- I've made a better burner for my DIY home furnace/foundry. My previous burner was 'ok' (quite slow and VERY NOISY)... so i really wanted a better solution... So i made "the little burner that could"! SPOILER ALERT - IT'S BLOOMING AMAZING!
I'm still using Diesel as i don't have a ready supply of used motor or veg oil but i reckon this thing could match any propane burner out there! Its also cheap to run (i do tests to find the costs at the end).
I've binned the siphon nozzle burner and i'm just squirting the diesel neat into a red hot chamber now - no nozzle required! i use a modified Dyson vacuum cleaner as the air supply - it makes an awesome blower!
And you know those damned medals i'm always going on about???... I TRY TO CAST A TEST MEDAL as a proof of concept, and a drafted letter plate too :)
I also do a couple of experiments: How fast can it get hot? and i also work out the cost of running it.

Now that was an attention grabbing intro!! You went the right way with a fuel Pump. Gravity is more trouble than it's worth and the pump gives you much more control and stability. Your fuel flow will vary at those low rates with how much fuel you have in the tank and the resulting lift as well as ambient temp so don't be surprised if you have to tweak it. The burner is good too. You could actually just have a pipe for air and fuel feed going into the furnace and do away with the burner all together. Light your fire in the furnace, add fuel and bring the air and fuel up slowly and it will burn well in the furnace. This will give you more heat and efficency but of course it's working perfectly well the way it is.
You can cut your costs by adding used veg oil to your Diesel. With that pump I wouldn't go over 50% unless you are outside and it's hot or if new oil is cheaper than Diesel there you could use that.

I like your design because you can throtle flame by adjusting fuel inlet pressure by way of increasing fuel flow and vice versa.Adjusting fan flow as well regulates well the flame power.More power and congratulations on your research works.

Hi there. Where this burner is of real benefit is when the furnace is cold. The ability to start up without being super smoky is great. Once the furnace is up to temp, injecting the diesel down the tube with the air and straight into the furnace will have the same effect. A lot of people start their furnaces on gas to heat them up then turn on the oil once it is hot enough to flash the fuel to vapor, if one does this you can achieve the same clean burn. By using the pre burner some energy will be wasted once the furnace is up and running. If you were to make a sleeve for your air tube assembly then you could remove the pre igniter and put the air and fuel tube directly into the furnace when up to temp. Just a few ideas you might want to try anyway. Nice casting by the way.

Great video!!! I tried this today with a 12 liter diving bottle. Used 100% veggie oil and found it hard to reach operating temperature. I also used propane to preheat the thing. The blow out using propane when litting was quite scary. When I finally got 1 meter high flames I was quite overwhelmed! I think it might be too powerful. When trying to reignite the hot tank using propane I only got explosion 💥 and flameout. Think I will not use propane and just preheat with diesel and wood sticks. And electric pump to control the flow better. Thank you!
That thing works like those pulse jet engines. It is an incredible and scary burner. Nice job.

Wow! how did I miss your channel. This is awesome. I have been developing a waste oil heater for my shop that works exactly like a regular oil burner. I believe I am going to use the drip method.
Welcome John and thanks! It’s a super simple setup. It just needs a little heat to get going. I don’t use wood anymore just a few bits of cloth wetted with some diesel, once the air is gently going it creates enough heat to get going nicely.

I purchase 1500 lt at a time and it's (give or take) about 42p lt. smallest worthwhile quantity is 105 lt (a steel drum).

My foundry temperature only rises 1 or 2 degrees over the course of a 2 hour casting sesion (and yes in the winter I wish it were a lot more).

I use pinch dogs to hold cope +drag together,and weight sand if pattern is high in horizontal surface area.It's surprising how many run-outs actually fill out-just when you think you've lost the casting!Cuprostatic pressure about 4 times aluminostatic pressure.

What you have is a crude jet engine. Air goes in front add fuel and get it burning and flame comes out the back. :) No surprise diesel would get you a lot more heat. Propane is just a lot easier to use but makes a lot less heat per pound of fuel.
I have watched several of these oil burner videos and the crude way of lighting them. It seems that you could wire in a glow plug into the burner to light it. That way you may not have to worry about burning your eyebrows off.

