I seem to remember Asda adverts where it had a smiley face and it talked.

I remember this being played in the cinema before The Cable Guy started, in 1996.

Try going into Asda and helping yourself to a cake! You couldn't do it in 1996 and you sure as shit can't do it now.

Neither would Asda or any other retailer give a customer a free cake

When my family moved to England from Scotland we were devout Asda customers for about 17 years

Asda used to prepare most of their fresh food instore. The delicatessen counters, salad bars, bakery/ patisserie counters, butchers, fishmongers all prepared by trained staff. Now apart from the bakery departments, pizza counters and rotisserie. They've all gone.
Walmart have destroyed the company, and it is now selling the company back to British private equity companies that will saddle the company with billions of pounds worth of debt.

Adsa price permanently low that must be a joke considering how expensive Asda is now no wonder they did away with the whole asda price thing

They still use ASDA Price also Tesco and Sainsbury's are more expensive but Waitrose and M&S are the biggest rip offs of all time

They sprinkle the jam doughnuts? They'll be there forever. Most bakeries just tip them in a tray of sugar and shake. It's faster and properly covered in sugar. Not quite as visually appealing though.

The sprinkling by hand was probably just for TV, simulating an old-fashioned Yorkshire bakery from days gone by
