    I drove the new 4S at a Porsche event a weeks ago. It had gobs of torque compared to the old car. Handling was much improved. Options are pricey. My test car stickered at well over $100k.

    10:32 the electronically controlled dash vent. An unbelievable example of form over function. I imagine the genesis of this feature is someone objecting that a vent toggle blemishes the center console.

    Nick, the original Panamera was model years 2010-16, not 2017. The new model is model year 2017, became available in US in April. The old model Turbo handled well and was a beast. The new model tech is overly engineered IMHO and is not intuitive. As u note, it is difficult to find the info u want on the screen especially when driving. It can be confusing. You reviewed a close to base model, and options are $. The 4s seemed pretty underpowered. The Turbo is quick, but by the time you spec it out you are at $180k.

      @avusm395 7 лет назад +1

      Agreed, the V6 versions of the 970 were a little under powered, 4S+ versions were good. On the handling side, the 0.95g my 970 pulls is enough for me most days....for what is basically a luxury car the ride/handling balance is pretty good. The looks are certainly an acquired taste.

    I have to admit I really don't like the piano black everywhere. Seems cheap. Especially piano black plastic indicator stalks, who the hell thought that was a good idea??
    It reminds me of this now-old cheap TV my dad bought years back. It was cheap, from a cheap manufacturer (but hey, does it's job right?) and the screen was surrounded by this big mirror "piano" black plastic. Turns out that shit reflects more light than the screen emits! Almost impossible to watch it. What I want to say - piano black = good as a detail, bad as an overall design philosophy.

    • @fahass2
      @fahass2 7 лет назад

      Odd as piano black trim is considered high end. Even Bentley incorporates it as an option in their cars albeit not a high end option but if it can show up in a Bentley, Audi's, Porsche etc, then it I dunno it seems to be that manufacturers are projecting it as high end interior trim.

  • @phototristan
    @phototristan 7 лет назад +13

    The problem with the flat panel buttons is that it will look atrocious most of the time with fingerprints and dust. They should have went with a matte finish instead, which would be less prone to that.

    • @bennylofgren3208
      @bennylofgren3208 7 лет назад +2

      phototristan The biggest problem is the lack of tactile feedback. You don't want to have to have to take your eyes off the road to look down at the center console whenever you need to adjust something you could actually _feel_ where it was before. This is a monumentally stupid decision by Porsche (not that they are alone - Tesla and others, I'm looking at you), and I am willing to bet that within a year at least one person is going to die in traffic partly because of this decision.

    The electronic buttons are godawful. And Porsche went off the deep end with the amount of buttons years ago. Over engineered since once the mechanicals are perfect (and they are) the engineers wind up with too much time on their hands.

    Hey Nick, about all that gloss black... How durable is it? Do you think it would scratch really easily? It is awfully sandy/gritty out here and it is hard enough keeping paint from getting scratched... Are they glass? Seems like five+ years and they would be a bit hazy, no? Nice review as always! As good as this car is I think the controls are poorly designed, the black plastic looks cheap too. The adjustment of the centre vent is a perfect example of over complicating a simple thing and screwing it up. I hope this is not the future of Porsche, but I'm afraid it is.

    Your criticism of the original Panamera reminds me of how I felt about my 928 back in the day. I owned a 928 back in the 80's and had a love/hate relationship with that car. The 928 handled and ran well, but the quirks and electronics would drive me nuts!

    Not just fingerprints - that high gloss piano black trim will be covered in unsightly scratches before you know it. Features like those air vent controls are just technology for technology's sake - they add cost and complexity and are less functional and user-friendly than manual controls. I generally hate all touch controls in modern cars - give me buttons and knobs any day. Pity the poor owner who buys one of these cars used when all this shit starts to break.

  • @sackman848

    Great video, I love hearing that it has been improved over the last get. But I wish you would spend a little bit more time comparing the car to its competitors; if it was your money, which one would you buy and why? Panamera 4, A7, or any of the others?

  • @fkporsche1
    @fkporsche1 7 лет назад +1

    I agreed. I like the way new Panamera drive and solid ride german sport sedan quality. The new center vent is a very disappointment. It ruins the functionality of the climate controls. I have a couple of Porsches. But I won't get this Panamera till they fix this awkward vent operation. As we live in Southern California sunny warm weather. A/C Climate control is crucial for passengers. It's way over engineer on this center vent. What are the Porsche engineers thinking. It should not be in production till it refinement. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅
    Nick - could you send me information on your Porsche contact. I want to order a Porsche GT3 touring model.

    Thanks Nick for the video.
    I agree regarding interior comments, I'm old school n going to miss the physical analogue gauges.
    Every car maker now is bringing out digital gauges, as we can only thank Mercedes-Benz for this.
    The air vent in the center console is over engineered, n will drive people mad.
    In fact, the turbo models have exactly the same air vent set-up in the rear seats, crazy idea hate it.
    High gloss black piano buttons seems to be the latest fab, will keep you busy cleaning your finger prints.
    The body shape is a huge improvement n should sell more cars in this generation.

Piano-black and knurled alloy switches just like the E-Class (which I couldn't get out of fast enough): cheap, tacky, impossible to use without taking your eyes off the road. And the central air-vent joke... May the inventor of "piano-black"anything suffer for their sins.

  • @decemberelf

    I wonder how many people which are nagging about piano black plastic are actually going to consider buying a new Panamera? Let's be real here, Porsche has over 50 years worth of history selling very expensive cars. Do you think they've suddenly made a bad choice? Oh, please. I'm sure there are years of market research, and statistics about what actual potential buyers want. If you gather a hundred of best Porsche salesmen and ask them whether people want matte or piano black finish, I'm sure it would be the latter one.
    _Don't get me wrong, I'm also sure that 992 will have plenty of matte options, because 911 is more sporty and practical, Panamera is a luxury limo._

This link to the cockpit layout of an old Boeing 757. The different types and styles of buttons and switches which although look like a dogs breakfast (sorry Tui) were actually made so for purpose - so the pilot could find them by touch/feel. The interior is horrible. But think about it. When has Porsche been a leader in interiors? Never. MB, Audi, Lexus, Volvo, even infinity is much better. Porsche leather is hard and feels cheap, the controls are non intuitive with terrible ergonomics. Steering wheel are the best - part of the driving experience at which Porsche has no equal.

    i am really not a fan of the piano black in the middle and the no button layout - it is prettier, but it will be really a pain, not userfriendly and always dirty..

    FCA group still has an open law suits due to a similar gear selector. I believe recall some actor being run over ?

    My OCD is in bits from all the piano! Love the new style, but white is grim.

    The more "gloss anything" in a car is a chance for glare. I hope it's not an issue.

    Ugh, I HATE all these touch screen interfaces in cars. There something to be said about having a physical button. In my current car, I can work the vast majority of the car systems solely by feel, never having to take my eyes off the road.
    And don't get my started on high glass, piano black, especially in touch interface areas. It will smudge up, and even with microfiber, it WILL develop scratches. Why not implement something lower luster?

    With my new S4 being under the same Volkswagen umbrella, why couldn't Audi have done the same type of center screen as this instead of being perched up on top of the dash?!?!

    I still like the feeling of pushing physical buttons better. Big fan of the latest iDrive from BMW. No touch screen but easy and intuitive to use!

      And the central vent operation in the new Panamera is indeed just absolutely ridiculous.

    Can't help but think the interior just seems like a cost cutting measure.

    this car needs some better wheels and some lowering springs.
