    Hi everyone! Thanks so much for stopping by :D don't forget to like and subscribe for more content.
    I received several questions about my grad school program so I thought I would make it a series, starting off with the application process. In the future, I'll be going over what my course work looks like, the differences between a specialist degree and Ph.D., as well as why I decided to pursue this field.
    I know that most graduate programs emphasize the importance of research, but since the master's/specialist program is more hands-on and technical, they typically favor experience over research (not saying that research is not important!). I just wanted to mention this since I didn't really touch upon it in the video.
    Feel free to leave any questions or comments below!

    Hi Tiffany!
    Last year when I stumbled upon your channel, I was in doubt of what career choice I wanted to pursue after my BA in psychology. I subscribed to your channel not knowing that you were going to post more videos of your school psychology life/program. I have been following you since. Anyway! I appreciate you!! I have watched all your videos up until now and I wanted to personally thank you for sharing your journey, as it too will be mine soon. I recently received an email stating that I have been accepted to a School Psychology Program in Cali!!! I am incredibly happy to share with you my news as you have been there for me every step of the way virtually. You are so encouraging and honest. I hope one day I can be the same to others.

    Hi Tiffany, thank you for the videos regarding the profession and the schooling! I'm learning a lot from them :) I am currently a college graduate who's interested in applying for a school psychology program next fall. I was just unsure about how much experience I needed to make myself a competitive applicant. The programs I've been looking at seem to have vague expectations regarding experience with working with children and adolescents, and I don't really have a clear picture of the kind (and length) of work experience they prefer applicants to have. I have a good gpa and research experience in the psychology field, and I have some experience working with children. Right now, I work as a refugee foster care intern, and my job is to teach English and do recreational/meditation activities and exercises with refugee children and youth. I was a Sunday school teacher for about 3 years at my local church, and was a private tutor for students (elementary through high school) for 4 years. I don't know what else I should be doing during my break to prepare myself, other than to study for and take the gre. Should I seek jobs in school settings? If you can give me any suggestions regarding experience, it would be greatly appreciated :)

      Hi Kaul! It sounds like you have a lot of experience under your belt already! You can definitely look for jobs in the school setting to get a sense of what the job would feel like. Some of my cohort are substitute teachers, prior teachers, research assistants and ABA therapists. Good luck!!

      I started off as an art teacher and then moved my way up to the program coordinator and then program director. I was there for around 10 years total starting in high school. I provided consultation for teachers and parents and implemented various academic and behavioral interventions for students. It's definitely a unique experience but if you can work with children in any capacity, it'll help you out!

    Hi Tiffany!
    I love your videos and have been watching you for a while now. You’re super helpful!!
    I’m interested in school psychology but I’m just worried I don’t have enough experience in the related field. Plus my GPA is around 3.0-3.2 range, I’m not sure if that’ll effect my application or not so I wanted your opinion. I was originally a biology major but I soon found out that it wasn’t for me and it effected my GPA. After I changed to psych my grades improved drastically so do you think it’ll render my chances of scoring an interview to a program?
    Thanks

    • @TiffanyLee
      @TiffanyLee  3 года назад +2

      Hey Tram! While I think grades and test scores are important, I do believe your essay and work experience speaks volumes in your application. I was originally pre-med in undergrad and had some pretty bad grades my first few years of college. Then, when I switched to psychology, my grades changed drastically as well 😆 it's not too late to rack up some experience before you apply. i know it might be difficult with current circumstances but I don't think it'd be bad to try and seek out positions within a school setting (even it's virtual) or at a daycare or research facility. I think programs will also be more understanding of candidates this year and next. If you're personable and passionate about serving and working with children, I think you have a good shot.

    Hi Tiffany! Can you give me advice on how to prepare for the interview? I know you said to review info on the NASP website, but do you know the best things for me to prepare for/what I most need to know? I love your channel!

    • @TiffanyLee
      @TiffanyLee  4 года назад

      Hey Ki'ara! I think the best advice is to be yourself and practice basic interview questions before you go in (i.e. tell me about yourself, why you want to pursue this field/what drew you to this field, how you dealt with a challenging situation). Additionally, it'll be important for YOU to interview the school and program to make sure it's a good fit for you :) ask some questions and get a good feel for the program. Hope this helps!

      Kati Kochevar I think it really depends on the program that you’re applying to! My program wanted to make sure I was a good fit for the school and that I had previous experiences that related to the field. I would definitely research the specific schools that you’re applying to to see if there’s any specialty or area or professor that you may be able to relate to. Hope this helps!

