I played along with the removed bass track from a channel named "Bass". Thank you very much and may George Harrison rest in peace.

Johnny Lee's 1980 classic Lookin' For Love in the style of Paul Callas on the electric upright bass.
For The Wrong Reason incomplete recording.

Using the Tascam MSR 16 for the recording. It's really interesting to hear the incomplete version of the song. Since this particular mix, I resang it, added some vocal sound effects, added additional guitar and more drums. There may be more, but this was done almost a year ago. Enjoy.

Our dog Chewie passed away on April 6, 2019 suddenly. He wasn't feeling great, but certainly didn't expect that his end would have happened as a result of a seizure. He never had a seizure before and this one just took its toll on him. I was just doing this on March 15 knowing how sick he was from other things that we were treating. He seemed to be getting better and next thing we knew he was g...

Very Last Day Tascam MSR 16

This is a video of me playing all of the parts on the Peter, Paul, and Mary song Very Last Day on my newly acquired Tascam MSR-16 16 track reel to reel deck. It's not perfect, but it does give me an idea of how to record. Great sound quality, difficult to do myself. Hope you all enjoy it.
Carry On Wayward Son Upright Electric Bass
Просмотров 2496 лет назад
Hi, my name is Paul Callas. I'm playing a version of Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas on an upright Electric Bass. It's a lot harder than I thought it was going to be, but for my first attempt on it, it's ok. I've been playing it on the electric for years, but this brings a whole new meaning to it. It's out of tune slightly and excuse the TV being on in the background as well. I hope you enjoy.

Great to see you playing right in front of the camera.
@@craigbrelsford thank you!
What make/ model is that bass?
@@bigbadbillb It's a 1986 Westone Rail. I've had it since 1987.
Poor Snuggles. 🐶
looking and sounding good, Paul
@craigbrelsford thank you Craig.
That was great, Paul!
Thank you.
Fuckin’ ponderous, man
BS I can hear the edit (badly done)
It is badly done. It wasn't meant to be a smooth edit, I just happened to get the episode like I did with others for my own listening. Little did I realize back in 1985 that there would be an internet with RUclips and the kids and dogs thing would have been a major meltdown outtake. The uptempo record was Dare Me by The Pointer Sisters, which was on the charts, and the other record was a long distance dedication, Shannon by Henry Gross from 1976. I always tried to get rid of the talking between songs. Unlike having a ton of hard drive space and being able to store thousands of songs, an 1800 foot reel of tape at 7.5 inches per second would give 48 minutes of recording time per side.
Did Casey ever get those pictures. WHERE'S DON!?!
Your a legends
Cool and happening ♦️
Gran paisaje saludos siempre 👍🐟🎸🎵🎶👉🌛🌹🤟😇🤗🤟🎧🎼👌
overlooked band
A great song by a great and underappreciated band. They were seriously nice guys who always had time for their fans.
A request and dedication for a recently deceased dog following THIS MUCH of an UPTEMPO TRACK ? They made him follow THE POINTER SISTERS?!? F@#k man I’d F@&kin blow my G@#$AMN stack and lose my F$&KIN SH!T
Actually, Casey’s show was on WWSW, 94.5 in Pittsburgh, not 96.1
More recently is was on 3WS, but back in the 80s I remember it being on 96.1, WXKX.
This makes me wanna talk about a dead dog.
👍
Thank you for that eleven seconds. I went their when I was very young.
One of my favorite places in the world. Thank you for checking it out.
You are most welcome ~ My pleasure.
Thank you. I've always wondered. 😹 RIP Mr. Kasem
Why this band has so few views on youtube? I bought a LP of this band and I'm amazed at what I'm hearing
I think I speak for everyone when I say we've all had co-workers who wouldn't hesistate to transition us from an up-tempo sweep into a god-d**m death dedication about a f**king dog dying.
That Casey meltdown was so funny, I hope him and Snuggles the 'f*cking godd*mn dog' are listening to Dare Me and other godd*mn uptempo records in the afterlife.
Thanks for closing the loop on this!
Is Don on the phone?
That's AT-40 producr Don Bustany, who was supposed to send Casey pictures of the musical acts so that he could figure out who their audience was.
It’s not right, it’s UPRIGHT! 😂 One of my favorites, Paul. Very nice!
The full episode - September 14, 1985 - airs every few weeks on the classic “American Top 40” station on I Heart Radio.
One of my favourites 👍
It's been years since I've last seen a reel to reel tape player/recorder.
My mom ran a transcription service in NYC and had a reel-to-reel machine in-house. She could splice them together like a wizard when needed.
Beautiful isn't it? Not the greatest format in the world for some purposes, but oh so visual.
Hahaha thank you for this!! It’s f****n PONDEROUS!!
A great Stanky song!!
This video is fucking ponderous man! But in a good way... 😁 🐶
Are we gestating yet another new meaning for an existing word? Ponderous = "slow and clumsy because of great weight."
Love you!
Great stuff! Have you tried using VHS tape on it? I wonder about using 1/2" 16tr 16ch tape heads and part of a VCR tape transport, wired up to a cassette deck somehow. That would be amazing!
I tried it and I figured it wouldn't hurt anything. It did record, but the levels were extremely low on playback. You need the correct tape formulation to get optimum performance on this. A six hour VHS tape gave you roughly 11 minutes of record time at 15 ips. The tape transport is just a little too rough on the VHS tape, too. This is a fantastic sounding deck.
@@pcallas66 Does the tape formulation and thickness of tape, etc, relate to how much juice needs to be provided to the heads? If so, does that mean that the reel-to-reel is providing less juice to the heads than a cassette deck does and that's why the levels were low? 11mins isn't long, but as VHS tapes can be found for quite cheap (especially when purchased in bulk), it's still seems worthwhile, although a 7.5ips option could be good for longer recording times. And yeah, I thought the reel-to-reel transport might be to rough for the relatively thin VHS tape. Which is why I really want to try this with the 1/2" 16tr 16ch heads and part of the VCR transport, wired up to a cassette deck. I'm just not sure what kinda power the heads would require for recording to VHS tape, or if those reel-to-reel heads would be most appropriate, or would some customised 1/2" 16tr 16ch heads be better?
@@pcallas66 Apart from part of the VCR tape transport, it may need to be built from scratch pretty much. It's strange that nobody has built and released such a machine, because it could make quality tape recording very accessible. I don't think it's because it wouldn't work. It's probably more about where collective companies decided to take the technology, knowing that it would eventually be almost completely replaced by digital recording technology. And VHS did come along nearer the end of analog audio/video dominance.
@@Kyle-sg4rm I think the real trick is the biasing of the tape, and being this is only a two head machine, it would be very tricky to get it right because there's no playback reference as it's recording. If one would know how to do it, they could probably set it up to get the maximum signal on these tapes. The thing is I think at 7.5 ips, the frequency response is like 40 to 16 KHz and at 15 ips it's like 40 to 20 KHz, and the machine is set up for Ampex 456 tape from the factory. I'm not sure how the frequency response would be on the VHS tape once it would be set for maximum bias signal and if the signal would even be good enough to record with. Thank you for listening though. Bought this machine broken two years ago and I know how to repair some things on them, and lucky for me, it wasn't an expensive fix. There is actually another digital format (ADAT) that would use the SVHS tape and uses 8 tracks on an SVHS tape. I believe it's about 40 minutes of record time and the sound quality is fantastic. You can also gang more than one machine together and have them utilize smpte time code and you can put as many machines together and get up to 128 tracks (I'm not going to do the math, but I think you can put 16 machines together to achieve that). Anyway, as far as wiring it up to a cassette deck, you would only get two tracks, and it would only utilize 1/8 of the tape that you're trying to record on (I may be missing something here though). Incidentally, the track width on these tapes is the same track width of a cassette tape, except the tape is much thicker and has a nice transport system with dbx noise reduction. As you can hear, the sound quality is very good on this, but I made some other original recordings with this deck, too and you can find them on youtube as well. Anyway, have a great evening and I hope you find what you're looking for.
These guys are from England and who gives a shit

