Tubthumping is not merely a song. It's an anthem.
... yeah. YEAH it's loud and it wakes people up and lets folks know you want their attention. Also it's what I play full blast when I'm mad at my neighbors for weed whacking too early. While screaming How DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES?
I remember I had a boss who loved to sing but rarely new the lyrics and his version was "I get no tongue, but I want some tongue, my wife never gonna give me tongue." he was a card lol.
"Truth is, I thought it mattered - I thought that music mattered. But does it bollocks! Not compared to how people matter."

Yes!🙌🏻
I think the best part of the Blind Melon story was when the entire band (sans Shannon) showed up at the "bee girl"'s wedding. That was really cool of them!
I've always heard she wasn't easy to work with on the video,.... Peace
I happened to see their bus in Downtown Dallas the day before Shannon was found.
That’s so cool
Was Hoon out of it that day or what
@@robertmaybeth3434 Hoon dead by then?
How could you forget Green Jelly(Jello) Three Little Pigs? The song was awesomely weird and was accompanied by a big budget video.
I came here to say wth as well. Thank you 🐷🐷🐷
I have the album!
Or fish heads by barnes and barnes
Yes
Right?! I def expected that to be on this list.
I always thought “I’m Too Sexy” was Right Said Fred making fun of fashion models, as in they’re walking down the runway.
That’s what I’ve always known as well. They were not talking about themselves.
Same here... "I'm a model, you know what I mean, and I do my little turn on the catwalk" sounds quite obvious to me.
It was actually them making fun of the men posing at their local gym.
It was 100% them "taking the piss"; though I suspect the parody was made as much out of love as anything? Never been much of a fan of the band personally (just didn't like the song when it was all over the radio, nothing against them) but Richard might have been one of the best musical guests that Nevermind the Buzzcocks ever had. Dude could easily have been a comedian.
You could tell the producers thought so too. I think his first appearance was basically like an emergency booking in the first season and Mark found him so hilarious that he ended up getting more invites than any other musical guest (afaik).
Bad touch by the Bloodhound Gang
How The Bloodhound Gang missed this list is shocking.
@@shawnpeterson3386 While we both watch X Files.
Mattel in 1997: "We don't like Barbie Girl, it's too sexual."
Mattel in 2023: "Let's have Nicki Minaj on the Barbie soundtrack!"
Right?!
Spot on!
Check out The Orb's remix of the song Barbie Girl, so sick.
What was I made for is an amazing song from this movie that everyone is up in arms about well, not everyone. I’m very surprised it wasn’t nominated for the Oscar and the song Ken sings is. The man that I thought of the 90s I thought of Barbie girl.
"Aaaaand... let her sample Barbie girl!" 😁
This one deserves a part 2,3,4 and so on😂 love the 90s
At the 14:31 mark, what no mention of that wonderful refrain, "Pissing the night away." Gotta include that.
It's the best part😂
How can a weird songs of the 90s list have no Primus on it?
Shake hands with beef? Winona's big brown beaver? My name is Mud?
Exactly
Jerry was a racecar driver
because Primus SUCKS!
@@romeoslover817the rednex don't?
I was expecting Eifel 65's "Blue (Da Ba Dee)" to be on this list.
No rain is brilliant. There's nothing weird about it.
How TF did I miss "David Duchovny Why Don't You Love Me"!!!?? That's goddamn brilliant!
Also, that last skit with a young Jim Careie parading "Snow" almost made me spit out my drink! Hahaha! 😂😂😂
My first thought for a weird 90's song was She Don't Use Jelly by the flaming lips.
I still listen to that song.
i love when people younger than me talk about the flaming lips and i can interupt with oh ive seen them live, yeah when they opened for candle box in 95 🤣
It’s on my playlist
This was the FIRST song I thought of
When cassette tapes and a walk man were the pinnacle of technology.. gotta love them days! I’m glad I was born in the late 70’s to witness all these first hand at a friends house who had mtv.
Walkmans and cassettes are making a comeback and so are discmans.
How bizarre by OMC
Oh man. I remember this album. I was absolutely obsessed with it back in ‘97. Remember cruising around with my friends as a teenager playing “How Bizarrre…”
Thanks for the flashback man.
I was obsessed with Omc...one of my favorite songs of 1997!
Was looking for this comment!
Enough time has passed that I can revisit my teenage years. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.
A list of weird 90s songs that doesn't include any They Might Be Giants? Hmmm.
