No. You don't need to remove the pulley. You put the wrench on the pulley bolt and you press like you are tightening the bolt. The whole pulley mechanism will rotate down and allow you to remove the belt.

So you mean this can be done without removing the fan?... What bmw model and year is this please..

Just on some models and only with electrical fan! This was Bmw e46 (320i)