The best song by the best vocal band ever!! Only Glen could do it, it's proper justice.
A very powerful song
Chewie passed away Saturday, April 6, 2019. I'm so sad right now.
So sorry for your loss, Paul. Nothing is harder. You gave him a great life. May he Rest In Peace.
Thank you. This was so hard to see him going through some of the things he went through the last three months. We certainly didn't think it was going to end his life, but sometimes you just don't know.
Paul Callas that’s the truth, Paul. You really just never know. Joel and I have a 15 year old kitty named Freddie. We took him in as a stray about 12 years ago. Every time anything is wrong with him, we live in fear of the same thing. He was extremely sick two years ago, and I’m always afraid of the same happening again. Praying for peace for you guys. It’s a definite struggle, and such a great loss. ❤️
❤️❤️
What's the best way to record on these things? through the Aux imputs or through the Mic Inputs in the front?
Through the line inputs would be ideal. The microphone inputs would be ok for voice recording, but the microphone preamps aren't as good as one you'd find on a mixing console. I grabbed this snippet from a CD by going from the cd player output and going into the tape deck. However, you're only picking up the audio from my phone microphone. That tape deck is 50 years old now and works great. The sound quality is fantastic.
@@pcallas66 Ok cool! thanks. Yeah I just got one for $60 from craigslist. Was nervous but everything works except for the number counter. What I'm trying to do is record songs I made from my computer onto the reel to reel and then send the recorded version on the reel to reel back into my computer as the master track. For the line inputs do the take RCA cables? This is what I need and I'm wondering if this will work.....www.guitarcenter.com/Livewire/1-4F-RCAM-Dual-Y-Cable.gc
@@joed7185 You could just get a 3.5 mm male stereo plug to RCA male cable as well. Depending on your tape deck, you can make phenomenal recordings, especially at 7.5 inches per second. When you record, make sure you use a Q tip with alcohol to clean the heads every time you change a tape, and make sure you clean the guides in the transport, as well as the capstan and pinch roller. I hope this helps.
@@pcallas66 ok cool! yeah I'm running my computer to an audio interface then to the reel to reel. Either on will work correct?
@@joed7185 As long as you have a good signal. The key is to watch the levels going into the deck. Tape is more forgiving of a hot input signal. Just don't overdrive the record amps. The best thing is to have your VU meters hitting 0 dB for your average signal and your peaks not to go over +3 dB. You'll get great results.
Interesting choice of music.Nice ;)
Bravo to you for using the variac on this amazing piece of equipment. I too have had such results with machines that have been idle for years. If the original electrolitics can come up and work properly, you can hear the magnificent sound the way the designer intended.