And King Missile, Mojo Nixon, Butthole Surfers, Dead MIlkmen.
what i love about all those "one hit wonders" is how great the whole albums are. king missile is classic!@@danielchapman6032
Fuck, I’m old 😅
I know the feeling
Yeah man. I feel like I'm getting older but nothing has changed to me as far as my body goes..still moving like I'm in my 20s and now that childhood music is called Classic
You and me both!
Although "No Rain" has an upbeat sound to it, I wouldn't call the lyrics upbeat. "And I don't understand why I sleep all day / And I start to complain that there's no rain / And all I can do is read a book to stay awake / And it rips my life away, but it's a great escape" or "You know I'd like to keep my cheeks dry today" are not very cheery lyrics. I feel like the upbeat tone accentuates the actual sadness of the lyrics. And the bee girl is sad, too. No one wants to watch her do her dance until she comes across Blind Melon in the field. Great song, though. One of my faves.
Yeah I was confused when he said the lyrics were optimistic. It’s about struggling with crippling depression.
it is optimistic in its pretty way. its a very cup half full perspective from the deep end. so thankful for the tugs of recognition sung from so far away. we really are all here together@@sunnyandthechlo
@@sunnyandthechlo I was just about to say that till I saw your reply.
I had a friend who knew every word of "Informer". He had an interesting knack for understanding song lyrics.
Guy used to piss in phone booth!
I don't know what was "weird" about Color Me Bad 😔
Sorry, they were weird,
They were guys but they didn't sound like guys, so not weird by today's standards, but by the 90s standards they kinda were
They are reaching. 😂 There was nothing wrong with this group.
Sounded like other R&B groups. Not weird at all.
They were pretty weird.
"Mmm mmm mmm mmm" was so weird that "Weird Al" made a parody of it called "Headline News"
Hilarious song
Bee girl is iconic. It was so weird and wonderful
Tubthumping is a great song that always makes me smile!
without that song i wouldnt know what to call all that flannel fedora lumineers music. its that porch stomp tub thumper shit.
The band was apparently annoyed the song charted. They preferred to fly under the radar, but fate intervened.
RIP SHANNON
indeed. when it came out i was young and didnt buy the album, i liked the song ok. but when i listened to soup is when i knew we lost something.
No Rain is cool but honestly it’s not even in the top 10 of their catalog. They were also awesome live.
I'm old enough to have lived through all of these. Most weren't weird at the time.
The band Chumbawamba sued the mountain bike company Chumba Wamba for name infringement. Even though the bicycle company had existed before the band did, the bicycle company didn't copyright the name and the band did. So now the bicycle company changed their name to Chumba. Thanks.
How exactly is “No Rain” weird? The video was offbeat but the song is perfectly normal and of the time. The song is not optimistic , either. It’s about being depressed. How do you miss that unless you don’t pay attention to the lyrics at all???
I would have labeled No Rain more distinctive than weird.
I agree! Nothing weird about it… Great song and great video!
Right Said Fred rocked!
Er ok .. 😂😂
Not anymore. Richard Fairbrass supports Putin and wants to see the return of the Soviet Union.
That aqua album is a banger.
I always thought the songs "Down By The Water" by P.J. Harvey and "Twiggy Twiggy Twiggy Versus Bond, James Bond" by Pizzicato 5 were both bonkers.
I love twiggy twiggy twiggy. I have a mixed tape a friend made for me in 95 and that song is on it.
I had both of those CDs, loved 'em!! Both of them are pretty weird all around. I guess that's why I loved them!!
Pizzicato 5… no there is a band I’m not heard since oh before you were born…
Here for PJ
Big fish, little fish swimming in the water, come back here and give me my daughter!! I think that is what she said, I never looked up the lyrics, I had two of her cd's , loved her years ago!!
Snow's "Informer" was Canada's Vanilla Ice.
"Mmm mmm mmm mmm" is Canada's "American Badass"
How about 1995's "I Wanna Be A Hippy" by Technohead? You can't ask for anything more weird.
Music played a big role in the 90s, as they were my party years.
OMC’s How Bizarre needs to be on here.
Scatman: Ba da bee
Eifel 65: Blue
Dandy Warhols: Not if you were the last junkie on earth
Wheatus: teenage dirtbag
Teenage Dirtbag was released in the summer of 2000.
Damn. I used to jam to all of these on road trips to nowhere.
