@@erlingsigurdson3064 There's a lot of good world building that goes into the game, it's a homage to many post-apocalyptic and dystopian games, movies and books with many of the typical doom style secrets you can uncover referencing them. The first installment is a pretty linear level by level set up and the plot has you working towards something discovered early on. The second installment is more expansive with an open world style hub set up expanding on the plot of the first game. There's apparently a third episode in the works which is something I'd be looking forward to.
I have been playing the crap out of this game and Afterglow for months now. It's so good. The music, pacing, all of it. Also, the .45 revolver (either a Smith 1917 or 625) is the coolest starting handgun ever. Just like Indy in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
firstly why "Raiders of the Lost Ark" in particular? Indy Jones always had a SW revolver as a main handgun in the movies . secondly the one of the game it looks more like a S&W model 25 which is a 45. revolver made since the 1950s. It appeared in a a game called Evil Within (which exactly got some parts of a 1917 on it) and the fun fact is that a revolver would be the ultimate handgun to have in an apocalypse since they never jams and tends to be often more accurate than semi-auto pistols
I played this whole Doom mod. It was a beautiful journey, it was a lot longer than I thought. Best Doom mod ever hands down, if this was released exclusively like an actual game I think it would sell greatly
This looks bad ass. Also the sound effects and music are fantastic! So many games have crappy sound for their handguns, but these have a nice sharp crack that makes them sound like their doing damage. Good sound design makes a huge difference!
Thanks for showing this, I didn't know about it! I just recently finished Ion Fury, and booted up Duke 3D again for the umpteenth time as I was still in the mood for more classic shooters, haha. I'll keep an eye on this one!
Never heard this term till now but as a 39yo who grew up with Doom and Duke 3D it amuses me. What I still love about these old FPS is you just load up the game and start shooting, no bullshit 20 minute cutscenes, QuickTime events or tutorials you can’t skip.

You are right, but graphics matter to a certain extent. If the game is so crunchy you can't see anything then I'm not playing. They don't matter as much as AAA games make them out to be.

The creators are such gigachads they released a version that is only the maps and nothing more, so you can play it with your favorite mods (like Hideous Destructor).

I can't believe how many details and things Afterglow has, it's so much more than just a boomer shooter, the exploration, characters quests, music, ambientation, I'm not even joking when i say is one of the best games I have ever played
I tend to play an hour or so of boomer shooters and forget about it, the exception being this game, it's sequel and Ion Maiden. Duke Nukem mods as well.
This mod displays something I see modern fps lacking, the feel of being a powerhouse without the need of rushing and running around from your enemies and thowards them. It makes you feel as the unstoppable force you are supposed to be lore wise.
Calling 90s FPSes "Boomer shooters" is like Boomers calling everyone younger than them "Millennials." Doom and it's ilk are firmly GenX to early Millennial. Boomers grew up with Pacman.
I've played some of this, and it's pretty damn fun. Feels right out of the 90s in the best way. Honestly the soundtrack is what won me over, followed by the sound effects and overall sound design. It's like this game was put in a time capsule in 1996 and just opened now. Feels like a classic we just never got to play, until now. Highly recommend to anyone who likes these sorts of shooters.
This is an excellent homage to Duke Nukem or Shadow Warrior. It also shows, how flexible the Doom/GZ Doom engine is. If one accepts its graphical style, there is not really much more, one could ask from a retro game engine. Its source ports are available for wide range of devices and installing them immediately gives you the possibility to play hundreds of excellent doom levels and dozens of mods that almost feel like standalone games. This is the power of OpenSource community at its finest.
Wait, a Doom mod?? I was watching totally convinced it was a Build engine game, but it's true, there aren't overlapping horizontal surfaces. The level design is so ingenous! It's amazing!
Amazing game, feels like it could have been a legit build engine game from the 90s. Afterglow had some of the most memorable levels of any Doom TC, the stadium, the biodome and of course the secret level. Just one thing I liked better in the early versions was that the bandits only made breathing noises when active instead of talking, I have nothing but respect for the guys who did the voicework, but those lines sound a bit goofy and get old fast.
I played it for like two minutes and I had to stop because I was enthralled.This was awesome, I can't wait to set aside some time to play this for real, good job this is better than the original!
Excellent graphics with GZDoom, outstanding score, marvelous map design, nice secrets....punchy weapons. One cannot go wrong with this one. The only minor thin I found to bitch about is the "town" and the rpg element. For some reason they thought this game needed it....well it does not. Also there is nothing to do in town, it is just a 30 minute long going from here to there which stops the action for no reason. But then we get back on the rode for a thrill-ride we will never forget.
Synced this up with my steam account just to share screenshots with the Doom2 Community. Must have gotten a good 2 dozen people to play this amazing Total Conversion. 40+ hours to beat and all for the price of 0 CAD! ;D

Every Doom total conversion is the DOPE ! Almost not a single one disappointed me. Ashes, Golden Souls 1 and 2, Simon's Destiny, Blade of Agony, Hocus Doom and I'm probably forgetting some. Add to that weapon, monster and gameplay wads combined with an infinity of amazing map megawads and you got infinite boomer shooter goodness !! And now we're even getting incredible commercial GZDoom titles ! What I most fondly remember from Ashes was the ambiance. Particularly in the subterranean levels ! That gave me the chills. I also quite enjoyed the natural progression of gameplay. It went from a slow resource scavenging and ammo saving fight for survival to a slightly more traditional boomer shooter experience with fast paced fights and less ammo worrying.

Well that depends. Standalone mods are a thing but the classifications make them a tricky case-scenario. If a Doom project is using either a free, barren runtime program as a base (ie. Freedoom or Source SDK Base, it classifies as a standalone mod. If it is running entirely from it's own files (ie. an IPK in the case of GZDoom projects), it classifies as a full standalone game.
It's so good they actually made a formal refusal for people trying to give them money.

I liked Episode 1 better than Afterglow. Afterglow was incredibly ambitious, but the first part just had better pacing.
I think theres a sterilized edition for episode 2 that plays like ep 1
