    Your criticism of the original Panamera reminds me of how I felt about my 928 back in the day. I owned a 928 back in the 80's and had a love/hate relationship with that car. The 928 handled and ran well, but the quirks and electronics would drive me nuts!
    I suppose I'll always be a 911 kind of guy...

  • @phototristan
    @phototristan 7 лет назад +14

    The problem with the flat panel buttons is that it will look atrocious most of the time with fingerprints and dust. They should have went with a matte finish instead, which would be less prone to that.

    • @bennylofgren3208
      @bennylofgren3208 7 лет назад +3

      phototristan The biggest problem is the lack of tactile feedback. You don't want to have to have to take your eyes off the road to look down at the center console whenever you need to adjust something you could actually _feel_ where it was before. This is a monumentally stupid decision by Porsche (not that they are alone - Tesla and others, I'm looking at you), and I am willing to bet that within a year at least one person is going to die in traffic partly because of this decision.

    Thanks Nick for the video.
    I agree regarding interior comments, I'm old school n going to miss the physical analogue gauges.
    Every car maker now is bringing out digital gauges, as we can only thank Mercedes-Benz for this.
    The air vent in the center console is over engineered, n will drive people mad.
    In fact, the turbo models have exactly the same air vent set-up in the rear seats, crazy idea hate it.
    High gloss black piano buttons seems to be the latest fab, will keep you busy cleaning your finger prints.
    The body shape is a huge improvement n should sell more cars in this generation.

    I'm a big fan of Porsche's new interior design. It's stylish, modern and user friendly, accept for that silly center vent. I prefer physical buttons to this touch sensitive switch gear, but it actually does seem to work well. I'd definitely consider buying one of these.

    Great review Nick. The piano black "buttons" will be the biggest gripe buyers have with the new model for sure. • @ChuckJ1944
    @ChuckJ1944 7 лет назад

    Nice review Nick but, I hope it doesn't migrate down to the 911. 911s are designed to keep your head outside because things are supposed to be happening fast around you. One needs to be able to adjust things without looking inside. A few years ago you didn't even have to look at the rev meter because you knew by the sound what the RPMs were. Now it's so quiet, you tell me Nick if you can hit the red line within a couple hundred RPM without looking at it. If the 911 gets this approach turning the defroster on or adjusting the ac provides distraction that can put you in a trick fast.

  • @azaz911c
    @azaz911c 7 лет назад

    10:32 the electronically controlled dash vent. An unbelievable example of form over function. I imagine the genesis of this feature is someone objecting that a vent toggle blemishes the center console.

  • @CarGuy11

    If they went to the trouble to engineer the power vent, is it at least tied into the memory setup for individual drivers??

    Hey Nick, about all that gloss black... How durable is it? Do you think it would scratch really easily? It is awfully sandy/gritty out here and it is hard enough keeping paint from getting scratched... Are they glass? Seems like five+ years and they would be a bit hazy, no? Nice review as always! Wondering what Tui would think... Albert is a bit of a push over... F

    Nick, the original Panamera was model years 2010-16, not 2017. The new model is model year 2017, became available in US in April. The old model Turbo handled well and was a beast. The new model tech is overly engineered IMHO and is not intuitive. As u note, it is difficult to find the info u want on the screen especially when driving. It can be confusing. You reviewed a close to base model, and options are $. The 4s seemed pretty underpowered. The Turbo is quick, but by the time you spec it out you are at $180k.

    Nick, I have a filming question for you. Your front-facing camera that hangs from the moonroof (which looks like a GoPro, right?), how is it that you don't get a lot of white overexposure coming from the windshield? You can see both the inside and outside of the car very well and I haven't been able to do that. Thanks.

    Erudite but still real. His lack of driving enthusiasm for the Panamera is overwhelming.
    I have to say the older multitude of switches was a more direct experience than the new designer hidden style. Probably more usable at speed, also.