Shannon wrote "Change" the Bassist from Blind Melon wrote NO RAIN.
he used to play it on the beach for quarters to be able to buy Lo Mein for lunch and pay for parking while working during the week
I love change
And also Chris Cornell never covers no rain
Red Nex are not dressed as cowboys they're dressed in traditional Appalachian clothing. Also there's an Informer music video with subtitles. Snow also went on to use money raised by the song to make a teen center on Toronto to help.
As someone who lives in Appalachia I can confirm this.
Sadly Rexnex singer Anders "Dagger" Sandberg passed away in January 2024 at the age of 55.
If we are talking "wierd" as in strange or unique:
Prozzäk - Sucks to Be You
Toy Box - Best Friend
Boomtang Boys - Squeeze Toy
V.A.S.T. - Pretty When You Cry
Placebo - Pure Morning
Lo Fidelity Allstars - Battleflag
Blur - Coffee & TV
Death in Vegas - Aisha
Esthero - That Girl
Mr. Oizo - Flat Beat
Squirrel Nut Zippers - Hell
Just to name a few.
I love Hell! That’s a fun song! 😊
This brings back memories...❤
What about Moo Moo Land by Tammy Wynette. She was making fun of the weird songs coming out at the time.
@@tiffanymichaels2429 Omg that was hilarious!
Ween and Mr. Bungle embrace the weird and kick ass.
Fun Facts: Informer by Snow is playing in the background on Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Dee gives Birth.
Shannon Hoon of BM worked at MtV offices for a very brief time before making it big. They said he was a pretty bad assistant but was so sweet and charming, no one wanted to get rid of him.
Also, somewhere in the internet universe, you’ll find the late great Chris Farley dressed as the bee girl. It’s. Awesome
As a child of the 90's (I was born in 1988) rednex was and still is my jam! 😅😂 had to edit this as the video for tubthumping was filmed in a now closed pub in Castleford West Yorkshire, I live 25 miles away and went to Castleford frequently with my parents, this might be random useless knowledge but I think it's kinda cool 😅😅
I loved Cotton Eyed Joe! I still have the Jock Jams CD it was on and I still play it! Graduated high school in '94 and that was part of our warm ups during basketball games (cheerleader here).
Here comes the hotstepper by Ini Kamoze. Weird, but very catchy
and unintentionally got into Forest Gump because of an audio error picking up the song from someone’s radio while filming a scene 🤣😎
@@bostonrailfan2427 that’s hilarious, I never knew that
Dude, Big props for mentioning David Duchovny, I didn't think that song made it much past the fandom.
it's still a bop, and now the man himself has a steady music career, which is cool.
M x
Not "mainstream" but awesome. I bought the CD because of the song. I wasn't sure anyone else knew about it, lol.
I’d never heard of Bree Sharp til this video. Checked out her two studio albums and was quite impressed. The production quality wasn’t great but the songs had great hooks and the lyrics were unexpectedly clever. Two bad there’s only two releases from her… She def got talent.
I was so lucky to have left home in 1993 at age 19 & enjoy pubs, live bands and be young in the 90s. Work 4-10pm, go to bands or nightclub, drink & smoke too much, get home around 6am, sleep all morning, wake up smelling like an ashtray, kinda recover, repeat lol. Loved the music, mostly the alternative & grunge. Ahh the nineties.. how I miss thee 😅
This video was like reliving high school!
You got my hopes up when you showed the Presidents singing Peaches. Still one of my favourite bands….
But he forgot Dune buggy arguably much weirder than peaches 😂 Both songs are great 90’s songs
Actually Lump and Kitty were weird and wonderful too
I love Lump and Peaches
You all forgot Back Porch and We are not going to make haha 👌
how about "People Are Still Having Sex" by LaTour or "I Got a Man" by Vitamin K?
Positive K
I love “I got a man.” I have it on my 90s playlist. It’s very fun and relatable
I TOTALLY forgot about David Duchovny song! Thank you! These songs were from the greatest time in my life, so it was an awesome ride back in time!
Space are a band with a plethora of wonderfully weird songs, including The Ballad of Tom Jones with Cerys Matthews of Catatonia, who have their own Mulder and Scully. Alas I can imagine these are not well-known in the US, being so distinctly British
I loved Deeply Dippy too❤❤. The song ' Mulder and Scully ' by catatonia WAS awesome 🎉🎉❤❤❤...
"MMM MMM MMM" I love it and both of Crash Test Dummies albums.
Both? They have 8 albums
I love a lot of these. "I Want to Sex Up", my brother misheard a lyric when that came out. I won't say what because I don't want to offend anyone.
