Chicago's Little Village: A drive down 26th Street

- Joe Askins of YoChicago.com continues his drive through Chicago's Little Village neighborhood with a drive down one of the city's most active commercial streets, West 26th Street. The street and surrounding neighborhood is the heart of Chicago's Mexican community and site of a huge annual Mexican Independence Day celebration.
I was recently in Chicago and mistook 26th street for Ogden when I pulled out of the Sam's store. I ended up in Little Village and was fascinated with the Beautiful culture I was seeing. My wife and I were stunned to see the bustling community obviously run by the Mexicans. It was absolutely Beautiful to us. So much Commerce. The Mexicans are an industrious people and have a lot to offer. We are black and from Alabama. Please embrace this place, shop there and support the businesses, we have nothing like this in Alabama.
loose screws You wouldn't last ten minutes after dark. It was a Czech and polish neighborhood before.
I am sure you know much more about Little Village than I do. It is sad that Chicago has such culture but the people don't respect it. If you also look at the old Victorian homes in Detroit it makes one angry that they are being destroyed. Same with Chicago. I won't debate you on what you know about Little Village that I don't know Steve X.
I did not mean you don't respect it. I mean the people of the neighborhood don't respect their own community. there should not be gangs and hookers etc.
Steve X
That's a lie Mike.
loose screws
As there should not be Drug addicts and john does etc.
Thanks for posting. I grew up in Little Village during the 1960s and 1970s. Lived on Kedvale and then on Pulaski just south of 26th. When I was a kid in 2nd grade I was running around with a friend in that Walgreens on the corner of 26th and Pulaski and rounded a corner and knocked over a rack of coffee mugs. The manager grabbed me and called my mom at work to come pay for them. If I'm not mistaken, that Western Store at the end of the video is in the building that used to be the old Club Moravia, a social hall for the Czech community, bingo, dances, and wedding receptions. Back then Little Village was a Polish and Czech neighborhood. Most people aspired to move to the suburbs and did. Now a new wave of immigrants have moved in. But its the same in a way. All that commerce on 26th he commented on was there back then, just different stores and restaurants. Great neighborhood back then. Lots of trees on the side streets.

Yes, the best beef in Chicago!!
Still are Chickies ( in hillside)
I too remember Chickie's, it was on about 28th and Pulaski. I lived a few blocks away from there
Good City and Country. Thanks for this
26th street little village is the number 2 commerce in Chicago after Michigan avenue....technically the neighborhood is divided by 2 gangs....in turn each side has there own McDonald’s, Burger King, Walgreens, subway, a specific Mexican brand grocery store on each side (la Chiquita), it is obviously intentional because of the gang culture, helps keep some peace for families to come out n enjoy these businesses without the threat of rival gangs at the same McDonald’s per say...u know which one belongs to your side n that’s where you go. Regarding the jail, it used to be just one building courthouse with its jail, n obviously throughout the years, different aspects of the court system it’s grown to have a vast number of employees (won’t exaggerate, idk exact #) anyways, it’s federally licensed/funded, so there’s more then meets the eye to this 1st impression when u 1st turn onto 26th on California. Keep little village’s truth front n center, 26th street, little village commerce is Chicago’s 2nd next to Michigan avenue. For the record, the city of big shoulders has so much to attribute to little village for its continuing growth.
Thanks for the video.....i grew up in little village, 30th& drake great memories of driving down 26th st on sundays.
I miss being 9 years old.
Goldblatts ,A and P food store, Atlantic theater, are gone ,the old neighbor has gone down hill
Yes you are out. Before you were there others nationality said the same about your people. Glad u r gone"'
You are right I grew up on 23rd and Sacramento. Attended John Spry Elementary and Harrison High School on Marshall Blvd. Shopped and worked on 26th street. Use to be a Goldblatt's Department and Saxons Paint Store, Jack in the Box. Those days the area was alot nice and safer.
Have moved and live in Houston, Texas for 32 years. The gangs are so bad in Chicago.

I grew up there and when I was only 5 this little girl already wanted to fight me like wtf
That's a beautiful neighborhood thinking about moving to little village with my daughters this next summer, seems real quiet and etiquette. Yikes!! Very, very nice neighborhood wow amazed by the architecture, gosh my lord.
I don't know if you already moved but I'd recommend you not move here, coming from someone who's in little village it's very very gang associated and just filled with violence as well, not the ideal place to move to.
@@leslieruiz6933 he’s being sarcastic Lmao

I ended up in this area around 2am - landed at Midway Airport; my then 21 year-old was looking for a 24 hr. taco stand. I was amazed to see a prison surround by homes and stores etc.,
Grew up around the 26th/Kedzie area
Why didn't u comment of the prison that you saw??
He did coment by finding it interesting 🤔
Cause its not a prison, its Cook County Jail, that side of the wall is the oldest part of the jail.

Streets are filled with sinkholes when I was there last. The people aren't nearly as friendly as they used to be, so I didn't stop at one of my old favorite hangouts with grilled steak tacos. Oh well, gotta keep pushing.
Lit village 28th Drake ,went to gary school on 30th n Lawndale. So did my did Grandmother . Neighborhood is different, I miss the old stores like Goldblatts !!! Zayer* store use to be where the discount mall is which I heard their shitting down now
Grew up 31st and Lawndale. If you couldn’t find what you needed on 26th you didn’t need it.
thanks for this video, because I can see the 26 stret, Im from to mexico city, I lived in chicago a few year ago.
One thing about 26th st, why can't they fix the damn potholes?, it's a rough ride saan!
I grew up in that neighborhood. Moved to CA in 83. It was a nice neighborhood back then. I’ve been back to Chicago a couple of times, I have alot of family in the north side, but nobody will go with me to visit the old neighborhood because of the high crime in that area now. Sad. Gangs and shootings have taken over.
I like how they keep their hood nice
I wish we had streets like this in my city.
What city do you live?
@R3DQ22 Wow!!! There is so much hate pouring through you! I am so happy that this guy made this video because I am planning to move there in a week, I am very worried about the gang violence because of statistics. I don't have much money, I am an artist and I am white, I was able to find a place there for an affordable price. This video it is not intended to be negative, rather it is meant to be informative. Take it and run with it and be proud to show others.
Grew up next door Pilsen, we used to go to 26 and California to scream and hassle the convicts as they screamed like little girls.
Once you pass West of Cicero Avenue, its gets better.
I use to go their and it’s not safe here
