Alf was played by a very 'aware' actor, Warren Mitchel, and it challenged racism in a way that suited the times. It looks a bit clumsy by today's standards but it was quite effective, back in the day. This series was a mixture of laugh out loud gags and a pathos that could bring a tear to your eye. Alf was an old man whose entire world was changing, he no longer recognised or understood society and the loss of his wife left him alone and unable to cope.
I think it's more honest, I have been watching Love Thy Neighbour...it's hilarious and they both poke fun out of racism to each other...Toast of London/ Tinseltown are hilarious too. You can get episodes on RUclips xxx
As a caribbean family we all watched this program and Love Thy Neighbour. Brilliant in those days depicted what people of colour really thought of each other, blatant honesty! At least we all knew where we stood. Were far to politically correct nowadays. We take the piss out of each other irrespective of race, colour, creed, gender or shades, we ought to be able laugh and see the harmless humour without taking offence. Look at some of the great comedians out there....
Warren Mitchell, although describing himself as atheist, was Jewish and a member of the British Humanist Association. His Alf Garnett character was layered with irony.
What amazes me is the huge affinity you have with British humour. I guess it must be that, as a Canadian, you are more connected with it somehow. Most Americans do not understand it or get the jokes when they do.
Hi Sean, your review of Alf Garnett was so refreshing to watch. I grew up watching shows like Alf Garnett, love thy neighbour, Fawlty towers, and only fools and horses, and love them all. I agree with you this is just comedy, and good comedy, it is a shame everything now is so PC, and people have turned into snowflakes, and are so easily offended. My father taught me that never pull fun at anyone, until you can pull fun and laugh at yourself first. Alf Garnett was a brilliant actor, and very talented, and as Alf in many of the sketches he played the part of a racist bigot, but he was the one who always ended up looking stupid, and this was the purpose of his character, to show that racism was not acceptable. My favorite Alf Garnett sketch is about a TV repair, love to see a review from you on this one. Keep doing what you are doing, just great, and so refreshing. Best wishes to you.
Actually Sean, the show was not anti PC. It was, in it's day, pro PC. It mocked and ridiculed racism and racists as personified by Alf Garnett. He was always made to look the fool. Indirect criticism, this was the 70's. The start of the PC era. This was a time of changing attitudes on the UK. Something that never really happened in America. America is still trying to give birth to itself and it's a difficult labour.
I'm an old fart, as was the character Warren Mitchell played so well. Your reactions are always even handed and understanding. I try to absorb some of that equinamity from you. Please carry on doing what you do so well.
Alf was very clever. He was highlighting the "wrongs" of racism. As a comedy show it worked but in real life the racism didn't. But I do agree with you, being politically correct has taken away the comedic value. I'm Irish and I miss the Irish skits, they were funny and, sometimes, relatable.
Fair game to you ... You have to laugh at yourself and laughter is a natural endorphin ... They where all great friends...it's just a bit of Banta... Without humour we would all be worthless sheep.
I'm as lefty as they come but I tend to agree regarding the loss of non-pc comedy like this, people like this existed and they all gave as good as they got. I take you've seen the original Love Thy Neighbour series, I made a full playlist of every episode you can find pretty easy if you wanted.
Sean, you're a braver man than me lol! We couldn't possibly have anything like this on tv now BUT I get your point, well done. On a side point, I've nevr seen another channel cover any of this old shit....well done fella
You summed it up perfectly, nailed it , you only need to see the black and the aisian actor happy to take on their roles just for a laugh . If most of The world saw things like you do man we would all be happier. Word👊🏼
Hey pal you hit the nail on the head mate that's the problem with comedy to people have lost the enjoyment of comedy they take thing's to seriously and not as comedy another good one waiting for God and love they neighbour the movie they are funny
Alf Garnett is a parody of racist old english guys...some people did not get they joke they thought it was promoting ignorance and racism, it was the opposite, it shows the BS at the foundation of racism, in fact I think the guy that played Garnett was Jewish (I forget his name and I'm at work and too lazy to check hahaha) basically I think the message was : old bitter fuckers are a source of a lot of that shit. I personally think it was genius social commentary
Im happy to see an American who understands a sense of humour, it puzzles me when some people scream and shout about the racist language in his clip, yet they except someone knifing a person, or beating a person up. Im not offended when people use name calling at myself, I just laugh at their comment and go back at them with a sarcastic comment about them, and you can see the steam rising off them, completely stumped they are. Keep your sense of humour Sean, all the best.
Sent you a lovely comment and RUclips deleted it...try Love Thy Neighbour...it's hilarious. Godbless you and everyone here..big love, Irish in England lol..X💚☘️ps you have such positive energy you shine through the screen. Big love ❤️
Warren Mitchell who played Alf Garnett used comedy and the character Alf to ridicule racism. He was a member of the Humane society and very much for social change. I can confirm that there are still a few real life Alf Garnetts in society.
btw marigold guy, sorry cant remember his name is in us chicago fire series, think hes the fire chief there.he was in u.s oz series too, very good actor.
Alf Garnett, Dad's Army and 'Allo 'Allo will never be seen again in these silly politically correct times. That clip brought me back to my childhood, thanks.
Love your arrirude, clearly you paid no attention to the PC bridgades memo about how you should be highly offended by Alf Garnett, etc, though sometimes he did take it a little too close to the edge of been blatant racist.. But like how relaxed you are over this clip and can laugh and enjoy it too, you totally get it!! And Alf Garnett did take a lot of funny abuse back too, which kind of leveled things up. Ironically it was working class Labour supporters who loved watching Alf Garnett the most despite how he was always slagging off the Labour party. In fact Tony Booth who played Alf Garnett's Labour supporting son-in-law was in real life Labour PM Tony Blair's father-in-law, Blair married his daughter Cherie Booth. Funny how things work out.
You not what if it wasn't so funny, if this was my wife who had passed in a real Life I'd be on a murder charge, your right that's pc for comedy's not aloud anymore ☹️
It was more than comedy. It was holding a mirror up to our own stupidities. We were laughing at ourselves, and learning about our faults. It worked better than being preached to. All banned now, and the worse for it. But the real offensive stuff was banned then.

