I acknowledge that myself. I had straight/wavy hair extensions that matched my hair texture. After taking them out at month 6 I had to get the matted hair out. It took me TWO days to do that by self. I knew at that point I felt 1/4 struggle of what blk women/women with coarse texture feel on the daily 💀. Mad respect.

I grew out locs for almost 3 years(the only time my hair actually grew out of my mini fro), and surprisingly when I cut it all off and pondered the negativity of what happens if I hate it and it doesn't grow back the same, it ended up being one of the best decisions I ever made. My scalp is so free and and light and I'm learning to love and take care of my crown in an entirely new way. Def getting my locs back in the future but rn I'm loving this short hair phase and it's insane because it's already grown back so much in the last month or two I actually want the cut it again like wtf! 😍

As a white person videos like this are so interesting. For probably most people with my hair type (straight/wavy depending on various factors), hair is only rarely a communal thing, especially in adulthood. But just like you took a long time taking those braids out and had help doing it, I'm guessing braiding them took at least just as long and you did not do it all yourself
I'm guessing this helps build a unique culture and community feel around hair
I know not every Black person will wear braids, but many do or they might have another style that takes work/help. There's just so much that's different. It's not my culture and that's okay. I just think it's interesting/cool!

Interesting take-yes hair in BIG in the community. Historically, it was/is a time when stories were shared and bonds built. I promise this style probably took 8 hours if done by a stylist or 12 if she did it herself.

Hair braiding, twisting, locking, sewing, and straightening is a big deal in our community because it takes a long time to do, has roots in religion & tradition, and has been used to create maps to get out slave states.

These videos have created such a huge understanding when it came to hair care for natural curly curly hair. I knew it was high maintenance, but I never knew it was this much high maintenance. Mad respect, and truly understand the pain, and why they don’t want to get their hair wet (never understood that prior). Like, mad respect. I can brush my hair and I’ll look like a poodle (my curly hair just blows up), but Incan decide not to brush my hair and just put an ugly bun in and it just fine, or if I don’t do anything it’s okay too. But this is different, you have to do something with it, to make it at least look ‘ok’, and than it comes to a point, you already put so much time into it that just ‘ok’ is not okay anymore, it has to be decent, perfect, presentable. Again, this videos created mad respect and understanding for me.

The trick is to section them into four equal parts and only do one section at a time and detangle as you go. Also put the hair that’s been taken out back into a section so it doesn’t get in the way

The way I been taking down my
daughter’s braids is use a spray bottle with warm ish/hot ish water mixed with like 5 pumps of conditioner. It still takes me like 4 hours for real. But it’s much smoother of a process

Honestly you're better than me😭. It most times takes 2-3 days to completely finish. This summer, I pushed myself and binged the last two Lord of the Rings movies while pulling them out. Bear in mind I had started the day before and I had already cut them. The only advantage was that I was using a comb so good on you for finishing so quickly.