Awesome video! One of the best on the subject I have seen. Great charts and tips. I will be utilizing all of your ideas. I do have a few suggestions that might help. You read how everyone talks about vortex.... Changing the angle of your blower end [ the foundry end] a little upwards and maybe even add a plate to direct the flame in a vortex direction instead of the side of the crucible might help?

All your drill needs in order to be functional are a few small features ground into the cutting faces. I used to work for a company that made custom drills end mills and form tools, and I would love to show you a couple things. t\Too much for a youtube comment though, I'm not one of those guys haha.
Great video!!!!! Loved the charts at the end of the video. I now know that you will be melting and pouring iron very shortly. One thing I did see that your oil consumption is a little high, my burner uses 10 liters per hour to melt 14 Kgs of cast iron.

Arduino - would be quite simple to program the arduino to output a specific ramp up voltage/flow for specific materials.
Im going to try this burner method on my foundry. Looks like you get good repeatable results and nice high temperatures.

It really is super easy to use, the fuel pump makes life so easy. co-incidentally i'm playing with an arduino right now at my desk (different project) - interesting idea, definitly doable but i'd be a quite worried that i'd leave it alone too long... and then end up with a burnt down shed!
Why does the mixer pot (gas bottle) make me feel most uncomfortable when it glows red hot?
Are you using compressed air to blow off you moulds or still using the hand thingy
yeah it's only red hot metal :p yeah the hand thingy went missing - weirdly i think it was "stolen". i'll show the grainy "CCTV" footage in the next video... so i'm using the compressor now (much better) :)
I built one of those Artful Bodger burners years ago, and it was terrifyingly hot when it ran well. (But I often struggled to get it to run well.) I hope you ended up lining your burner body with castable refractory.
What was the size of input and output tube on that propane tank burner?
After this much time, have you tried waste oil in your pump? Almost anything can variable pump diesel fuel? but clean waste oil?
I might make one of these to keep my van warm.. I can point the jet flame out the side door.

awesome content! have you considered running the pump at a constant voltage and then using a needle valve to control the flow rate?
i did consider it but as i had to buy a small power supply for the pump anyway i just got the variable supply instead. very pleased i did it works like a dream. i did have a needle valve on my previous iteration of the burner and while it worked it, didnt give me a reliable way to know the exact rate of fuel i'm burning. :)

I would suggest insulating tank you use to vaporize the fuel so you can get better efficiency, but a couldn't garuntee that the metal wouldn't melt. If you preheat your fuel old fry oil might be a good cheap source of fuel.
I think I have found the three extra pieces you used to regulate your burner, fuel pump, pump regulator, and fan regulator. Now I am probably going to need a hand in wiring it all up. I think I wasted money and bought a siphon nozzle but I intend to use a blower and not a compressor. Thanks for your video. Your links didn't work for me because I am in the USA.

get your hands on a bouncy castle inflator, they're cheap and work great ass forge blowers
Just an observation, there is such a tool called an Artist Mouth Atomizer. Fitted just like the oil drip pipe except upside down, to get the paint running you keep the pipes perpendicular to one another (and adjust the "oil" pipe unit in/out) Till you get it automizing properly. The artist would blow on the other larger pipe just like your setup. I realize you are using gravity, but if you did this and used gravity as in your example I think you would get better optimization (You may not get the drip drip drip effect in other words). It would probably work better than having an angle towards the flared end of your Burner.
Note: being you are not using an air tank it would not make much of a difference except perhaps the fluctuations. With that said I don't think it needs to be angled.... Just an observation I've had.
What temperatures were you getting at the different fuel delivery rates?
Is the pump voltage in metric volts or imperial volts?

