I have been using scraps to make hats and scarves to give to the homeless shelter so that people can stay warm throughout the winter. Everytime I bring in a bag of them my local homeless shelter is thrilled to see me coming with them. I usually take them about every 2 weeks to a month and the hats, scrarves and gloves get used up fairly quickly.
I've come to the decision that using leftovers needs to be "not my problem". Almost all leftovers go in a bag, when the bag is big enough, I go on Ravelry and offer to ship them in a flat-rate box anywhere within Canada. Then they aren't my problem and they're someone else's solution! That said, I do have a lot of minis that I sometimes struggle to use (aside from gnomes, of course!)
I'm actually working on building up a scrap stash... I was so terrified of having "useless" yarn hanging about that I would throw away perfectly good leftover yarn. Seeing you work on busting your scrap stash is actually helping me feel more confident about keeping mine, and knowing that there's plenty I can make out of these scraps. It's part of trying to be more environmentally and fiscally sensible with my crochet
For the 2nd year I am now busy not buying yarn for a year, because I have a lot of yarn and leftovers, mainly acrylic, which I no longer want to use for myself, but I also regret giving it away, so I have obliged myself to first use all my acrylic and then mainly the remainders first. Last year I knitted hats for the food bank and this year I'm making blankets for the food bank and people under administration. but to avoid the grind and boredom I do all scrappy blankets with dice I take 2 dice and take 11 different colors of yarn and throw each row with a dice and the number of eyes you throw then corresponds to a certain color and in my case I crochet then in with the linen stitch. so it remains a surprise for you which color is next. I have also made a calculation how many grams/balls will be in the blanket. I need a total of 17 100grams balls of leftovers for 1 blanket of 130x200cm. I just crochet a few rounds every day depending on my craft time that day and that's how I work through my acrylic stash this year and in December I bring all crocheted blankets to the food bank as a Christmas package. the customers happy I'm happy ;)
My crochet group uses lots of scraps to make our Comfort Critters that we donate to the dementia care wing of the Assisted Living Centers and to the Sherries Dept., to give to little kids who need them. If you have extra scraps, we would love to use them. Thank you for your fun videos. Sue. I will send you a pic if you would like.
Tiny sweaters are what I hope to make from scraps moving forward. Next xmas my fam is getting sets of tiny sweaters with the first initial of each member of the individual family units arranged in a garland to drape over a doorway or on the wall. Maybe the year after that will be tiny pet sweater garlands. Eventually I'll get into amigurumi to spend scraps on I imagine
I can’t wait to see how your granny stripe finishes up. And the granny square too. I have just recently started knitting and don’t really have scraps. So I am taking the leftovers from current projects and rewinding them. Then putting them wrapping them up to open as my own advent. One of the best things about a bad memory is by Christmas I won’t remember some of the yarns. 😂
It's interesting how people classify things differently. I love scrappy projects. For me though, most of the yarn I see here I'd call stash. To me, anything that is 20g or more, or untouched, is stash. So only my bits and pieces of leftovers are scraps. These go into scrappy projects I love, along with selections from stash to blend things and add up as I require something of course. When it comes to leftovers, I giggled and liked Stephen West's philosophy that as soon as you've wound up a ball you can consider it leftover lol.
I enjoy making baby booties for charity with scrap yarns. They are small projects that easily fit into handbags, are quick to make especially on the go, and I only have one pattern that I use so that I am not having to refer back to a document. Charities are also extremely happy to receive such items, especially seen as i use mostly acrylic (and am working my way though my own stash like you did last year) making them washable and good to give to low income parents.
In the fall of 2022 I started working with my leftovers/scraps. I made a lot of hats to donate and I started a scrappy blanket from al my sock yarn scraps. But the blanket is more a memory blanket, than a scrap yarn blanket. I also love colourwork and striped socks, so most of my sockyarn scraps will be used for other socks. My focus this year is if I finish a project (but not socks, because those yarns will be used as I explained), I'll (almost directly) make something with the leftovers. I think it mostly will be (baby)hats, because I like knitting them, they're great, quick projects after I finish a garment(because this year I would really like to make garments with sustainble materials for my warderobe) and I can donate them to people who can use them. Or if I end with a lot of leftovers I'll maybe make a hat or something for myself. I think that I made a wrong calculations when I bought the yarn I started making a sweater from yesterday, I'll think I will end up with multiple balls, so I'm thinking of making a scarf with it (already found a beautifull pattern) When I look at the box that hold all my scrapyarns, it feels great to see that they're are not that many scraps left! It feels good to use almost all of the fiber, saved money by working with what I already had, donate items and don't waste a lot of yarn.
