    SpaceX and NASA are targeting Sunday, November 15 for Falcon 9’s launch of Dragon’s first operational crew mission (Crew-1) to the International Space Station (ISS) from historic Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The instantaneous launch window opens at 7:27 p.m. EST on November 15, 00:27 UTC on November 16. Following stage separation, SpaceX will attempt to land Falcon 9’s first stage on the “Just Read the Instructions” droneship, which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean. The launch webcast will go live about 4 hours before liftoff. Tune in here to watch live.

      @@jagan1458 Although the first crewed flight (demo) was the first manned SpaceX launch it technically was still an experimental test flight.
      This mission however was the first fully operational commercially provided manned launch provided by a non-state actor in our planets history. I should also make clear that although the ability to sell this program is -currently- provided by NASA, and a substantial amount of funding has been provided by the same, that SpaceX is the primary driving force and owner of this achievement. I was going to say nominally, but I realised it would be inappropriate to say the least.
      This is an amazing considering the time frame and the funding allocated. The Saturn V project alone, not even counting the lunar program etc, was about $50 billion in todays dollars. Apollo was $200 billion. Might as well throw the space shuttle in there. Another $200 billion.
      SpaceX is putting people in LEO for a development cost of a ballpark figure of about $1 billion + whatever they have used of the NASA $3 billion grant for the crew program. Note that the dragon capsule and falcon 9 program prior to this grant only cost about $1 billion to develop.

    The Fun Phase :) The only thing that sucks about space currently is the Bathroom. I hope that we can somehow make artificial gravity even if it was limited to the bathroom and if we could have a second spot would be a common space for eating and working out. When they designed the space station they should have made a middle area with an outside ring that revolves to create the sense of gravity. Now to be able to make this happen we would have to reconstruct the entire station to make this happen or somehow use the existing structure as the center portion while somehow including that massive ring that would create this environment while still being able to transverse back and forth which doesn't seem likely with its currently build. Maybe when they think of building the moon station they will include this into the design and have it modular still so replacing section's will be easy.

      Because they were having trouble with the thermal control. The last few times you see the crew, you can tell that they're *cold.* As far as I've heard, the problem got resolved after a while. But I'm guessing that a freezing cold crew due to technical issues was the last thing they wanted to broadcast.
      Edit: 4:32:16 - That's where you can really tell they're having trouble with the cold. About an hour before that there was a request from the crew to 'go external', which I interpret as them wanting to discuss stuff with ground control without causing a panic for viewers/listeners.

      The capsule doesn't travel in a straight line to the ISS. Instead it is first launched into a lower orbit and approaches the station carefully. Roughly speaking:
      The ISS is in a (more-or-less) circular orbit at about 410 km in altitude. At its altitude and orbital velocity it takes about 90 minutes to complete an orbit.
      The capsule launches into a lower (more-or-less) circular orbit coplanar with the orbit of the ISS (think two concentric circles in the same plane). In its lower orbit, the capsule is traveling faster than the ISS (see Kepler's laws). Over several orbits the capsule "catches up" to the ISS.
      After a few orbits they're in the right positions relative to each other ("phase") for the next step. The capsule executes a sequence of maneuvers to adjust its orbit to (nearly) intersect the orbit of the ISS, timed ("phased") so that the two craft arrive at that intersection simultaneously, and then to match velocity with the ISS when they reach that point. The last few km of approach are performed slowly and cautiously to minimize the risk of a collision or other accident.
      Smarter Every Day has a good video on how the Soyuz spacecraft performed its rendezvous with the ISS: ruclips.net/video/qFjw6Lc6J2g/видео.html

    Why does it take them over a day to reach ISS when google tells me that you can reach the ISS faster than traveling to London

    • @peterbarratt8699
      @peterbarratt8699 4 года назад +4

      If they had left 24 hours earlier, it would have taken 8.5 hours to get there. Now, however, the required trajectory changed due to ISS orbit continuous changes.

    • @paulmichaelfreedman8334
      @paulmichaelfreedman8334 4 года назад +7

      They have to catch up with the space station. Objects travelling at 27,500 kph tend to do some damage. So they launch when the ISS is overhead, by the time they are in space the ISS has raced ahead so they have to travel slightly faster than the ISS (and from a slightly lower orbit) so they slowly catch up and rise to the ISS orbital plane. How they approach is also dependent on the orbit characteristics and the launch windows in which they launched. All to be sure there are no collisions. Soyuz' last launch was so accurate they were able to dock within 3 hrs of launch so it is possible. Just with Dragon being so new they are careful.
