I miss comedy like this in England, I grew up watching Alf Garnet and Winston got the better of him time and time again, it was funny warm banter, which is the British way, well at least it used to be.
I wholeheartedly agree. However, a great many NFers used this humour to bash people for real. Turmed slot of people off and gave others the excuse to be righteous about it.
Bravo Sir! I was so proud to see a young Black man, have the maturity and intelligence to actually understand what has always been known as British Humour! So much so, I subscribed. BTW, here's another to look up. Love Thy Neighbour! These programmes were British Families Saturday Night Entertainment, from Grandparents to Grandchildren. We would all sit around together watching these shows.
Alf Garnet was a lesson in the idiocy of bigots, and the bigotry of idiots. Unfortunately, some of the idiots saw him as someone airing their beliefs, "at last". It got to Warren Mitchell in the end, that there were still people who didn't get it.
Top man its is good to know that people from over the pond appreciate it is just banter from that time keep em coming and thank you there should be a lot more thinking like you.
Brilliant Sean, it's such a shame that things have changed now as we all have to think before we speak, back then it was so much better with everyone understanding that it was just small talk on both sides and laughed at it, take care mate 🍻🙏🙏🙏
Loved watching Alf Garnett back in the 80s and Eamon Walker as Winston was fantastic!!! Loved Marigolds character, especially when he would flit between talking Cockney then proper Jamaican lol.
You may also appreciate Love thy Neighbour and Rising Damp. Two more British sitcoms, which are contemporaries of In Sickness and In Health and have a similar race relation dynamic between two characters.
The thing that really matters in comedy is is something funny. And this is. The two actors are really great.. and you can see the chemistry between the two of them. They bounce off each other… I like that the characters like each other..despite driving each other crazy… that makes it work.
Miss days when u could joke about with people my good friend of 90s was Jamaica I am white British and we never called each other bye our real names he called me white star and I called him back star when we meet up .we went our separate ways as we got older but memories stay with me all my life imagine nowadays me shouting across street his name I called him I be arrested or end up in fight because young people today have been brainwashed online bye media organisations that colour makes us different it don’t we all bleed same we all breath same we all have same insides and we can al die same illnesses hate is bread into people in all different ways I couldn’t give dam what race you are colour you are what you believe in what you eat as long as your nice person your my friend 👍👍👍👍 peace to you all
He would also make jokes about Jews too, in real life he was Jewish. Sasha Baron Cohan did the same type of irony through his characters Ali G and Borat.
You have it totally got it. It is showing how stupid racism is. I love the way he says things but not sure whether he's talking about being black or gay. If you listen carefully. That was the point. You might enjoy Father Ted: Father are you a racist now. They mention Greeks. I'm Greek British & I found it funny.
Most good humour is best on reality. And that includes that character 'Alf Garnett'. There really were men like Alf in England and probably the rest of the UK; and without doubt still are. This series was made in the 1980s; with the the original 'Till Death us do Part' from about 1965 -75. Even as late as the 1980s, racism was still out in the open in the UK. When you understand the context in which the programme was made, and how people like Alf were being mocked, you can see how really funny it is. Having said that, we live in different times, and I don't think the BBC who made this series will ever show it again.
Alf was so nuanced. First when racists used to talk to the actor, he made it very clear the programme was laughing AT the racists, not with them. Secondly, they used to use these arguments to give nudges towards black history. Thirdly he represented the fears of the everyman in the 80s that saw their country change completely in less than a generation. Its brilliantly clever.
Just discovered your channel and seen a few reactions such as Peter Kay and this. Really enjoyed your reactions and your personality. Subscribed and gonna check more of your stuff. Top guy.
The uk had such good comedy years and years we had so many white older actors helping the black actors. And it worked so well. Rising damp. Love thy neighbour. porridge. Game on.
First time seeing your channel, subscribed because you are likeable. Do more comedy like this.....you have a great attitude to jokes and humour...but happy to hear you say that THERE IS a line....perfect.
Laughed my butt of as a kid at Alf in the 70s n 80s and he was always shown up as the bigot he was so funny. the ironic thing is Warren Mitchel the actor was a Russian Jew or his parents were. R.I.P funny man it such a shame that back in the 80s n 90s the pc left shut all this humour down . We cant laugh at each other now it seem without someone taking offence, as a result we are all walking around in eggshells . Thanks for posting Sean, you may want to look at, It aint half hot mum .
It was actually deeper than just joking. The actor who played Alf, Warren Mitchell, was a very good actor. He was a Jew and he used Alf to ridicule all the stereotypes and absurdity that exists. It made us understand how stupid prejudice is. It made us look at ourselves and our own beliefs. Alf was always the fool, always mocked for the things he said. It showed people who held his views just how silly they were. The people who hold those views haven't gone away, they have grown in power. What has gone away is our ability to mock them in the way that these old shows did.
Some of the things make you cringe, but back then it was said, and it is funny. Whites as honkys and blacks as cannot repeat, as people are very touchy.
This is the most anti-racial comedy you'll get. Having a black gay man as his carer blew his bigoted brains out. The joke was on him. Excellent performance by all actors here. Sadly, it won't pass these days.
A fantastic piece of writing from Johnny Speight whose racist father was the inspiration for Alf Garnett. This was satire of the highest order and sadly we will never get to see this on TV again because of the woke morons who commission TV now who don't understand that the show was ridiculing the attitudes of people like Alf. The character was anti-Semitic despite Warren Mitchell, the actor who played Alf being Jewish.
Thank you for laughing at a whole load of bigoted nonsense. Warren Mitchell would understand and shake your hand. He was Jewish and knew racism. He was disappointed that he actually liked Winston.
alf garnet was a funny , but racist people used to quote alf, often saying''alf garnets got it right' totally missing the point that the joke was always on alf,
When the world loses it's sense of humour, all that will be left is hate.
Sean, you're a breath of fresh air. Well spoken
I miss comedy like this in England, I grew up watching Alf Garnet and Winston got the better of him time and time again, it was funny warm banter, which is the British way, well at least it used to be.
Well said

