I was wondering what the channeled compartment /duel plugs are for perhaps adding water to the inside channel would make the boat even more stable? My friends old flat bottom 12 aluminum would leak fairly quickly would full up he put a wood floor in that would buy time. But the boat would become so stable at a certain level.
One last question. I have three sun dolphin sportman 8ft boat. With the ply board addition in front that you stand on. I saw you standing in video. While out in water with two people. With my son which is 18yrs old and me in front. Will boat still be stable? The american is so similar to the pro12. I want to be up higher to be able to stand or swivel around, two people ar time. Thanks pal for your response.
@@michaelbarnes7086 thanks for the question, yes you and your son will be able to fish fine from this Jon boat. Just keep in mind this is a smaller 12 ft Jon boat and it is not going to be as stable as a a 14 ft or 15 ft boat. If you do the swivel seats with two people sitting and fishing you should be fine, but with two people standing you will have to be careful, especially with those strong “send it home” hooksets. Lol.
So your the first person that did the upgrade to this boat like I would have done , the price is right about the only thing I don’t like is there is nothing but the sealed air in between the deck and hull for flotation, it would have been great if they had A-B flotation foam inside they would be unsinkable, and it would stiffen the hull up and make it much quieter, right now it’s a big drum chasing fish away , yea a square of plastic cutting board glued to that front trolling motor mount with some 5200 3-M marine seal will hold it on forever don’t need any screws , cool little boat would be great with a little outboard 🤔
Nice setup these boats are super easy to customize. I put a 15hp mercury on mine, it carries all my gear plus a passenger and I, approx 500lbs, about 18mph
@hooklinesinker8142 they run 60hp+ good luck these boats sit low in the water so it's not even like you can get away in the shallows bottomed out in 18" so they can catch you at some point
I had a 6 hp Johnson and the motor was good it got me to where I wanted to go so I decided to test out the boat so I got a 10 hp Chrysler so I thought it was a 10 hp untill I bought parts for it thats when I found out it is a 15 hp..my boat show that a 6 hp motor is the max size for the boat but the boat will hold a 15 hp lol
The battery I have is a 24 group size and I have used it for probably 6 hours at the most at one time and still had more than 50% left. If you go to a 27 group size you will get a longer run time. Also check out my newest video it covers a review of the trolling motor and battery. If you have more questions let me know. I hope this helps.
I bought one years ago on clearance from Walmart for less than $300. Sold it, would like it back now that I’ve seen your video. I’ve had boats up to 22 feet long but seems like when you get away from the basics, you lose!
I can send some measurements later today, when I get home but I just made cardboard templates from storage boxes and just kept trimming them down with a knife until I had the shape I wanted. Then I took the template and traced it onto the 1/2 plywood. After that I built braces and supports to make it a sturdy platform. If you like these videos please subscribe. Thank you
Kevin the front casting deck measured lengthwise on centerline is 53 in long, at its widest point of width is 36in. At the point where the rod holder cut outs are its is 31 1/4 in. The other curvatures and contours will need to be trimmed to size after measuring. Also the casting deck will need to have a 3 in support that rest on the second seat, that way it is flush with the front seat. Please let me know if you have anymore questions I’ll be glad to help, the casting deck really makes the boat 10 times better.

Scott barnes here in martinsville va. I made the decks as you did. Turned out perfect fit. Question? I bought the pedestals that are square at the bottom that I bolted to the platforms and had tubes that adjust up to 17in tall with plastics folding seats. Looks very similar to pro 120 bass boat. My question is, will the two seats sitting up high like the pro 120 still be stable with two adults fishing? In your opinion, is the American 12 as stable as the pro 120? Please give me your opinion and ideas. I can adjust the seats down to 7in high sitting all way up to 17in same as Pro 120. Hey thanks buddy. Make more videos
Scott, thanks for the question man, to be honest I have never seen or been or a pro 120 but from what I have seen from them in videos they are much more stable. They are 62” compared to 52” of the American 12. I would say give it a try it may work just fine or it may not be as stable as you would like. Also with two adults sitting down and fishing it is going to make it way more stable than 2 standing up and fishing. You can. Ith stand up but it gets shaky. I hope this helps man!
Jimmie, the Sun Dolphin website says 6 hp for an outboard. As far as trolling motor it says 40 lb thrust but I run a 55 on the front and works fine. Sometimes it is just finding what works, it’s like with anything else they lower the rating to minimize the risk of breaking something. Keep it Blue Collar Brother!!!
The rubber mats were ordered from Amazon please see the link in the description box, they are a little pricey but are super easy to clean if you plan on getting the boat muddy or dirty like I do on the river. I actually went a super cheap route and just used liquid nails to glue the mats to the wood, it holds ok but I would suggest a better adhesive for better results, but it does work. Please see my other videos about this build. Thanks for checking out the video.

