- This is a breakdown of the easiest way to avoid your kayak flipping upside down. It is a small change but a big output difference especially if you can apply it in multiple ways.

Really good advice and something I have been focusing on. I call it “positive paddling”.
Love that!
This is great advice. I recently picked up a tip from a long time kayaker friend who said to paddle the front third of your boat. This keeps you upright and aggressive and really helps. A slightly different way of saying the same thing
I dig it, that is a great way to express what I am getting at. Thanks for watching.
Definitely true. The hard bit is to: Not Panic, and KEEP Paddling!
Hopefully improvers will pick up on that need to keep paddling! It's easy to forget in the heat of the moment.
A side exercise is to stand in the water (swimming pools are nice for this) and practice the pulling and pushing of water with your paddle, along with the transition to low and high braces for support while actively leaning over to the support side.
You can do a dozen in a minute, as there is no boat recovery needed, just the effective action of the arms and blade in the water. Water at navel height for low braces, and water at armpit height for high braces. There is no fear of falling in - you are already there!
Good stuff and thanks for your videos. On my last session last year someone suggested to me to take a stroke going through a wave so that you have 3 points of contact with the water (bow, stern, paddle), rather than waiting with paddle level so I could take a stroke on whatever side is needed. Made sense, and this just reinforces it. Hope to be able to get out on the river again soon. Also struck me that this is perhaps 'proactive paddling' more than offensive. Keeps you in control.
One of the best kayaking instructional videos I have ever seen. It is simple, straight forward, and easy to grasp. It essentially shows us how to use the tools we already have, as a means to prevent a flip, rather than having to try to remember specialty strokes and execute them perfectly at the exact right moment. Forward strokes are by far the strokes we do most often and practice makes perfect. So if you can use a stroke you practice a lot and don't have to think about, you will execute that much faster and that much more effectively. It is so obvious that a forward stroke will stabilize the boat that we don't even think about it. Its like "that's too simple". But simple is usually best. Thanks for sharing this. You will be responsible so helping prevent thousands of unnecessary flips and possibly even save a life or two.
If it stops just one or two I’ll be happy! Thanks for checking it out!!!
This is excellent advice, I remember my instructor saying best brace is a good forward paddle stroke.
Usually won't make things worse. usually! Thanks for checking out the video!
Thw first time ever kayaking in my life I did it in 32 degrees in the middle of nowhere in the Appalachians the second time was I'ma frozen lake can't wait for the third thanks for the tips
Thanks so much for this, it makes so much sense. Our instructors call this PLF - paddle like flippityflip :)
PLF. I dig it!
“If you think you’re going upside down, take a forward stroke” one thing leads to another and you do a sick eardip.
Ethan Kayak “one thing leads to another “😂😂😂🤣
It’s interesting that this same advice applies to motorcycles. In many situations you are most stable under forward power. Don’t panic snd try to correct the tilt directly, just goose it.
That and bicycles are the analogy I usually make whilst reading this concept.
Dude!!!!! Thank you so much for posting this video.
Thanks for checking it out!!
Beauty! Thank you for putting this out there. I've believed this for a long time ~ feels good to hear it from you
Thanks for watching!! Tell your friends, it will help them too,!!
Thanks for the video something I will add and practice more when I am out there.
Thanks for watching. Fingers crossed it helps
I never really thought about it that way but I will be implementing this because I don’t like swimming 👍
It can help in most situations. In my experience at least.
I just realized that is what I have been doing a lot. I still don't think it will work in all situations, but it does a lot when I am river running. Going over a drop down a chute it is a different game for me. Even then it is more a stroke rather than a typical brace.
For sure, remember there is not many things in kayak that will work every time (except look where you wanna go which is underused IMO). Thanks for checking out the video!
All in all, love this video. Especially in slower/spicier boats this comes in handy
Ethan Kayak it could be applied to all types of boat though, sea kayak, newbie etc kayakers. Etc etc.
Yah I would totally try and do this! But I don’t have a Kayak Nor have I ever done it looks like a lot of fun though
Thanks for watching. It should help when you do try kayaking eventually!!!
Is funny. If been 3 times im lucky that my brother has two kyacks the first time i went ok be honest i was terrified i didnt have any lessons at all or tips and was more nervous than when i skydived 😂😂😂 but im really enjoying it now. Do it if you get a chance is so peaceful. I only go when its nice and calm at the moment.
Great tip. One I’ve never thought about before.
Brian Krueger that’s for watching!! Hope it helps you
I thought you were going to talk about an ear dip as your boat's about to go over, sort of like finishing your roll keeping your head down- not picking up your head. Not sure if I'm being very clear. But YOU were clear😎
Yeah, when in doubt, paddle it out is good advice.
MoabDaveRules ear dip maybe another video. Maybe. I’ve got a few thoughts on building up to them.
@@SethAshworth yeah, its only been working for me the last 2 or 3 years. Not consistently either.
Yep! I still meet club high brace die hards who disagree with me when I tell them to do this though!
Changing minds one at a time I guess
Great video
Thanks for watching! Let me know if you need help on any other kayaking topics
This is so true
Thanks for checking it out!
What's the deal with your paddle? Home made breakdown or is that some skunk works type stuff from Werner. Love your videos. Thanks for posting.
Greg Eizans I did used to have a sweet werner two piece powerhouse with some tape in the middle so I didn’t have to take apart constantly to empty it but it broke recently at the joint 🙁. They did offer me a discount on the replacement but canadian dollar is not good for buying stuff from the states right now. Exploring other options at the moment. The paddle in this video though is just a regular Werner Sho Gun with some eléctrical tape on the shaft.
your Z3 colour is pretty awesome
I think so too!
I'm getting really good at self rescue some days😂
That isn't a bad thing either, I just prefer not having to. Maybe i should practice that more though.
Do you provide a money back guarantee if I now flip?
All my free advice has a money back guarantee
@@SethAshworth, if you had real confidence, it would be a double your money back guarantee.
I am so confident I would be happy to double the money back guarantee. On my free advice.
Thank you Seth! Just had all my kids sit down and watch that with me so they could hear it from somewhere else besides from my mouth lol....
I hope your kids listen. Straight up made my day btw
Haha I mean.. Duh. :P It's definitely good for new paddlers to know though. When in doubt, paddle it out! ;)
I thinks it’s applicable to all skill levels really
Too much talk
Thanks for trying. Hope to see you in another one.