    Hello, I really enjoy your videos they are so informational! After undergrad, I’m doubling as educ and psychology, I was hoping to work for a little before applying for masters programs. I was wondering did u have to get certified to work as an ABA? If so how would you describe the process of getting certified?

    • @TiffanyLee
      @TiffanyLee  5 лет назад

      Hi! I wasn't certified when I started working in ABA but I highly recommend becoming an RBT so you have some background and training before working with children. Some companies certify you after hiring which is nice! I took some coursework towards a BCaBA before starting school psychology. Those classes were intense but definitely helpful for learning theory and practice when you're working in the field

      You can definitely find jobs as an ABA therapist where the company will pay for your RBT (registered behavior technician) training. It usually includes tests and observations but most companies require it these days which I think is great. You can also find jobs at preschools or substitute teaching! Any job with children will boost your experience and resume 👍🏻👍🏻

      Yes, it's typically considered an Ed.S. but for some it's a master's + certificate of advanced graduate studies (CAGS). If your end goal is to become a practitioner in a school, I'm not sure if it's worth it to get a Ph.D.

    Your videos are very helpful, thank you! :) I am not sure if you can answer this but do you know if you can become a school psychologist without going in to the specific “school psychology program?” Like could I get a masters in psychology and some in background in education, and then still technically be a school psychologist? I don’t have a lot of school psychologist programs near me. Thank you!!

    • @TiffanyLee
      @TiffanyLee  5 лет назад

      Hi Allison! You are required to get a degree from a school psychology program in order to become a school psychologist. The training program is a LOT more intensive than a bachelors in psychology. Some of my classmates moved from out of state and are planning to move back after they finish their internship. Hope this helps!

    Hi Tiffany,
    Just wondering if you could give specific examples of relevant experience or volunteer work that would be helpful for school psychology programs or that would look good on an app/resume when applying to programs? Like, should I try getting a position in public schools, research, etc..? Hope that makes sense.

    • @TiffanyLee
      @TiffanyLee  3 года назад +2

      Hey! This is a great question. Generally, any experience working with children will be great for your resume/essay. Some good examples are working as an IA in a special education classroom, substitute teaching, ABA therapy, and daycare/before or after school programs. Getting experience in an intensive in home setting could also give you good skills and knowledge clinically. For PhD programs, you may need more research experience in a lab since they expect you to do research in their program. Hope this helps!

    • @TiffanyLee
      @TiffanyLee  3 года назад +1

      I think teachers who become school psychologists come with really special insight and experience compared to those without teaching background. If you didn't get your bachelor's in psychology, i would highly suggest researching specific program prerequisites to see if there are additional classes you need to take to fulfill the application requirement (some don't require this). I would also use your teaching experience as your strength since you have knowledge in classroom management (behavior) and academic interventions. During interviews, I suggest highlighting your strengths in the classroom in addition to your interest in supporting student mental health. I'm not a teacher so this may not be the best advice but hope this helps!

    • @TiffanyLee

      it's usually combined (3 years including internship). an EdS program will most likely let you graduate after internship while a program like mine gives you a master's first so you graduate after two years. I think the location of the grad school you're considering is important depending on your priorities. If you want to live near home or family, that may impact your decisions whereas if funding is more important, you may considering moving farther away. With an NCSP, you can work anywhere so I wouldn't worry too much about the work afterwards unless you want practicum experience there during school.

    is a masters program in educational psychology essentially the same as a school psychology masters program?

    • @TiffanyLee

      In the US, ed psych is generally more research heavy and focus on research related to education and learning like the efficacy of an intervention. School psychs are practitioners who work in schools directly with students and staff. I believe in other countries, however, school psychologists are referred to as educational psychologists so it could definitely be confusing

    What did u do to prep for the gre?

      I bought a GRE prep book and spent about two months studying. I think full-length practice tests are really helpful and help with time management!

    How many schools did you apply to?

    • @TiffanyLee
      @TiffanyLee  3 года назад +1

      I only applied to one school but my friends and others I know applied to 2-3 programs. In hindsight, I should've applied to a couple more but I'm glad it worked out for me! What about you?

      @@TiffanyLee OO okay so I have 7 schools on my list lol I was always told to apply to as many as I can and I felt 5 was too little and 10 too small. Is 7 too much?

    Im currently pursuing my bachelors in education( it includes some parts of psychology too) and i want to pursue my masters in psychology. Do you think thts possible as an international student?

    • @TiffanyLee
      @TiffanyLee  5 лет назад +1

      Rhea M I definitely think it’s possible! You may need to do more research on job opportunities once you graduate, though, in case citizenship or a green card is not an option for you. You can always work for private institutions but that can sometimes be tricky
