    Video Transcript:
    Hi, and welcome back to the second video in this lesson series on how to draw the human figure.
    By the way, if you haven't watched the first video yet, I recommend that you do that right now and then come back to this one.
    To watch the first video, just click on the link below...
    Lesson #1: • Figure Drawing Lessons...
    Just as a quick recap, in the last video, we talked about the big reason why so many artists struggle with learning figure drawing.
    I told you about the story of my co-instructor Michael and how he really hurt his long term success by skipping over the fundamentals.
    And I also hinted at what I believe to be a big secret to your success in figure drawing... which is a structured step-by-step approach to learning that's designed to teach you a number of critical skills, each one building on the last.
    So in this video, we're going to dive deeper into this "structured approach" and I'm going to reveal the first ingredient in our figure drawing success formula.
    And that is...
    PROPORTION!
    Not surprisingly, proportion is one of the most important skill to develop. Until you really understand how to draw human proportion, you drawings will never look right.
    It's the core foundation that everything else we will learn will be based on.
    But for some reason, this is also the biggest sticking points for most beginners. But today, we're going to fix that!
    I'm going to show you a simple drawing exercise that will help you make sense of proportion and allow you to really lock in that knowledge and make it a part of you.
    Let's go over to the drawing table and get to it!
    So the key to this exercise to to construct a basic figure completely from scatch. By doing this, it's going to help you to understand the rules that governs how a human body is put together.
    And it's going to help embed all those rules of proportion into your mind and make it second nature.
    So let's begin.
    [SEE VIDEO FOR DETAILS]
    There you have it. We've just created our own human body from scratch, complete with it's own rules and measurements.
    Congratulation! You now know more about drawing human proportion than 90% of beginner artists.
    Now it's time to imprint what you just learned into your long term memory.
    Research studies have shown that when we are first exposed to new information (lectures, articles, tutorials), the vast majority of that knowledge slips out of your short term memory within the first 30 minutes.
    But there an easy way to remedy this problem and that's by employing a technique called, "Spaced Repetition"
    It's basically the idea that reviewing a piece of new information over a period of time will cement it into your mind and dramatically increase retention.
    So here's your homework for today:
    Immediately after watching this tutorial, take out a clean piece of paper and repeat the exercise we just did.
    Try remember as much on your own as you can. Even when you can't immediately recall something, try for a while.
    By putting in effort to remember rather than just passively referring back the the lesson, you'll actually make the information stick much deeper.
    And when you really can't remember, go ahead and refer back the this lesson.
    Then repeat this again 30 minutes later. Then one more time 1 hour later. And finally once more the next day.
    By doing this you will solidify everything you've learned and lock it into your long term memory.
    Oh and by the way, you can apply this concept to anything you learned for maximum effectiveness.
    Of course, there's a lot more to learn about human proportion, but this exercise should give you a nice head start.
    In tomorrow's lesson, we'll learn about how to apply perspective your figure to make it look more 3 dimensional and interesting.

    Step 1: Draw a line - 2:17
    Step 2: Find the midpoint (crotch) - 2:46
    Step 3: Divide top (top chest) - 3:08
    Step 4: Divide top (chin) - 3:24
    Step 5: Divide above mid (belly button) - 3:34
    Step 6: Divide bottom (knees) - 3:44
    Step 7: 1st quarter oval (head) - 5:23
    Step 8: Dot headlength topchest (nipple) - 5:40
    Step 9: Half chin & topchest with V (collar bone) - 6:18
    Step 10: Half collarbone and chin - 6:40
    Step 11: Intersect nipple to oval - 7:26
    Step 12: Dot slight below headlength at belly button - 8:36
    Step 13: 2/3 and bit below between belly and crotch, dot headlength (leg joints) - 10:17
    Step 14: Extrapolate V Belly to nipples (arm joints) - 12:21
    Step 15: Collar V to joints curve (arm) - 12:47
    Of course, create some methods in your head to remember the steps. Practice without the video and soon it'll be second nature.
    Hope this helps.