Thank you! Honestly I think sky’s the limit. If you keep upping the diesel I’m sure it could melt iron if the furnace insulation is good (mine is non existent by the way).
@@JulianMakes Thanks Julian, That is very encouraging. I am looking for ~1,500-1,600C for clay fission. I can do it with a wood/charcoal mix, but it is hard to keep the fueling up. Oil should be so much easier.
From the look of your furnace chamber's thick wall, I would have thought that it had a lot of insulation? Did you put perlite or vermiculite in the mix as I do? Very funny start to the video. I have had some similar experiences with tiny fan-boosted stick stoves, but have never captured the smoke rings on camera. Tim

What if you run the air line near the flame to heat it before combining with the oil.
I like the way you think joseph! Unfortunately the flow of air is pretty vast on this blower, the temp would only go up a little if some huge radiator type deal was heating it (i think anyway), also, counter intuitively colder air has more O2 in it (more dense) it more than makes up for its lower temp with a better hotter burn. To be honest this thing throws out so much heat already! I actually need to upgrade it soon, its almost burnt itself to ruin :)

The vapouring chamber is getting red hot. Could the interior wall of it be insulated like the furnace to conserve heat and make it touch safe ? Or would the interior of the chamber not get hot enough ? Does the casing glowing red hot play a vital role in the efficiency of the burner ?

Thanks John! I think insulating the chamber would be a good idea, i think it could only help vaporise the diesel more. Not sure about your final question, the diesel needs to be very hot to vaporise well but how hot I don’t know. Thanks for your comment :)
Can I ask you a little about the power supply for this fuel pump? I live in the USA and I’m not an electricity guy really so I’m not sure what I need to be looking at for a compatible power supply. You got something with a digital voltage display? Does the amperage need to be of a certain threshold or is it just a direct plug into home power with a dial/potentiometer on it? Thank you!
Google ‘variable voltage power supply’ I got one of those. They might say buck boost on them. It’s run from a power brick. Good luck!

Hey Julian, are you reducing your fuel line from 1/4" to 1/8" copper refrigerator tubing? Or are you using 1/4" copper tubing?

Hi Eric! I use a 3d printer to make my molds. As long as there is some side slope (draft) so you can pull it from the sand without breaking the sand, it works well. I like 8% draft but if you are beginning I’d try 15%.

Dear the higher the voltage in pump means more fuel flow so increases in flame intensity?
Yes exactly. More voltage mean more fuel which means more energy in to the furnace.
If you insulate the combustion chamber it will transfer more heat into the furnace.

@@JulianMakes just some stuff I learned when I was forced to learn thermodynamics. Overall a great design though and I think I'm going to go with something along these lines for a shop heating furnace. However with my design I'll need the combustion chamber to come apart for cleaning from time to time. Synthetic oil leaves a ton of solids and soot.

I have a similar oven but I don't understand why the diesel I put in it is difficult to ignite. I live in Europe, is our diesel different? I don't know! but your diesel ignites rather easily contrary to mine. I am obliged to heat my diesel to bring it to the ignition point before injecting air into the oven. how do you solve this problem?
The diesel must enter a very hot place in order to easily achieve ignition. Im in Europe too. This is why once a small wood fire is lit in the burner chamber, the drips of diesel entering instantly combust. This creates more heat which helps combust the next bit of diesel. Basically heat heat heat.

Try using an electric leaf blower. Put a reastat to control the speed of the blower. I used used engine oil and the leaf blower and melted about a gallon of aluminum in about 15 minutes
How much draft on the letters?
i think 10 to 12 degrees i can get upto 15degrees but sometimes the software just dies, still at least i found something that works (sort of)! hooray!

hi doc i dont use propane. it's diesel, so it's just fuel hose

why not get a clicky pump, designet for diesel rv heater?. they can run realy slow.

haha yeah honestly though it's probbaly half as loud as the old one with the compressor going, i couldnt even talk over that lot going :) i'm having sound issues getting the levels all the same (basically i've been rushing the setting up - but i plan on being a bit more steady and professional with it now so hopefully sound should be better :)

Amazing medals. Please wear gloves and long sleeves while welding. The light given off by the arc is 7x brighter then the sun, it can cause "sun burns" very fast. Very unhealthy for your skin.
