the natural approach is the best way to acquire a new language or anything you want to learn. everything starts with a process until you get the final result. this is the way i learned to speak english and now i am learning to play my violin.
GREAT clip. GREAT story telling. Totally pragmatic. Just like the English language itself. Really GREAT. Thank you soooo much. It takes a lot of work and thought to have a flow like this. GREAT visual illustration. The vibrant music keep you awake all the way thru. Oh ... regarding "This method is for beginners". No. It is not. Krashen's Natural Orders of Language Acquisition is based on how the brain works. On the three stages of skill acquisition. "I talk English" is a skill. Not just knowledge. This skill Acquisition approach can be (and is) used to acquire any skill. Not only a language. Krashen's Acquisition .. is also in line with Vygotsky's ZPD (the learning zone .. not too easy, not too difficult). Great theory. Great approach .. to life .. in general .. at any stage of skill development. At any time. At any place. GREAT clip. One of the best things on the whole World web about language as a next language. I use it all the time in my work as an ESL/ EFL teacher. Thank you so much Simon. GREAT JOB.
Your comment was exceedingly flattering. I genuinely appreciate your kind words and the acknowledgment of my efforts. It is profoundly meaningful to know that my work is esteemed and has left a positive impression on you. As Aristotle once said, 'The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance.' Thank you immensely for taking the time to convey your thoughts.
Thank you so much for this resume. I really found very useful and so comprehensible. This is the second time that I am studying this method. The first time was struggled for me because I couldn't understand some essays with technical terms, now I have a better understanding and can apply this method during my classes.
It's a good lesson that I had about Second Language Teaching. It's what a had teaching my students for bilingual education teacher trainner. Chambo, from Maputo, Mozambique-Africa
Excellent video. I agree 100 percent. Krashen is a genius. I have learned a second language thought language aquisiton and went benefited through comprehensible input. QUESTION: I have a question for someone who is expert in langauge teaching. The natural approach is for beginners and young children. The central emphasis is on communication and not grammar. What should we do to teach students who are adults and who speak "broken English" (i.e. speak with incorrect grammar, etc.).
Man, this video made my day FOR REAL!. I have to explain what Natural Approach it's about and now I have this topic very clear!. It is quite helpful and I want to congratulate you for this awesome work!. Greetings!
I agree with comprehensible input, but I don't agree that it's better to avoid the native language. I think the native language being used as a crutch in the beginning allows you to take much much more input. For example, reading a text in the target language at the beginning is pretty impossible, but if you have a translation of the text side by side with the original, then you can reference the translation whenever needed. Having your native language as reference allows you to understand any input much quicker. It's very easy to understand what a word means just by translating it. Trying to explain certain words avoiding your native language will demand a lot of time. So, I think your native language allows you to save a lot of time, specially at the beginning. Why avoid using a tool you already have?
Sorry, but I think you haven't understood the spirit of the natural approach and its methodology. Using the natural approach 100% would be a total immersion. For a kid of 9 years old, it would take six months to understand and speak fluently with good accent. The same road made by means of translating constantly to the native language, you'll spent your whole life and still will be struggling with the language. With the natural approach you trigger your unconscious mechanism of learning languages, with translation you just keep on moving to your own language to feel save. Besides, anyone who studies languages knows that there isn't a truly semantic equivalence between languages.
simonfilm I don't really believe this approach. From my experience, trying to figure out words by magic doesn't work. I need to know the meaning right away. If the word is “house” or “dog” it's easy (a simple drawing represents it clearly), but there are words that it will take too much time to understand. I don't really see my native language as an obstacle in the learning process, not even to accent. It can be an obstacle, but it can be a great tool as well. This “natural approach” seems too utopian for me (for the lack of a better word), maybe I could see it being applied to little kids, but I'd need to see how this would be learned in the daily life of a language student, regardless of age.
Juan Gonzalez I understand your point, and probably CLT would suit better your demands, as in CLT you can use sometimes the native language, but the problem is that once you start using the native language it's difficult to set limits and students normally tend to use their own language, so you finish talking about speaking a language and not speaking the language (and of course listening to it). There's a lot research that supports that the natural approach gives excellent results.
simonfilm you totally right, I agree 100 percent, i also agree that we may use our native language just at the beginning, meaning in schools, in the childhood, after that, we already have a good foundation to learning from it, so we do not need translation anymore
This a good video to watch if your studying for the Generalist EC-6 Bilingual Certification exam in Texas, Domain I deals with ELL language acquistion and this information is vital for you to know for the test.
Did Hans Orberg know that in "Lingua latina per se Illustrata(1951)" was used the method, that was developed by two american guys in 1983? As I know the method was developed by french foreign language teacher Francois Gouin in 19th century.
Thank you so much Paloma, you are so kind with your comment!! I'm planning to make a new video regarding the natural approach. Hope to see you here and don't forget to visit my blog "Gente con imán". Thanks!!!
people this is pure linguistics. The NA is the best approach ever developed. If you teach, learn it by heart. It wont work if youre a grammar freak, though.
Your video is very helpful!!! (I have some doubts while listening to certain words, e.g: In 1:04 "...without ¿? the native Lg and without reference to grammatical analysis" / In 1:27 "Lg is viewed as ¿? for communicating meanings and messages" / In 1:35 "The lexicon for both perception and production is considered critical? for the construction of messages") Thanks so much for your help!
Did anybody see the wolves? Thanks for the video, because of theories like the natural approach, there are so many institutions that are modifying its core curriculum in order to improve the process of education, I think here in Colombia as long as government dont provide free education for schools, the theories written in curriculums are just a dream.
Thanks for viewing it! I'm happy it helped you! Soon I'm planning to make a new one on this subject with some more information taking into account the feedback of my honorable subscribers!
I will be gratefull if you have time to prepare similar videos about other methods and approaches in the same way. I'm an English teacher in Turkey and doing studies about my proficiency. It will be a great help for me. Thanks again for all your great efforts😊
That's amazing! I learned english, then french and now I'm struggling with arabic and it certainly took me more than that. Which languages did you learn? with what purposes?
I enjoyed the content of this presentation as well as the layout. I noticed myself gaining more knowledge and was also able to stay engaged. I was actually a bit disappointed when the video ended because I was left yearning for more content!
This video es AWESOME. It has inspired me so much!! Thank you so much for sharing. I am a teacher, too and strongly believe in the Natural Approach and, overall, in motivational teaching. Thank you for sharing this!! ME HA ENCANTADO. ¡Gracias!
Krashen's Monitor Model is important to consider when designing a classroom and when implementing a curriculum because educators must be acutely aware of how our proposed curriculum will effect our English Language Learners. To learn more about this subject I would suggest watching the following video. ruclips.net/video/I2r6zBgGfjY/видео.html

