I remember a co-worker talking to me about Catan before I was a gamer, around maybe 2016. I wasn't interested in playing tabletop games back then, but the hobby finally clicked with me in 2021. It's a blast to come back to these older videos and see hot games that are now "classics." A family friend loves Small World, and I've not played it, but I had to check it out. Thanks for being there / then, BGG!
wow, I'm getting strong "Catan: Rise of the Inka" vibes with the civilizations in decline and new ones! 🤩 This looks like a great game to play! Thanks for always taking the time to explain the rules in detail and with an example 😁
Jeff, you are correct. The previous version of the game, "Vinci", allows you to draw your "civ" on the turn you decline. They played the game incorrectly in the same manner on Small World which removes some of the mystery of a player coming on the board with their new civ.
I've watched several videos of this game, and I've witnessed diplomatic skeletons crush everyone. I think that your best strategy with skeletons is to pick up almost all your skeletons (abandoning some locations) and attack as much as possible. This increases the size of your skeleton army.
Race selection takes place on the following turn after placing your current race into Decline. This changes up the game since not knowing what Race your opponent is picking forces you to guess at their strategy and upcoming abilities.
Biggest mistake you made here was the double turn. You're not allowed to take another race on the same turn that you go into decline..You have to wait until your next turn
When they mess up rules, they should make some note of it afterwards when the error is revealed. Sorcerers can only convert an opponent if there is a single active figure sitting in the region.
It also has to be a region your sorcerers can actually conquer, they were flirting with the idea of sorcerers being able to to flip any race token that is single. But it still must be adjacent, unless the sorcerers are flying, and then just let the tears fly lol
One thing they forgot to mention about ghouls is that they not only remain on the board when they go in decline, but they can also keep conquering (essentially giving you two conquest rounds)
Argh, allowing somone going into decline to immediately choose a race is a bit of a fail. It prevents the first perdon in decline from having their choice of races when it come back to them. Especially important if prior opponent moves have changed the strategy.
one thing you guys got wrong though is you are suposed to keep the other races and powers in a stack next to the 5 avalible ones and if you pay 5 vp to take the 6th race on the top of the pile
I think they just glossed the word "active", as I know I heard Dave read it out loud. Unfortunately, "active" is a really bad word to gloss over for that race! Pretty sure Nikki wins if not for that.
Pillaging orc's thats a combo that you never want to play against, they are completly broken, for every enemy region you conquer a turn you get 3 coins, 1 for pilliaging, 1 for the race, and one for the region.
@Jamiemackie- modern games draw heavily on concepts from RPGs especially Dungeons and Dragons - Small World is basically Risk-lite meets D&D - I think the game looks good IF you applied house rules
+Keith Parker House rules suck the fun out. The race combos are kinda meant to be broken. There are many combos that super good that you'll need a rule for half the combos, the more you play the more rules you'll want to pile on until the game breaks in the other way. It is a game that is player balanced, meaning that if someone is piling up coins everyone at the table attacks him. That is the game. I also think risk is lighter than smallworld.
i don't know what it's made from but the d6 that came with mine is off balance favoring a blank side so i use one from my dice collection and just tell ppl if 4,5,6, come up they are worth zero
Hey Lincoln thank you for your comments back on those other videos if you don’t mind my saying so because this video is so old and has such lower quality audio I think you guys should consider playing this game again I’m not suggesting deleting this video but upload a new one of you guys playing it with perhaps another new friend or even just the three of you like you have been lately
Thanks for the kind words. I would love to do it again since I didn't get to play it in the episode but it is unlikely since we have so many new games (and some older) that we want to show people. Thanks again for the note and for watching.-Lincoln
at first i tought you guys had a wall of glass bong ... but i think its more like glass basket...guys you should smoke more green, and play this game naked, its better.
I think when you go to decline you do nothing that turn and not like on video, you choose new rase. You are just in decline and choosing new rase is at the start of your next turn, exactly as turn 1.Also going in decline super fast im you doesnt conquered enough territories and you have a lot of tokens, as we have seen that with elves is not a good option. Also you cannot transform with sorcerers tokens that are in decline and its written in the rules about the race in 1st sentence (its written you can transform only "active" token). The lost tribe tokens that starting on the map every game also are not active. There are so many mistakes in the first 1/3 of the video (i just stopped watching it after), that my advise is - if somebody want to be sure in the rules, its better to check the rulebook of Smallworld. It is very short and user-friendly.
This was a good game-but really hard to listen to. Just the number of times the men wanted to tell the woman how to play-very hard to listen to; and Dave’s whiney “agree with me that I knew what you should do” debrief piece made me shut it off.
Wow. First time I have ever seen someone play this game and use the mountain tokens. As soon as we realized how useless they were, they were in the garbage. Granted this is old, but if you are going to showcase a game, getting the major rules correct is helpful.

I think once skelletons come into play players should ally to reduce them as much as they can. They become too many!
Yes diplomacy skeleton sweep

you can also pick from the race that is on top of the stack

Correct, they were attacking single opponents in decline, you can't do that
It also has to be a region your sorcerers can actually conquer, they were flirting with the idea of sorcerers being able to to flip any race token that is single. But it still must be adjacent, unless the sorcerers are flying, and then just let the tears fly lol
Watched the whole game, you guys are awesome!
One thing they forgot to mention about ghouls is that they not only remain on the board when they go in decline, but they can also keep conquering (essentially giving you two conquest rounds)

They did the decline wrong. It is supposed to be decline and score and that is all for that turn, then your next turn you pick a new race and power.
one thing you guys got wrong though is you are suposed to keep the other races and powers in a stack next to the 5 avalible ones and if you pay 5 vp to take the 6th race on the top of the pile
never knew my beloved game here was a take in vinchi

+lifelesspoet why would house rules not work?
It's like playing whack a mole. There is so much that looks like it needs fixing. Where do you stop? I went down that road and it hurt the game.
lifelesspoet I was referring in general to people's weird hatred of house rules yet irl they are implemented a LOT of the time
Finally! I played this at me last game night!
why all your movie have subtitle off?
i don't know what it's made from but the d6 that came with mine is off balance favoring a blank side so i use one from my dice collection and just tell ppl if 4,5,6, come up they are worth zero

Nikky should not of let go of the elves so soon, you score the fortresses and regenerate the elves
at first i tought you guys had a wall of glass bong ... but i think its more like glass basket...guys you should smoke more green, and play this game naked, its better.
Sorcerer's power is after you are finished conquering for your turn.
My rules don't say anything about that. You can do it whenever, then continue to conquer. (I've had the game for 4 years or so)
I can be done during the movement. It is so in Days ow Wonders own online game so I feel pretty certain....
Boo, they used the summary sheets and it did not have that detail.
they have lids, that's not for nothing :P

Yeah they look absolutely miserable to play with. Kudos to her for getting through it. I can't imagine.
Hard to concentrate on the game with all the new Lego in the background!

xragg If you're newer to the game it's a good +1 reminder. Once experienced I can see leaving it in the box.
They ruin the board art.
DRINK ON THE TABLE! DRINK ON THE TABLE!
Disaster in the making.
Small world is okay, but definitely not the best game of all time, I really don't know why its so high ranked on BGG.
