    Investment banking refers to a financial sector that facilitates the creation of capital for companies, governments, and other entities. This involves services like underwriting, mergers and acquisitions, securities trading, and offering financial advice. Investment banks help organizations raise funds through issuing stocks or bonds and also provide strategic guidance for corporate activities. These institutions play a pivotal role in the global financial ecosystem by connecting investors with opportunities and assisting businesses in achieving their financial objectives.

      Gaining insight from experienced investors who have navigated challenges and emerged successfully is truly motivating. While a shift from positive to negative returns in your portfolio can be unnerving, it's important to remember that maintaining faith in solid investments and continuing to contribute can lead to favorable outcomes. If your investments are in strong companies, adhering to your strategy and consistently building upon your positions is key.

After watching this I think there are people out there, on the extreme, who plan to die early just to be able to retire early. Its an old guard institution wrought corruption and extortive regulation. Basically it's how politicians can line their pockets and exert power and influence over companies.

      @@ronnie4661 I can only speak as someone involved tangentially (Private Equity) with a lot of IB analyst friends. Most of it is putting together deals. So while the underwriting part is correct, another big part is advising companies on whether to merge or acquire another company, change their capital structure, raise new money ect. So advisory and underwriting both rake in the cash, as well as the creation of instruments (so they will create a new way to invest, for a fee of course).
      The day to day is mainly a) excel spreadsheets of valuations and data b) reading copius amounts of documents to verify numbers and try and estimate future numbers c) making slide shows that look really fancy and can convince clients of your teams professionalism and work and d) having many meeting with clients and other teams.
      As far as a salary, in the US you can expect >100k a year, with far higher amounts for the big 9 (bulge bracket - the largest global firms) or elite boutiques (like Rothchild & Co.). A lot of the money comes from the bonus. As you move up the ranks, it becomes more and more client facing - with more responsibility to cultivate, maintain and bring in new business as well as signing off and taking responsibility for teams.

      Prety much - commercial banks make their money through taking on many lower risk investments, such as mortgages and other types of loans (they provide a service to the whole population). Investment banks make large amounts of money from a smaller amount of investments, but these investments are much higher risk and invlove much more money, and are typically associated with big corporate companies and businesses. So commercial banks make money through charging interest on the many loans they provide - investment banks make a lot of money through taking on less, high risk, big money investments.

  • @CSpottsGaming
    @CSpottsGaming 3 года назад +22

    I think your explanation of the 2008 financial crisis is mostly accurate but also misses some pretty key players. In particular it lets ratings agencies like Moody's and S&P off the hook for knowingly misrepresenting the quality of the mortgage backed securities that were being moved around.
    Mortgages weren't being bought and sold individually they were being packaged together and sold off in lots. Both those agencies and others had direct and substantial conflicts of interest. Namely, that if (as an example) JP Morgan came to Moody's and said "We want you to rate this MBS" and Moody's gave a poor rating, JP Morgan would just go to Standard and Poor's next time. While there was no spoken agreement to give good ratings, ratings agencies knew that they had to in order to continue to get business.
    In doing this it allowed worse and worse and worse mortgages to be underwritten. So yes, banks definitely played their part but this video implies they were more or less alone in being at fault. In reality there were a number of bad actors that contributed to the eventual collapse of that system.