Please spell check the presentation. I would have like to have used this as part of my professional devlelopment for teachers but I cannot, if it has errors.
It is a really good video!!! I am developing my thesis about the input hiphotesis and obviously I have to use the natural approach to obtain the correct results that I expect. It was really helpful for me. Thanks!!! ;)
Obviously target lexis would change to the needs of the adults - newspaper or weather over teddy bear or lollipop. Toleration of mistakes is important, correcting errors judiciously (has the mistake distorted meaning or just prescribed rules?) and students self-correct or pair correct one another because of exposed rules not instructed ones; just the same way a child learns.
Input Hypothesis is not i+1. Input Hypothesis is when easy understanding of what is input leads to an increase in the level of English, so i+1 is wrong. Just ask Krashen.
So you have to be able to understand what is the input? The video says the input should be a good amount better than your current comprehension of the language
It can be memorized by 'MANIA'
Monitor/Acquisition learning/Natural order/Input/ Affective filter
This is useful! Thank you!

As someone who is self learning a language, how can I apply these principles?
Great video! i understood this approach
+Yahaira Huaman Thanks! I can tell you that this method works. I would say that how the teacher works with the students is also paramount.

Got the idea within very short period ....presentation is short and sweet but the background music was really annoying.
Good video!
the music is very loud. Best without music.
great job
you should remeber the glottal sound of the "H"
The content is lucid but the form is creepy, especially the last minute. The sound is just like sb sharpening his knife...