      As a more experienced artist than absolute begginer that wants to better learn how to draw the figure
      The devide line thing makes is kinda hard for me , can we just use head proportions for everything?
      also here are translation to head proprtions (might be wrong idk):
      Mid point = 4 heads
      top chest = 2 heads (we are counting up to down and we count the head itself as 1 head)
      End of chin (end of head) = 1 head
      Belly button= 3 heads
      Knees= 6 heads

    I cant believe how many tutorials basically skip this part of drawing the figure. This basic simplification of proportions is the best thing I've seen on youtube so far. Not only this, you go on to explain to us HOW to actually practice and become better. This is a huge help. Thank You Very Much.

    I alredy seen lots of ways to get the `stick figure` down, this seems to be the best so faar, trough its a bit slow, but proportions are correct, and are easy to remember. Trough it gets hard to measure these points when it gets to 3d and character moves araund.

  • @MyDrawingTutorials
    @MyDrawingTutorials  11 лет назад +5

    I absolutely agree. Not only does throwing in figure drawing every once in a while helps keeps you sharp, but know how to draw the human body is essential to being a well rounded artist.

    *Don't watch this series if you plan on actually learning something.*
    Proportions can easily be learned elsewhere, and they're all you'll be aware of after this series is over, and you won't have anything near mastery of proportions either. The first few episodes are okay, but then everything changes and you end up being forced to just copy an arm and some shading for it (something this video or another of his advises AGAINST) without understanding how or why the lighting is the way it looks, except for a vague 2D representation of the light source for a 3D subject. A lot of questions are left to be asked (or answered in an expensive DVD set).
    I was suspicious of this series pretty early when I saw the scam-like production, but I gave this man the benefit of the doubt, considering that he may not be an expert video developer. By the end of the series, you will want most of your time back. This is all just a long, drawn out (pun intended) advertisement for a DVD that I'm not sure will help. I don't care if the DVD does actually help, because I'd rather spend my money on something else instead of a product from someone who has attempted to build up false trust by wasting the time of the viewers with conflicting nonsense and then asking for money for the "real" product after *two hours* of content.
    I'm glad I stuck with this series though, because now I can see what it is, and I can help you with your learning by advising you to *go elsewhere.* There are more resources here on RUclips--just do a search. You can even get some very cheap books (used and sometimes new) on different subjects of drawing like shading, anatomy, portraiture, etc. on Amazon, Ebay, or other sites. Just be sure to take reviews into consideration or just get the book and see for yourself. At least you'll have the actual product and not some advertisement that will just waste your time.

      The Vicious Drifloon Google will find you _thousands_ of tutorials and books on drawing. I gave hints of where to go. It will take less than 5 minutes to find a nice book on Amazon for $1-$30 (Plus shipping).
      I don't see a point in spending days looking through materials to see which I think is the best to post on RUclips. My comment was to warn people of this one bad tutorial because it's unethical. I'm not that great of an artist and my "collection" of drawing books is practically nil at the moment, so I don't have much expertise on what to get. Product reviews should be able to help (sorting by "negative" can be very helpful).

      Maybe you should start to learn to draw circles and ellipses first. That got rid of my shake lines. The way the circle for the head is drawn in this video is in my opinion not a good technique. (No offense meant). The quality of your lines decides the quality of your work as much as the proportions. And if you start out sketching for a serious attempt at a good and complete drawing, don't use a hard pencil (h1-h6) but use something soft which will erase easily like a b2. If you use a hard pencil and you start shading your character, then you will still see where your sketch was, because the hard pencil damaged the structure of the paper there.

      I found out a long time ago that blank sketch paper tends to make me want to be perfect. Try getting a regular subject notebook, you know, the ones with the sentence lines in it. For some reason, for me, I tend not to get so worked up about the drawings in those, since it doesn't seem to have the same anxiety of that perfectly clean sheet of drawing paper, it allows me to be more experimental and loose.

    • @Azumafoo
      @Azumafoo 8 лет назад

    • @deckard210000
      @deckard210000 8 лет назад +8

      I just started and had the exact same concern. If I don't get it right the first time, I say to myself "whelp, I guess this isn't for me."
      But I realize that is exactly what keeps me from trying. I have to keep fighting that inclination of downing myself because what i think should be good is not as good as what I am seeing amazing artists do. So I am inclined to quit. I now continue to bully my own brain to get out of the idea that if I don't get it right the first time its not that I am untalented, it just means I have to practice. Its the only way.
      I have committed to drawing everyday (which is hard cause i have late meetings and come home exhausted) and to give myself some timeline benchmarks (if I am going to commit to this) I decided to write the date on my sketchbook at the top corner of each page so I have a timeline. I watch the same videos and do the tutorials and exercises, drawing circles and shading over and over, and every other day add a new tutorial to start getting my brain and muscles ready to practice a new skill.
      I have been doing it for about 6 days now and I have smiled every time I look back at the first days sketches. My freehand circles are cleaner, my touch when it comes to shading is finer and more relaxed, and while its not perfect.... it is way better than when I started because I can flip over my sketchbook pages and see the progress.
      Just keep at it, cause I am trying too, and am enjoying the results. :)