I am also doing some scrappy projects - one is a striped Lifesavers cardigan - each stripe is a different mini or scrap. The other is making tons of i-cord with scraps which will then be knit into a chunky blanket. I am going to employ my husband to do the cranking of the i-cord maker. :)
So inspiring, Natalie! Time management can be a problem. It’s hard enough sorting stash let alone deciding what to do with it. Overwhelming for sure! But you show it can be done. Great long range plans…have fun! 🎉
Color placement help….. the Fibonacci sequence and the Golden Ratio. You Tuber Kate from The Last Homely House did a quilt. She has a whole video color choice and placement.
I have been looming and knitting ear warmers and hats. I am now using some of my scrap yarn to practice lace-knitting. I also am saving my square knittings for a blanket I hope to finish this year. Since I have a lot of brown yarn, I will be making some bears with scrap color sweaters. 🐻😍
Natalie have you seen the Granny Square Afghan that the Crazy Sock Lady is doing using the join as you go process? It will be beautiful when you get it done.
Hooked by Robin's how to crochet the continuous join as you go (CJASG) method is my favorite for joining granny squares! There's no seaming them together and you don't have an extra end for each square. In my opinion, it's the best way to join the squares if you have them all done before joining. I've used it so many times that I don't have to watch the video anymore :) Also, if you could keep up with a square a day through vlogmas, joining 3 squares per day should take you around the same amount of time as that and if you occasionally did 4 squares you can totally get it done in Feb!
Hi Natalie! I actually made the caliqo quilt shawl as a blanket! There are tips in the pattern for how to do this, but you basically knit the shawl and then pick up from the top and knit another shawl - making a square blanket =) So if the minis are 20g this is perfect since each triangle uses just under 10!
I am using my 4 weight yarn scraps in a log cabin afghan and smaller bits in a hexi flower one. Have had an ongoing bernat blanket yarn scraps granny for the last 3 years....someday it will be big enough lol
I love your little stash busting series! I have vowed not to buy new yarn this year unless it’s for an order or an existing subscription (I only have the one per month) but I’m now also going to sort all my oddments out in weight and grams to make a stash buster project soon!! #scrapfree2023
Once you start connecting the squares, it goes pretty fast. I think you’ll be surprised and get it done faster than you think. I’ll be looking forward to seeing your progress on all of these projects. You’ve inspired me to put a timeline on my projects this year!
I absolutely love watching all your ideas. I actually decided that since this year is the first year I bought a yarn advent, that I’ll make myself a garter stitch blanket held double with a bare yarn. It actually looks really good so far and as I’ve never made myself a blanket before I’m really excited to see the end results.
Loved your ideas in this video. I usually knit baby things like mittens and hats out of my scraps, but I produce more than I can knit up 😅 maybe because I’m not a crocheter but do you explicitly want a double round of accent color between your granny squares? Like in the inner parts, according to your calculation, two rows will meet on the side of each square, but not so for edge and corner pieces.. if not intended you’ll have plenty of yarn to make something else out of 😅 cheers from Germany, love your bubbly podcasts
I am making a lot of beanies with the same acrylic yarn, different colors. And I keep the scraps (approx 150-200g) to make a tote bag inspired by the Prada one with all of the colors. I just want to finish my beanies before beginning the bag so maybe more like in the last six months of this year ^^
For your project number 4. Stephen west said he is coming out with another modular shawl soon. Kinda like his vertices unite. The new design should come out in next couple months he said.
I have loved your granny stripe blanket so much that I have been watching tutorials and am now starting one. I don’t have many fingering weight scraps so I may need to buy some minis eventually. I love your podcasts so much
Really enjoyed enjoyed watching your plans for all your lovely minis and left overs! I love making blankets with left over yarn! Even if you decide you don’t want them yourself, there are always charities which love to receive a warm blanket! Will love to see your progress on these projects!
My dogs have blankets for every situation and season haha, mostly from cotton (scraps), and I always make a blanket if a friend is having a baby or bringing home a new dog! Always wayyy more excited for the dogs though 😂 I love the granny projects, I'm very excited to see them finished!
I love all your scrappy projects, especially the knitted one since I'm working on a knitted Temperature blanket for my birth year, I feel like I'll have company on this blanket-knitting journey :)
Hello my name is Melinda and i watch you all the time and i love your dog and i have 2 Husky a male and a girl there name is Lacey and frost i have never been to New York
I'm doing a year of using up my scraps too!! I plan to make myself an Anthology throw and make my husband a Ragvent blanket. After that hats that I can donate!! I also plan on always having a scrappy project that I have going on so that as I finish projects I can just add my scrap yarn into my scrap project..thus hopefully eliminating scraps all together!!
@@KnittyNatty I saw this amazing one that uses ten grams of colored yarn and then ten grams of bare yarn to create a striped effect! I plan to do that too since I mostly have ten gram scraps!