Winston is played by Eamonn Walker. He played Fire Chief Boden in Chicago Fire and prisoner Akem in Oz.
Alf Garnet was a lesson in the idiocy of bigots, and the bigotry of idiots.
Unfortunately, some of the idiots saw him as someone airing their beliefs, "at last".
It got to Warren Mitchell in the end, that there were still people who didn't get it.
no they never. why you lying for?
He was a legend
exactly, idiots used to quote alf, thats why warren mitchell stopped doing it,
Imagine a World were we could all sit and laugh at Alf, Winston and each other 😁
Top man its is good to know that people from over the pond appreciate it is just banter from that time keep em coming and thank you there should be a lot more thinking like you.
And now Winston is the big boss in Chicago Fire.
This is how we dealt with those kind of topics in the UK.
Brilliant Sean, it's such a shame that things have changed now as we all have to think before we speak, back then it was so much better with everyone understanding that it was just small talk on both sides and laughed at it, take care mate 🍻🙏🙏🙏
You can tell Alf winds Winston up; but loves him really lol!
Loved watching Alf Garnett back in the 80s and Eamon Walker as Winston was fantastic!!! Loved Marigolds character, especially when he would flit between talking Cockney then proper Jamaican lol.

So bittersweet this program.

i wish everyone had your same opinion and remember the joke is allways on alf ,very clever writers
Till death do us part and love thy neighbour was good British comedy back in the day should give them a watch
Well said pity more people don't have the same opinion

I like the way Alf is shown to be the ignorant one with his bad grammar and a reference to tigers living in Africa...and other things.
He would also make jokes about Jews too, in real life he was Jewish. Sasha Baron Cohan did the same type of irony through his characters Ali G and Borat.
How many people realize Marigold is now the Chief in Chicagofire
UK 🇬🇧 Resident here DeSanctimonius would be loving this!!!
Watch the comedy from the 70s love Thy neighbour it’s mainly the same thing
Oh amen ✌️
Actor who played Winston wS in tears of the sun
Well said old boy..
Spot on sean
This is why people are Superior...
Both of one of them is Human.... 🥰
That was a blast from the past sean funny but taking the pee out of alf showing his ignorance the writer of that sitcom nailed it on the head

These shows are an awesome parody on our ignorance.

Well said lad, this TV Show was actually taking the piss out of Racists 😂
Sadly the NF didn't get that.
Sean look up love thy neighbour tv episode lol 😆🤣 😂
It was never ment to be racist
Your view is exactly how the show was meant to be. It was a stab at bigotry
Some of the things make you cringe, but back then it was said, and it is funny. Whites as honkys and blacks as cannot repeat, as people are very touchy.
Wogs was the main one in London.

love thy neibour is just as funny about a racist living next door to a black guy .
