Ridley Scott is a great filmmaker, but it think sometimes he doesn’t get the structure and pace right, such as here. I was pretty bored by the pacing, repeating scenes with different perspectives was good but I think there was a better way and pace to do it. The movie worked the best when it was from Jodie Comer’s perspective. She was the best part of this movie that I thought was ok overall, not something I would watch ever again. The Martian will always be my favourite Ridley Scott movie.
Pretty excited especially because of the actors in it(specifically Driver and Comer). And it seems to be like a medieval version of Rashomon (which was about different people telling the story of a rape and murder and each of these perspectives were different a lot like this film it seems).
Jodie Comer really shined in this. I saw it yesterday and her eyes are so powerful. Shes quick and right on mark. I hope she gets a nomination of some sort.
i disagree that the movie would have benefitted from more nuance about the rape. **spoilers** i think the whole point was that even though the rape accusation was unambiguously true, the perpetrator perceived himself as innocent. alongside the flaws shown in matt damon's character's actions, the film's takeaway is an indictment of the male ego.

You have to check out “Killing Eve”, Sean - Comer is phenomenal!!! Totally my pick for the MCU’s Invisible Woman 😅 (I always gotta talk about Marvel hehe)
I think you hit the nail on the head in your discussion of the need for more nuance and ambiguity regarding the rape scene. I was deeply disappointed with this film. Why bother telling a story from three perspectives if the film is going to make the third one so obviously definitive? Renders the first two tellings a waste of time. Could have been a great concept that left audiences with a lot to think about in the me-too age, but instead it's just a straightforward tale of a 700 year-old rape. Technically masterful filmmaking and great acting but a fairly pointless exercise.
I don’t think this was ever about figuring out what the truth was. We all knew Marguerite’s perspective was gonna be the truth. I also strongly disagree with Sean that this movie is about the falling out between the two friends, and that the rape was a catalyst for it. This is a movie about masculinity and how men perceive themselves and women (specifically in that time period, but with some relevance to today). Damon’s perspective showed him as a noble figure, ready to fight for his doting wife’s honor when he learned what happened to her. Driver’s perspective showed a man who believed he was being flirted with and wanting to act on it. With Comer’s perspective, everything is recontextualized. Her “flirting” was just her trying to be friendly to keep her husband happy. Driver’s advances are not playful, they’re creepy. And we also see that Damon’s character isn’t the great guy and loving husband he set himself up to be. All he cared about was his stature. He married her because of the land he’d receive, he never showed her any true affection, resented that she couldn’t give him a child, and when he found out about her rape, he didn’t jump to defend her. He jumped to avenge the insult to his pride. He was actually somewhat disgusted with her for what happened. And then the duel. The only way this woman was able to have her truth recognized was for two men to engage in yet another violent act. When it’s over, we see Damon’s character getting praised for his victory, while the raped and abused woman is just left to walk quietly behind him. The three chapters didn’t solve a mystery. They provided context to make the truth hit even more effectively.
Just got back from watching the film. It was absolutely phenomenal. I loved the three chapter setup, the visuals were stunning, the story was engaging and powerful, and the acting was terrific all around. Loved it!

The way they had film the movie, from the three points of view was something I have never seen done before and caught me off guard, making me more invested in the story. A fantastically well made film from Ridley Scott.
Just saw the movie, thought it was great my only problem is the whole “I’m alone in the castle” scenario. That seemed a little too unbelievable to me even if she’s a minor lady at that.
Actually historically speaking no it wasn’t that unbelievable at the time, half the population had died from plague, people went to war and if a lady had business she took as many people with her as she could to impress. It’s important to know that the quarters of a noble family were separated from the rest of the castle so ther3 were still people in the castle just not in the family quarters.

His body and physical being was not going through the motions of rape. You seem to be unaware of the lengths a set will go to simulate violence and insure the comfort of the actors.
Also if you’re not an actor you don’t understand the mixed emotions and catharsis that goes into acting out villains/horrible characters. It’s also bringing awareness to a situation and putting an impact on an audience. You can play a horrible character and really enjoy it because there’s a lot that goes into acting. From my experience playing terrible disgusting people is a really good way to work through self hate issues or at least get that energy out