I love using scraps - it is so satisfying. You can definitely finish using JAYG - once you get going its a really quick and effective method. Toaster is so beautiful Natty 😍
I'm using scrap yarn yo make fun crocheted cable covers/protectors! I have some green cotton yarn I'm using to make them look like vines and adding flowers/fruits in other colors like pinks, oranges and reds. I Even have one flower that changes it's shade of pink halfway through cause the scrap was sooo tiny 😭😭. I'm collecting the itsy bitsy scraps in a jar to use them as stuffing for the tiny fruits later on.
I have put together a bag of scraps for my local knitting group to use so i can focus on the 170 plus other balls i have 🧶 there is also yarns that dont bring me joy
Continuous Join As You Go… It’s the best way to join your Feb squares as it will be nice and stretchy..a similar fabric stretch, as each square. I’ve used it often…(and can’t look back when joining any other way) A solid write or black would look stunning. I’m anxious to see what you decide…
I was watching your vlog and looked over at the couch, only to see my dog cuddled up on my afghan. I thought I would share with you since you said Toaster loves your afghans.
Blankets are a great idea to combine different colors that we like but we generally don't use. I made a granny square one, queen sized, as a gift for my parents before I moved out to another country. It took me about a year but it totally worth it!
I just did a join as you go granny square blanket with my bumble bee acres advent. It was fun, and the colorways look beautiful. I did 25 squares in about 3 or 4 days. It will be doable for you in a month. I had to rip back a few times. There is a bit of a learning curve. Enjoy your projects!
Thanks for another great update - I love these stash series. Every time I see your granny stripe I want to start one myself. But I’ve got a mitred square blanket on the go and want to finish that before I start any other blankets. I took out all my scraps ( that weren’t minis ) and decided that I’m going to make a marled magic shawl with them.
Thank you your inspiring journey! I only began knitting 3 years ago, but have acquired quite a lot of yarn in that time. All of the yarn I have purchased, I had a project idea for but over time what I want to knit changes and the yarns I love come and go. As I do a lot of fair isle knitting I collected a lot of colors of different types of yarn too. So now I'm at the purge the acrylic worsted weight yarns and fuzzy blanket yarns that I don't think I'll use. I will hang onto my fair isle wool fingering and sport weight yarns as they are my Palette for fair isle projects and designs I'm working on. I will also keep the yarns for projects I have planned- a few sweaters and such.
Hi, Natalie - thank you so much for so many great ideas! How do you deal with your ends in your scrappy projects? Do you use the magic knot or do you sew/weave in your ends? Thanks!
I love scrappy projects. Each one is a mystery. I’m using my stash to knit coffee cozies for Birthday presents and a dozen or so Sophie Scarves for Christmas presents. The coffee cozies are a quick 2 hour knit. I plan to make at least one Sophie Scarf a month. Also pulling from my scraps for contrasting cuffs and ties for socks this year.
I’m using my scraps to crochet baskets over macrame cord. I’ve done 2 so far and have requests from friends to make them one, so I’ll be doing that. I also want to make some yarn skein ball holders and a soda can cosy. I have some large skeins of DK which I really need to find a project for. I only just started knitting this past new year. I love your videos and seeing all your beautiful yarns and projects. You have such a great choice in your country. We don’t have much choice where I am from. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Natalie! I love all your scrappy project ideas and goals! I have a grannie stripe blanket ongoing as well that I use for scraps. This year I also started a second crochet grannie blanket that I just put leftover Christmas yarns into. I hope someday it will be a family heirloom 🎄❤️
nice choices! i havae the ""A homespun house advent" as well. I am going to divide it up into two groups. there are a lot of pinks, purples, mauves... and then a lot of teal, blue, brown, tans.... so i'm thinking about cowls...
I have 2 scrappy projects in the works! I started a fingering weight granny stripe blanket a couple of years ago after I started watching your podcast. It's getting semi close to being done! I more recently started a scrappy hex blanket where I'm going to throw different weights of yarn into it by holding yarn double, crocheting extra rounds, or using a bigger hook.
this is great! i started crocheting this year and already have a significant stash, so i'm definitely going to keep these ideas in mind for the future once that stash becomes scraps 😂 i have actually not yet done granny squares of any kind much less turning them into a blanket--i didn't realize that the joining would make two "edges" between squares! i thought adjoining sides would be connected by one row of stitches
When you said that the granny stripes blanket would be your first project I was extremely shocked for a second, cause I thought you meant you would be starting a brand new granny stripes blanket and trying to finish it in January 😂
when I get to the point that there's little useful yarn left and/or I've decided I don't like how that yarn knits up, I put them in a bag for stuffing for when I make animals or pumpkins or other objects so I don't have to use polyfill.
Similar to the Radvent Throw I’m working up the Creative Advent Throw with my Homespun House 2022 advent. Good pattern variety that uses the majority of the mini skein! 😊
Natalie, love seeing all the ideas for scrappy bits. I am working on a few scrappy blankets using various weights of yarn. I am really trying to use up as much of my oddments as possible this year.