    Thanks for doing the Panamera and comparing it to what an earlier version offers is useful.
    Here is Australia the prices are eye watering as you know, so will not be tempted to buy an oldie.
    I am 6'4" so head clearance is important information.
    An old off road measure is to ensure you have a sideways (not hand thickness measure) between the roof and your head, so a rollover won't break your neck.
    Not that a Panamera would ever flip, would it?
    Wish list
    - could you befriend a Bentley continental (2 door rag roof) owner and for us and review it? Pretty Please
    Remember how much you loved those Bentley sedan seats...

    Such an amazing daily. I can afford an older one but the 2010-12s I can afford make me nervous for maintenance and the pig on a skateboard thing.

    • @henningptr2400
      @henningptr2400 7 лет назад

      The maintenance costs are actually not too bad "enginewise" atleast (have seen some 250.000+ cars that had no changes beside the wearing parts and fluids). The pig on the skateboard thing is actually nonsense in my eyes. The base model is underpowered and has some bodyroll but if you get an "s or a "4s you are fine or just look for a car with pdcc which stands for porsche dynamic chassis control it basically neutralizes all body roll !

    Great review, Nick. It seems like the center vent is something that will be set, then forgotten. I don't readjust my vents as I enter the car each time. Come to think of it, I really don't readjust anything. My key remembers my settings. Porsche tie quite a few settings to the presets. Same with the Panamera?

    I have to admit I really don't like the piano black everywhere. Seems cheap. Especially piano black plastic indicator stalks, who the hell thought that was a good idea??
    It reminds me of this now-old cheap TV my dad bought years back. It was cheap, from a cheap manufacturer (but hey, does it's job right?) and the screen was surrounded by this big mirror "piano" black plastic. Turns out that shit reflects more light than the screen emits! Almost impossible to watch it. What I want to say - piano black = good as a detail, bad as an overall design philosophy.

    • @fahass2
      @fahass2 7 лет назад

      Odd as piano black trim is considered high end. Even Bentley incorporates it as an option in their cars albeit not a high end option but if it can show up in a Bentley, Audi's, Porsche etc, then it I dunno it seems to be that manufacturers are projecting it as high end interior trim.

    Hey Nick, fellow CT resident here. I enjoyed a bunch of your 911 videos. You're an interesting fella to watch. Just a couple of questions: 1-Do you love Porsche more than ever? especially given the problems you had a couple of years back (I would have left them) 2- I want to buy one but would not ever dare spending so much on one. Having watched a lot of other videos in RUclips, what are your thoughts on the consensus view that the prior generation (the 997 I think) is the true sports car experience, and that the 991 (albeit its power and great enhancements) has really changed in identify to more of a GT? Any thoughts? Thanks, Ed

    Hello Nick. I just put an order for 2018 Panamera 4 E-Hybrid Executive last month back home(China), but this week the news came that starting this month all imported hybrid vehicles has to do an extra durability test before they are allowed on the Chinese streets. On VMS my car is showing a delay of 2 months. I am not in a hurry to get the car, and there are 2 options the dealer are pushing now; 1. Change the order to a Panamera 4 Executive and save a bit of money 2. Buy an Canadian imported 4S for the same money (I am paying $290,000 roughly). Love to hear your thoughts on this one.

      I was at my dealer on friday. I was 80% certain that I wanted the volcano grey paint. Then the seller showed me a car that was tucked away in the back and it had the midnight blue. It was perfect. My body tingled when I saw it. It had the green callipers and that looked so good. I will keep them green as it makes the car that more special. Mine is also due in January.

    I'll make a wager with you Nick! I say the new Panamera 4S model will outsell this base model! Gonna bite?

    The more "gloss anything" in a car is a chance for glare. I hope it's not an issue.

    Ugh, I HATE all these touch screen interfaces in cars. There something to be said about having a physical button. In my current car, I can work the vast majority of the car systems solely by feel, never having to take my eyes off the road.
    And don't get my started on high glass, piano black, especially in touch interface areas. It will smudge up, and even with microfiber, it WILL develop scratches. Why not implement something lower luster?

    With my new S4 being under the same Volkswagen umbrella, why couldn't Audi have done the same type of center screen as this instead of being perched up on top of the dash?!?!

    You are right about the center air vent. Pure overkill and stupid. That's it - Im not buying one...
