  • Here is an amazing A1 at the end of Morkanjac's Tebe Poem that really demonstrates the power of Alexander Ort. From a 1996 performance in Slovenia by the State Academic Capella of St Petersburg under Vladislav Chernushenko.

One of the few oktavist who sing with a high level of efficiency.

First off, gotta say that Ort is a tall guy! What I would also like to say about Ort is why hes my favorite!
So, the first thing is his tone quality. It is such a rarity to have a bright tone quality for that low of a voice, but his tone is absolutely gorgeous in all registers. The other thing too is, unlike some oktavists, Ort has a very good sense of blending in with the choir (I was gonna say ensemble because Im a Tuba player) and it just amazes me. He has such awareness in the choir and knows when to sing out or not, unlike some oktavists I feel that are always going for the volume and standing out. Yes, I love hearing oktavists, but when they blend in very nicely its just so magical and satisfying. Then theres his range, which is not something to laugh at. I hear him sing pretty high in his range and Im always impressed because he has such a low voice, who would think he could sing up to D4 or higher and sound great? His lows are very powerful and can still blend with a choir or sing powerful chants that shake rooms!
Overall, Ort is wonderful! His range is exceptionally balanced with a great sense of ensemble skills and a wonderful tone. That’s why he’s my favorite, and I know it’s ridiculously long but just had to get it out of my system since I love listening to Ort. May he Rest In Peace….

He probably learned to blend because he sang in a church choir

This is pure gold! I'm always happy to see/hear Ort. And that G#1 at the end was magical.

      It was note A1

Very good compressed A1 at the end. That is about my limit for projection and must compress in the same way to get that projection. I can guarantee, 95% of the low bass singers on RUclips couldn't sing an unamplified A1 like this. I can do an A1 in a choir setting, but nothing like I just witnessed in this video... pure magic!

Вечная память, Александр. / Requiem aeternam, Alexander. From Slovenia, been there. heard that: must find somewhere a Slovene folksong recording you ended with a thunderous, yet well, well balanced G1. Sorry, we added that note intentionally to the sheet-music we handed to your choir into performance. We could not resist, but you filled our churches with never-before-heard vocal sounds. Thanks. And your Воскресе́ние Христо́во / Easter - you & the choir celebrated far away from your home, here in our country. Songs of homesickness, profound yet optimistic.

After decades of enjoying this tradition I ask myself now why it is that this culture is dying. Does anyone know? To where has the appreciation for such music retreated?
