, etc. Like when you throw 2 dice, there are only 36 combinations that can come up. The more you throw both dice, the more often the same combinations you will get. If you throw them for eternity, they will repeat forever. Thus when you have a limited amount of things, existing in an infinite universe for an infinite amount of time... they are destined to repeat. Again...and again....and again...

It just struck me, with the perspective of the dark series, and Rust himself saying "I tell myself it's to bear witness." Thats what he is throughout the series. The witness and commentator, who feels powerless. Whenever he tries to become a part of life it blows up in his face. The death of his daughter, and the end of his relationship with Lori. Which it is revealed in a deleted scene was caused by his unwillingness to bring children into the world. This video perfectly shows how Marty is the one who thinks he's so important. The participant of life in stark contrast to Rust. Rust thinks he has life all figured out but doesn't truly live, and Marty lives but knows he has nothing figured out. In the end, this show is about perspective. Flat circles, dead children, stars against black skies, dead gods - old and new. We're forced to bear witness, along with Rust, to the worst of humanity. Even Marty with the benefit of hindisght is finally a Witness to his own life rather than a mindless participant. Finally arriving at the nihilism of the show. Stating as a fact that there's no purpose, no ultimate meaning to the immense suffering depicted. But we who are witnesses, finding perspective in a world we're often powerless to change.
they shouldve never produced another season. its impossible to live up to what they did in season 1 as far as story telling, character development and overall acting goes.

He said himself he had PTSD and was in a psych ward but much of his problem is he is more intelligent than his co-workers or most people so he's alone with his thoughts too much and because he's so smart and sulky it makes him seem suspicious himself so he's not paranoid he just has heightened awareness. It is an ugly world too he's seen ugly things so many maybe he can't see beautiful things anymore. Marty is too casual a partner for him too he lost his family tragically and Marty just willingly throws his away.
