This made me cry. You lost a beautiful dog, your companion. I lost my little girl she was attacked by two large dogs who broke through a fence to get at her. So sad this happened to you. It is heart breaking.. It can happen in the blink of an eye. My tears are for you.

So sad, such a lovely dog. I hope now they are trained to go for the arm that holds the weapon.

Why risk Cyr? The man was obviously going to shoot the poor dog. Why not hold the dog back and shoot the perp in the leg instead? The K9 unit should have the bullet proof vest and also only deployed in a situation where the perp will be subdued without obvious harm to the dog. I feel the death of Cyr was totally unnecessary.... the police men should, in my opinion, have shot the perp in the leg or body if he was an obvious threat to human life. Why let Cyr go to take him down when obviously the perp would shoot the dog and or wildly fire his gun potentially into the innocent people's farm house? This was a bad decision on the behalf of the police IMHO. Sorry to say. 🙏

Shooting someone in the leg is harder than people think. I was in the military. I have earned an expert rating but still it’s difficult to disable a person.

      What an unhinged take 🙄

Well the problem with that would have been that you would of been saying how horrible the police were for killing a human being!!!
Do I hate that that gorgeous dog died for a unhinged man you bet your ass!!! But if my husband or someone’s wife was that police officer in danger then thank God for that wonderful gorgeous dog! Plus his death made him a hero and brought about change when they started using bulletproof vests for dogs and increasing the fines and punishment to the perpetrators of said crimes!
Cyr was an amazing gorgeous hero!

Totally agree with you @tracymichellphillips9720.... the police should have taken the obviously danger man down. As i commented letting Cyr go at him was useless and a sad waste of a K9 life. The man obviously would shoot the dog and worse.... could have discharged his gun wildly everywhere... even into the farm house.
Cyr should have been held back and the police should have taken the unhinged man down. They all the cause to do so. Why send a K9 dog to obvious death and potentially cause stray bullets to fly everywhere?
They took him down regardless and needlessly lost the life of Cyr. Shame

@theresarasche3173 why send Cyr to certain death? The police took down the man anyways. It was more dangerous that the man could have discharged his gun wildly... possibly into the farmhouse etc.
I feel there was zero point in letting Cyr take him down if he was an obvious threat to human life. The police should have had him turn and surrender and if not the taken him down themselves. No good came of the loss of Cyr's life. Heroic yes, but at a needless cost.

For all those criticizing the officer, this is how police dogs are used. You were not there in the situation, at the time of the incident. I've never liked dogs or any animal being used in law enforcement, in wars or even as service dogs, but sadly this is the way of the world. I have seen quite a few disabled people treating their service dogs horribly. This story also happened in 2001. Perhaps they have changed the way they use dogs now. Would they have come up with the canine vests if this unfortunate incident hadn't happened? Cyr's death has helped save the lives of many other dogs. He is honoured here in Saskatoon. Cyr is not the only police dog in the world to have gotten shot or killed while on duty.

Did Cyr have a ballistic proof vest on.?

Cyr was sacrificed simply as that. His death did not have to happen.

At the time of this story, none of the Saskatoon police dogs had vests. Because of Cyr's death, the dogs now have vests. This story happened in 2001. Police dogs in Canada didn't start wearing vests until 2000. The first police dogs that wore vests were in British Columbia. Dogs have been used for quite some time in police work for many years, and didn't wear vests. As with a lot of tragedies things change and actions are taken. Because of Cyr's death this change happened sooner than later.
