The Walima (ولِيمہ) is the formal reception hosted by the husband and wife and officially makes the marriage public. It is typically a huge celebration with many relatives and as well as invited guests of both families in attendance.
It publicly announces that the couple are lawful for each other and have taken on the responsibilities that each has for the other. There is no ceremony for the nikah per se: witnesses, contract signing. But the union of couples and their families is a joyous occasion and important to them and their community. The walimah celebrates this as friends, family members, and the community pray for the new couples. It is of such importance that to go is one of the rights that Muslims have over each other.