all we do here in uk is take piss out of each other...its banter...thats how we are. nothin is serious (tho nowadays u cant say nothin, everrrryyyone gets offended by everythin, its weak, pathetic)
Your anti PC attitude towards this clip is so refreshing in these days. It was a very popular show at the time and still has validity in spite of all the dreadful racism that’s around now. If you can find any clips from ‘Desmond’s’ a comedy about a barbershop in London I think you’d enjoy it.
Oh such happy memories. Today's Woke's & do gooder's just wouldn't let it happen now. You should check out Curry & Chips with Spike Milligan & Eric Sykes.

What amazes me is the huge affinity you have with British humour. I guess it must be that, as a Canadian, you are more connected with it somehow. Most Americans do not understand it or get the jokes when they do.
But American comedy is just not funny, the only remotely humorous thing they have ever made is Sg.Bilko which was years ago
@@martinpowell5769 South Park? I find that genius!
Well said Sean, tell this to all these protesters on the streets of the U.K. now 🙏🙏

" Sabu " was a very popular young Indian actor in British movies in the 40s and 50s.
Its sad how the world has gone. Enjoying your video clips. And your laugh cracks me up. Keep up with your good work. 👌
Classic British tv where everyone took the piss out of each other 🤣 it used to be like that in the work place 🤣🇬🇧
The guy who plays the shop keeper is very good in this.
If we can’t laugh at yourself we’re doomed. Love the vid!
It's still funny 😄cos they all go in in each other...
Oh a time when everybody made fun of everyone, there was actually more inclusiveness then than there is now....That's progression for you....
Your great explanation is why I love your channel Sean.
