All rights reserved to Nintendo for the Pokemon names and drawings.
Big thank you to Poképédia for listing the resources used to make this video (list of Pokemons, drawings, name etymology): www.pokepedia.fr/Liste_des_Pok%C3%A9mon_de_la_premi%C3%A8re_g%C3%A9n%C3%A9ration
I didn't detail the words behind every single Pokemon name, you will find more information over there for those I didn't talk about.
Also it's "Pikachu" not "Pikatchu", sorry buddy!

Something trivial on offer, most of them should be quite obvious but hey, it's good to know:
I've never known any Pokemon outside Pikachu. This is my first time listening and I'm typing it real-time, hence if I misinterpret any of this I apologise :))
      "Draco" is Latin for Dragon
"Carapuce" may have come from "Carapace", which is the scientific name of the shell of a Turtle
"Raticate" may have come from the word "Eradicate", similar to "Wipe out"
"Vulpix" comes from the scientific name for the fox family, "Vulpus"
"Nosferapti" is from a silent film about a vampire of the same name
"Oddish" may be a portmanteau of "Odd" and "Radish"
"Rafflesia" is also one of the world's largest flowers alongside the Titan Aurum
"Paras" possibly from the word "Parasite"
IMO Psyduck looks more like a platypus than a duck, but it's Pokemon so it doesn't really matter
"Primeape" may be a portmanteau of "Primate" and "Ape" (which are ALMOST the same thing)
"Abra-cadabra" well, just listen to children on Halloween
"Gravalanch" might have been influenced by the word "avalanche" as well?
"Ponyta" sounds like "Bonita" from Spanish which means pretty
"Doduo" may be from "Dodo" which is a type of extinct giant pigeon from the Pacific Islands
"Seel" is a combination of "Seal" and "Eel",
while "Dewgong" is from "Dugong", a relative to the Manatee (both are Sea Cows); one has a boomerang-shaped tail while one has a semicircular tail
"Grimer" is a play on "grime" while "Muk" is a play on "Muck" which is wet and sticky dirt
"Ecto" is a prefix to designate "external things" while "plasma" is the remains of blood without the red blood cells in them, so "Ectoplasma" = "body fluids outside the body"??
The "Lee" in "Kicklee" and "Hitmonlee" may reference Bruce Lee, a Kungfu star from Hong Kong? The "Chan" in "Hitmonchan" is probably Jackie Chan, so the English name will become "HIT MONster LEE"
"Tangela" is from the word "Tangle"
"Kangaskhan" is possible a combination of "Kangaroo" and Ghengis Khan" (Mongolian Conqueror)
"Seadra" is a portmanteau of "Sea" and "Hydra" (Mythological waterborne monster, Greek)
"Pyroli" has the part "Pyro" in it, which is a prefix for anything related to fire
"Amonita" is a pun on "Ammonite" which are a group of extinct sea creatures looking very similar to what the Pokemon looks like
"Ptera"+"Aerodactyl" = "Pterodactyl" which is the name for flying dinosaurs

I really enjoy hearing the different language names for Pokémon because it's clear that they've taken the time to preserve the "spirit" of each one but still have a fun flavour to it that works in each language, even if that means slightly altering the etymology of the name.

25:32 is my favourite part of the video: your visible disgust at the name ‘Geodude’.
For myself, I really liked the names Reptincel, Chenipan and, of course, Rattfratz, though I *love* that the legendary birds have Ancient Gods incorporated into their names in French* ; really emphasises their mythical nature all the more.
This was a fascinating insight into the French names for Pokémon, as well as the French words which informed their construction, and I’m very much looking forward to a follow-up video for the other generations as well; thank you for taking the time to make this!
*on a related note, I realised only recently that the English names for them included the Spanish 'Uno', 'Dos' and 'Tres'...

I hope you do all the generations in the future. This is great. I love Pokemon and you have a very calming voice.

Could you perhaps do this for other Pokémon generations? This was a nice video

Aww the look of pure confusion when looking at some of the English words was so cute lmao

Great video, my French is very limited but couldn’t the “fort” in Coconfort also mean strong since it is protected? Just an observation

Much like you teach us, we can teach you! I'm sure someone else as said this but I'm too lazy to read the comments lol. You pronounced Charmander - Charizard like Karmander, with K sound, but it is actually tch like cheese or chime. Char is a word that means like to burn something. Hope this helps!

Glad I found your videos. This is a really cool one. Also like how your accent is French, but pronouncing certain words leads to a British or Australian one.