I just bought 2 of these on clearance at Walmart for 165$ each...can you help with the dimensions and matting material? Or better yet do you sell these?
Lol, true the balance did play a big role, but overall the boat is pretty stable for a 12 footer, obviously not the most stable thing out there but definitely more stable than some aluminum ones that I have been on.
I wish I could answer this better but I don’t have a pelican and I’ve never been on one, but just by doing some comparisons between the two they seem very similar. I do like the floors in the pelican better, the sun Dolphin floors are a terrible design which makes it hard to stand on unless you have mods. As far as the stability I would guess they are probably too similar to tell a difference.
I noticed in your newer video of American 12 boat. You removed the platforms. Was the platform to unstable? I made front and rear platforms also. Yet haven't put in lake yet.
Hey Michael, that’s a good question, and to be honest it was only to save weight when loading and unloading. Actually I think that with the platform it is more stable even though the center of gravity is higher, I think it’s because it’s easier balance on.
Cool video and thanks, just have a question, what exactly is or are the advantages of the casting decks over just standing on the boats floor? Seems like you'd be less stable and more likely to fall in if you do lose your balance...
So the main advantage for me was having just a little bit more usable space to. I’ve around on while casting and just fishing because I stand up most of the time just like on a bass boat. For this boat just standing on the floor was a pain because the ribs in the floor honestly make it hard. I did make a compact floor that made it easier to stand on too instead of the full casting deck. Honestly the stability didn’t really change that much, you would think the balance point would change but I felt just as stable on the full deck. Hope this helps!
Michael one more time. Love the platform in front of boat. At the rear of boat. Could platform be made pretty easily that would cover the battery area and the seat area also. Basically same as you did in front to mimic the pro 120. In your opinion, will the american 12 be as stable as the pro 120? Being the American 12 is longer than pro 120. And only 10cm narrower than pro 120. The mods you did alone on your American 12 in price of plywood etc. Compared to pro120 price of 2100-2600.00. Is awesome in savings. I was studying your video. If the battery is in front. The rear battery compartment could with door be a live well?! Hey, thanks for your time in response.
Michael, yea you could definitely build a similar deck that covers the seat too. You could really build a deck that covers the entire boat if you wanted similar to how people do the Jon boat to bass boat builds it’s just all about the bracing. Honestly the sky is the limit as long as you have some building capabilities and the creativity. As far as making the rear section into a live well, I believe it could be done fairly easily and would hold water well. This would also add weight to the back of the boat to distribute the weight better. The way I run mine right now with the bulk of the weight up front it does sink down the front some. But yea it should be just as stable as the 120 because it is pretty stable in all of the configurations I run it. Even with the big casting deck up front I can stand all day and fish without issues. Yea you could save a lot of money by doing this build over buying a 120.
Did you use any kind of glue or adhesive on your cleat? I'm thinking about doing that and maybe some Scotty mounting blocks. But I'm afraid of the holding power in the plastic without any kind of adhesive. I'm thinking screws would eventually rip out.. your thoughts. Thank you in advance and keep the great videos coming!

Thanks for the comment, honestly I’ve never paddled this thing before, but I will definitely do a review very soon showing paddling this thing. I would assume it wouldn’t be very hard to paddle this boat on a pond, if you bought oars for it it would do very good on a river. Please hit that notification bell as I will post it in a few weeks, and I will be doing budget upgrades to this boat over the course of this summer. Great stability, light and easy to use on battery power all day long. Great work on those casting decks and floor boards, what kind of material is that bottom panel made from ?
Thanks Jeff, I had the idea for the casting decks a while back and I figured I would share it with everyone so hopefully others can do the same mod. For the floorboard material, it is kinda like a plexiglass or hard plastic material that I found in treadmill box, i guess it was part of the packaging. It was nothing I went out and bought so I wish I knew exactly what it was, you could do the same thing with a thiner plywood if you treat it properly so that it does deteriorate from the water.
It is definitely better than a kayak or canoe but it is still a small Jon boat. I do think it is more stable than some aluminum 10ft and 12 ft jon boats I have been on so I think the design and plastic may help it out some. Check out my stability test video on this it may give you some visuals as to how stable it actually is. Let’s just say I stand up and fish the whole time so it is good enough for that.