I adore the continuous jayg. Did it for a baby blanket for a friend last year and it goes surprisingly quick. If it's your main projects I think it is feasible to finish a blanket in a month. It took me a month and a half to do 130 small squares. I'm slow tho so ymmv.
As someone whose birthday is May 31st, I did have to laugh when you were worried about not having enough days in May to get through all 31 colors, but at least that makes the math work out! I’m curious to know if you always (or nearly always) buy the same weight category of yarn (fingering, worsted, etc)? I love the idea of scrappy projects and I feel like I have plenty, but when I pull out my bin it always seems like I have 1/3 of the amount I need in each weight.
At 96 squares for your join as you go blanket you’d need to do about 4 squares a day and that leaves you 4 days as a buffer (or 4 days to add your boarder?) seems fairly doable if you have a lot of crocheting time 🙂
After her last video I decided to organize my scraps and I have began the Neith top by crochet with Carrie(free pattern) and I think if I have any left over I will make the swatch bag by Skaberglaede.
I have been using scraps to make hats and scarves to give to the homeless shelter so that people can stay warm throughout the winter. I love scrappy projects
Ooh that marled magic shawl sounds awesome!
Me too!
Your videos have inspired me to finish one unfinished project every month. I already cast off a weekender sweater this month!
I’m loving the maths for the granny squares. I got a blanket club this year so I’m going to find your calculations useful when I come to join mine.
I looooove scrap projects 😍 this will be fun!
Lizard ridge blanket would look great in the homespun house advent
You should check out Leslie from A Friend to knit with. She knit the Simple Stripes Sweater with advent yarn, it turned out beautifully.
Hi, Natalie - thank you so much for so many great ideas! How do you deal with your ends in your scrappy projects? Do you use the magic knot or do you sew/weave in your ends? Thanks!
I would like to know how you do the ends too. That’s why I haven’t done a scrappy project.
I really wish that I had enough scraps for a blanket because I just love yours🥰 thank you for a love episode - love to follow you☺️
Thank you for the great ideas I’ve been organizing stash need to step it up process has been dragging recently. Thanks for being cheerful 🧶❤️
I have been LOVING this series.
Ooooh I love your project ideas!! Once you get going on the JAYG (join as you go), your squares will fly together so fast.
Some great ideas there for you to have fun with. I'm currently just using my scraps in a garter blanket x
I've watched that Granny striped blanket grow. It will be wild to see it finally finished.
You’ve got this! That is completely possible. I was surprised that the continuous join went so quickly.
Hi Natalie! I love all your scrappy project ideas and goals! I have a grannie stripe blanket ongoing as well that I use for scraps. This year I also started a second crochet grannie blanket that I just put leftover Christmas yarns into. I hope someday it will be a family heirloom 🎄❤️
Looking forward to seeing part 3 🧶
I’ve started a granny stripe blanket to use all my sock yarn scraps! So far so good 😊
nice choices! i havae the ""A homespun house advent" as well. I am going to divide it up into two groups. there are a lot of pinks, purples, mauves... and then a lot of teal, blue, brown, tans.... so i'm thinking about cowls...
Love the sea glass tee!! Anxious to start my own scrappy projects - the colors are so fun!
I'm using up my left over sock yarn & fingering weight stash in a scrappy granny stripes blanket. I'm holding two strands together.
Another cool modular blanket that may look great in the homespun house's advent is Ysolda's Nectar blanket.
The Crochet Baby Blanket is what I chose for my advent yarn, too. I haven’t started yet but hope to soon! 💜
Natalie, love seeing all the ideas for scrappy bits. I am working on a few scrappy blankets using various weights of yarn. I am really trying to use up as much of my oddments as possible this year.
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
I adore the continuous jayg. Did it for a baby blanket for a friend last year and it goes surprisingly quick. If it's your main projects I think it is feasible to finish a blanket in a month. It took me a month and a half to do 130 small squares. I'm slow tho so ymmv.
Happy knitting! And crocheting!
A lovely stashbuster is the Spot Sweater from Anne Ventzel... here in Europe we have lots of Kals for this... Lots of love
I went and looked this up and wow is it ever a great sweater for oddments!
Your projects sound so fun
just came from part 1 and subscribed :) so happy i came across your channel!
At 96 squares for your join as you go blanket you’d need to do about 4 squares a day and that leaves you 4 days as a buffer (or 4 days to add your boarder?) seems fairly doable if you have a lot of crocheting time 🙂
I really love hooked by robin's "tight jayg" so if anyone wants a tut :)
After her last video I decided to organize my scraps and I have began the Neith top by crochet with Carrie(free pattern) and I think if I have any left over I will make the swatch bag by Skaberglaede.
Cozy up knit came out with a free advent blanket as will called