    These videos are helpful and i appreciate you making them for everybody to learn from but you need to stop preaching the idea that these things are vital to an artists success. It's not about capturing life in the most literal sense it's about communicating your feelings in a way that others can understand. And that doesn't always mean following the same formula that's been done over and over. An artist needs to find themselves in their own process and thrive from that. Too many impersonal works have been created by the idea that art should only be done a certain way. And that's just not real.

  • @martinzikmund85
    @martinzikmund85 8 лет назад +3

    I always appreciate when somebody finds the time and energy to make a tutorial like this, so thank you. However, speaking for myself, this approach was the thing that was holding my drawing back for a long time. It was good to know where the important body parts were supposed to be, but it always came up unnatural. I guess (again, at least for me) at the beginning the most important thing is compactness of the figure, so I almost always start without measuring the proportions. I just pick a part of body I already know how I want it to look like, eg. the angle of pelvis and the hip-to-chest line, and start the drawing from that point. This, of course, needs a lot of practice and an equal amount of motivation. It's very helpful to redraw a photos from time to time. I can recommend the pin-up pictures for this. It's usually somewhere on the way between photography and drawing, so both the lines and shading are clearly visible.

    I kind of just drift off halfway...
    Also, I'm curious as to why hands always end at the crotch's tip (never thought I'd say that) when in reality they usually end at the middle of the femur :L

    • @MyDrawingTutorials
      @MyDrawingTutorials  9 лет назад +1

      Vivian Lee Interesting... You're right. The finger tips does go a bit past the end of the crotch when you extend them. So I was a bit off.
      Proportions does vary from person to person and artist do change the real proportions of the figure in order to suit the style that they are drawing in (comic books and manga are two good examples). So unless you are drawing a super realistic style, the proportions are rarely exact.
      In this case, I think my measurements were slightly off. In any case, I will be doing more research in the this subject in the future. Thanks for pointing that out.

  • @MyDrawingTutorials
    @MyDrawingTutorials  11 лет назад

    Hmm, that's a very good question. I don't have much experience with drawing cartoon, so please take this answer for what it's worth. But I think cartoon proportions follows a different set of rules. So if you are interested in drawing cartoons, you need to practice with those types of proportions.
    Hopefully in the future I can add some cartoon drawing tutorials to this channel.
    Hope that helps.

    I figured out from the drawing grid and drawing the character 7 to 8 heads tall. Each space rather 7 or 8 heads tall is basically 1" between each line. So basically if your figure is 7 heads tall the space between each line is 1". I learned this from school.

    I've been drawing animals all my life and decided to start drawing humans. This is really helpful! Each month, I'll come back to this comment and share my progress as an artist for a year. By that time, I'll be 16 years old and hopefully better than I am now.
    Edit:
    First of March (Day I started): I made an extra figure and drew a character with it. The character looked really manly, but that's probably because I've been doing my proportions wrong, and I used a more cartoon-like style before. The figure was really useful and helped eliminate issues I had previously. I'm pretty happy with it~

    I already knew about the memory thing :3 I'm the type of person who, if I really like a movie I'll watch it again and again. You'll be surprised at some of the things you miss the first time round! As a child, I could quote movies like Watership Down and Jurassic Park verbatim, every single scene! That ability is now lost, but it goes to show what the human brain is truly capable of if you give it enough exercise.

    Based on these vids I purchased PERSPECTIVE MADE SIMPLE 1/2 FIGURE DRAWING 1/2 and REALISTIC PORTRAITS 1/2 and I have to say I found these dvd's VERY VERY disappointing. I doubt if these so called artists are professionaly trained. Also they need training in how to speak English. Sorry to be so negative guys but I think if you are going to charge us you need to go back to Art School.
