INSTALLING ROUND CORNER BEAD
Overview:
In the past, many homes were constructed using square corners. Although this is a nice look, in recent home construction round corner bead has become a popular alternative. In this section, the installation of round corner bead over the top of squared corner bead will be demonstrated.
In order to install round corner bead there are several materials and tools that will be needed.
Materials Needed:
The materials needed are: the new style round corner bead, and 45-minute drywall mud.
Tools Needed:
The tools needed are: a 6-inch and a 12-inch taping knife, a wet rag, and a drywall utility knife.
The Repair:
First, size and cut the new corner bead to fit the area to be installed. Be sure to mix enough drywall mud to adhere the corner bead to the corner of the wall and cover the first coat. Next, heavily coat the entire length of the corner about three inches in with the 6-inch taping knife. This will act as an adhesive to the new corner bead and cause it to stick permanently to the wall. Employing this technique renders the removal of the older corner unnecessary.
Now take the new corner bead and place it onto the drywall mud on the corner of the wall. Take the knife and run it down the length of the new corner bead, pressing and pushing it into the drywall mud. This will cause the new corner bead to adhere to the original wall.
Now, with the 6-inch taping knife, take more drywall mud and apply it to the outside of the corner bead, covering it completely. Do this the entire length of the new corner bead. Keep scraping and applying the mud lengthways feathering and filling in the gap between the wall and the new corner bead. This step is very important. The new corner bead will stick out about half an inch from the old wall, so it is imperative that the old wall is brought out to the height of the new corner bead.
After the drywall has dried, which usually takes about 45 minutes, apply more drywall mud to the wall, continually pressing, smoothing, and scraping. Be sure to keep scraping the rounded edge of the corner bead so that it remains round and does not become jagged. Scrape horizontally over the entire length of the wall, ensuring that the wall is even and one part is not thicker than another.
