Bruces "No Cal" profile rubber powered free flight P-39 Airacobra

  • All Bruces models fly well but I couldn't believe this was it's first outing - it went so well. Weighing in at under 4 grams it's a lightweight work of art. Bruce prints the tissue on his computers ink jet printer.

    Wow! As a kid who briefly played with wind up airplanes, never in my wildest imagination would I have believed one could fly so long and so well. I guess that is the difference between building it, and perfecting it. Well done Bruce. Your plane building skills blew my mind.

      It's amazing really but all his models fly well. That is skill and a lifetimes experience. I will try to video a few more of his creations.

      @@ltwakeatmsndotcom It is hard to see that there is a balsa stick or tube running from the nose of the airplane to the tail. It is obscured by the motor. It is the backbone of the model, able to withstand the pressure of the wound motor.
      Do a search for no cal, or no-cal, or nocal, flying models and you'll see other examples.

    What amazes me is how well this gentleman has calibrated his windings and his turn radius to fit exactly in the space he has to fly!!

    Certainly more elegant than the 50cc monsters we fly in our club. I love that our hobby has such variety. Lovely plane Bruce!

      Definitely LOL. I am always amazed that free flight videos like this get exponentially more views than RC and FPV stuff!! Bruce doesn't do the internet so I have explained to him that he is a star and shown him the video.

      @@Del350K4 The interesting thing is that these very lightweight models just seem to bounce off obstacles!! It's quite rare that they get seriously damaged.

    Great design and build. I would make the building attempts, but few people have such a place to fly the result.
    I don't think kits are still available.

      Yes, it was a homebuild from a plan. We are lucky to have a large hall to fly every Saturday in the winter

    A few days ago me and my brother were talking about how in the 60s you could buy these balsa wood gliders. I think 15 cents got you a basic glider 20 cents got you a rubber band prop, and 29 cents added landing gears. Personally, I liked the little guys on parachutes and I only wish plastic garbage bags had existed then to make replacement parachutes.

      Yes I remember them well. I used to fly them at school. Bruce's models probably weigh less than those all balsa models.

      @@alanpaul1234 As kids we bought gliders, parachute men, and kites despite our backyard having trees that liked to eat them. There was just enough open space to convince us we could get away with it.

      Amazon now sells a "kit" which has to balsa wood gliders and two rubber powered balsa wood plane, almost exactly like those we bought back in the early 1960's for 25 cents, only now the kit of 4 goes for $24.00!

    Amazing. Any tips for a beginner? My planes just dive straight into the ground..or fly erraticallyup down like yoyo (and then dive into ground) and flights last about 3 seconds no matter what trimmings i try..or maybe recommend a book i can read to improve?

      I'm not sure about books but there is plenty of stuff on the internet search for trimming indoor planes. Adding a bit of nose weight often helps in getting planes to fly better, so may be worth trying. Good luck.
