That was producer Don Bustany, who was supposed to send Casey pictures of the musical acts so he could see who he was talking about and what their audience was likely to be like. I'm sure Don was always in a meeting when Casey called.
I think I speak for everyone when I say we've all had co-workers who wouldn't hesistate to transition us from an up-tempo sweep into a god-d**m death dedication about a f**king dog dying.
That Casey meltdown was so funny, I hope him and Snuggles the 'f*cking godd*mn dog' are listening to Dare Me and other godd*mn uptempo records in the afterlife.
I ran his programs on vinyl disc back in 1976 at then WKNR 1400 in Battle Creek Michigan. The program American Top 40 was on 4 album sized vinyl discs and was played Sunday nights. Station is now long gone and is now WBFN owned by Family Life Radio. Call sign WKNR is now in Cleveland Ohio 850 AM.
So they pressed 4 vinyl disks every week and shipped copies to radio stations for broadcast? Interesting . I thought it would have been tape which could be reused. Thanks.
Well, at least now we all can hear the "final" piece of AT-40 production. I appreciate that you actually took the time and ingenuity to put in sync your reel to reel playback with your video. So many times, uploaders either just don't care to do it, don't know how, or worse still, feel it doesn't even matter if they do it at all. Anyways, good job. You must have worked in the radio broadcast industry yourself. The way I kind of picked up on that, is because you "telescoped" or "edited the air check" of the Kasem dedication bit. In radio college, that was what they taught us to do, right out of the bat; edit out the music from the air check and just leave in the part with substance, hence the dialogue. I did notice that one other commentator below said, "Why's it cut in the middle?" Hard to grasp if you're not "in-the-business", but hey, I get it. I took my courses in radio production in 1980/81 have been been working in the business ever since; made a very good, healthy & productive life long career out of it. OK Paul, MUCH MORE than you wanted to hear, but still, I can appreciate one who takes the time to do things right, strive for the mark of excellence and lives out their talents, for as long as they possibly can. I guess I can say, that I tried very hard to do that, and perhaps I did. BolsaChicaRadio (Anthony Ochoa)
BolsaChicaRadio At the time I was just a teenager at the time. This was in 1985 and I just liked recording these shows. With the limitations of timed recording, I only recorded what was necessary. I didn't use this deck to record this. I used an old Sony TC252 that was mechanically a piece of crap, but was one of the best sounding recorders. I had it hooked up to an old compact stereo that I got when I was 12. Anyway, you're not far off what I ended up doing with my life. Instead of radio I ended up in TV behind the scenes. Glad you enjoyed this.
Forgive my ignorance everyone. Im not sure what is happening here. From what I gather from the comments, Casey was angry about something (a dedication he had to do?), he went on a rant about it but it didnt go over the air because it was removed - thanks to a time delay between speaking and broadcasting. Some people are also saying that they hoped Casey was able to see the photos that Don wanted him to see? I'm really lost with that. Could someone please explain all of this to me? Thanks!
I googled "Casey Kasen angry Walt dog", and it gave me the missing info. He didn't want to read a death letter right after an upbeat song was played, and he did get angry, was throwing f bombs, and told his people to use their brains to run things better.
@rcnelson that's all it really is, but you've heard the other clips for sure. I didn't know about the outtake in 1985 when I recorded it. It's not until RUclips had different outtakes. As my clip says, this is what he was angry about...Dare Me being played before the long distance dedication Shannon.
@@greatsajby9266 because it was 1985. I didn't have an infinite supply of recording tape. I also didn't know the historical significance of this until RUclips.
@moreme40 there are genuine audio clips elsewhere but at the time I posted it, there weren't. These were the authentic songs from the authentic show in 1985 that I recorded and didn't know that there was a significant outtake at that time. Dare Me (1985) by The Pointer Sisters= uptempo record. Shannon (1976) by Henry Gross = long distance dedication.
I respect the Talent and Legacy of the versatile late great Casey Kasem who paved the way for Ryan Seacrest and Kix Brooks among others. However, it's highly ironic for him to be so deeply annoyed by a "Dog Dedication" when he netted a sweet chunk of change from Hanna Barbera in Syndication over the years with his Voiceover on behalf of a CARTOON "Dog." 🤬 "Scooby" anyway! Walt Rules! And so does "Snoopy!" And "Astro!" And "Pluto!"😂😉🎤🐶⚾️📻👨🚀👩🚀🛸🌚❤📺B.W.
@alphaomega4848 it's the very thing that caused the meltdown. The uptempo record Dare Me and the long distance dog dying dedication Shannon being played back to back. You can find the rant anywhere, but this is the very thing that made him angry.
It is badly done. It wasn't meant to be a smooth edit, I just happened to get the episode like I did with others for my own listening. Little did I realize back in 1985 that there would be an internet with RUclips and the kids and dogs thing would have been a major meltdown outtake. The uptempo record was Dare Me by The Pointer Sisters, which was on the charts, and the other record was a long distance dedication, Shannon by Henry Gross from 1976. I always tried to get rid of the talking between songs. Unlike having a ton of hard drive space and being able to store thousands of songs, an 1800 foot reel of tape at 7.5 inches per second would give 48 minutes of recording time per side.
I just hope Casey got to see those pictures Don was supposed to show him.

The full episode - September 14, 1985 - airs every few weeks on the classic “American Top 40” station on I Heart Radio.

It's been years since I've last seen a reel to reel tape player/recorder.
My mom ran a transcription service in NYC and had a reel-to-reel machine in-house. She could splice them together like a wizard when needed.
Beautiful isn't it? Not the greatest format in the world for some purposes, but oh so visual.
Snuggles was so excited to get the new Pointer Sisters album that he didn't look both way before crossing the busy street. Live and learn
Love kistebing to Kasey's top 40 countdown repeats from the 70's on Sirius weekends!
Is Don on the phone?
That's AT-40 producr Don Bustany, who was supposed to send Casey pictures of the musical acts so that he could figure out who their audience was.
Actually, Casey’s show was on WWSW, 94.5 in Pittsburgh, not 96.1
More recently is was on 3WS, but back in the 80s I remember it being on 96.1, WXKX.
I googled "Casey Kasen angry Walt dog", and it gave me the missing info. He didn't want to read a death letter right after an upbeat song was played, and he did get angry, was throwing f bombs, and told his people to use their brains to run things better.
Fuckin’ ponderous, man
Did Casey ever get those pictures. WHERE'S DON!?!
Actually, Casey said "Is Don on the phone?" It was Paul Anka who kept saying "Where's Joe?"
What's the reference?
Thank you. I've always wondered. 😹
RIP Mr. Kasem
Poor Snuggles. 🐶
Nah I think the dog’s name was Gangsta Spanky.
So what did I miss? What was the angry about? All I heard was a half-assed dedication
Ponderous!
What's the reference?
Without background or context, this clip is meaningless. We hear a song conclude and a dedication to a dog-lover somewhere, and that's it. Big whoop.

I always wondered what the goddamn uptempo record was all of these years! I don’t know why they keep doing it to me but goddamnit! 😂

Are we gestating yet another new meaning for an existing word? Ponderous = "slow and clumsy because of great weight."
whys it cut in the middle
He only heard what was broadcasted. The tirade was probably not broadcasted of course.
@@CaseyVan the calmed down version aired.
Because, as explained in the description, he stopped the recording and then restarted it, so missing the majority of the dedication.