Thanks for adding the Jim Carrey version of "Informer". It's the first thing I thought of when you mentioned the song. 😂
This is my favorite action comedy of all time and I'm really glad you enjoyed it James. It was more fun than usual watching you react to this. You are awesome too!
Pink, by Aerosmith is a pretty weird song! I think the weirdness of some of these songs had worn off because we heard them so often
Crash test dummies song is one of my favorites of the 90s
It sounds like Vegeta from DBZ
The 90’s. Where even the “weird” songs were great.
'All i can do is read a book to stay awake '
Those who never experienced the world before iphones and internet just won't get how real and pionent that lyric is.
The 90's wasn't just a decade but a feeling
In living color at the end. Great choice.
And now the brothers brothers. Lol
No Rain has always been one of my favorites. 💜
Mine too. Still is. I don't think it was weird tho. Maybe I'm the weird one! Lol
@@Black-Cat1127 that makes two of us! 🤣
@@brendakearns8995 Now I know I'm not alone! Lol
It’s such a lovely feel-good song! Somehow I didn’t discover it till a few years ago and I’m still not tired of it, though sometimes it’ll get too stuck in my head 😂
I love it too but the lyrics aren’t optimistic or happy like the video claims. It is about crippling depression that is ruining his life.
I never seen I get knocked down as weird and it was even a mascot song for Australian AFL as well. For me Its a Final Fantasy song of never giving up
I saw this song as weird the very first time I heard it
I can't be the only one who was waiting for Primus to show up on a weird song list.
How did King Missle's Detachable Pen1$ not make the list. I was always amazed at the amount of radio play it got in the 90s. Especially since it's theme seems more relevant today than in the 90s
These songs may be weird but one can't deny how fun these are to listen to.
Oh the wonderful nostalgia feeling from this list
90's so weird, I can think of several songs that could be on this list too. Including every song by Cake, "Sober" by Tool, and "Standing outside a broken phone booth with money in my hand". And "Flagpole Sitta", of course.
Anything by The Bloodhound Gang and Primus
@@aluminumfalcon552 How could I forget Primus?
Cake is so wonderfully weird and fun
Early grundge was pure weird PJ Harvy Down by the water. . At least it was all good weird. The weird music from today is awful 😖
@@Hx3ney Cracker, What the World Needs Now. So good.
The lawsuit for Barbie Girl was not dissmissed, it was dropped by Mattell since the song was so popular it wsa a net positive for the Barbie brand.
Pretty sad that the lead singer of Blind Melons had such a horrible heroine addiction. He was barely able to make the video and died in 95
This is fabulous, hope there are more parts!
Mmm mmm mmm mmm isn't an innocent song about 3 kids, its a song about child abuse -physical, emotional, and mental (Birthmarks all over her body were cigarette burns, white hair was from emotional abuse, religious zealotry is mental abuse)
Came here for this comment
No it wasn’t, it was about what the narrator said. You’re projecting into it.
Geggy Tah "Whoever You Are" was weird 'n' wonderful!
That's the song I immediately thought of. What about "The Bad Touch" by Bloodhound Gang, or "Wynona's Big Brown Beaver" by Primus, or "Detachable Penis" by King Missle?
@@johnd5931 some of those were critiqued by none other than Beavis and Butthead!
These songs are my child/teenagehood.
No Rain... Another awesome song... I still love it!
"Cotton Eye Joe" is a favourite of my husband's.
I JUST got that out of my head maybe two hours ago (thanks to a random King of the Hill meme) and now you've gotten it stuck in there again LOL
Superman by Crash Test Dummies is one of my favorite songs from that time. I’m too sexy is right up there. It’s just too easy to feel sexy when you’re moving to that song and damn those guys look good!!!
But every time I listen to Superman, I get teary.
9:48 Also made number one on the Dr Dimento show
Every song on this list had me thinking “oh yeah! I remember that one”. At least till you got to “David Duchovny”. Never even heard of it, but really glad I missed it.
But honestly, this list doesn’t do any justice to all the oddball, catchy, one or two hit wonders of the 1990s.
Green Jello/Jelly - "Three Little Pigs" and "The Bear Went Over The Mountain"
Weird 90s hit... Scatman. It was everywhere!
Most of these have been in my plauyslists SINCE the 90s (except Bree Sharp - never heard of her and Color Me Badd - was never a fan). the 90s in general were WEIRD, but I guess so was my taste in music.
You should definitely check out Bree Sharp. The Cheap and Evil girl song is great, as well as all the others on the album.
Lots of Superman songs came out in the 90s for some reason
Cotton Eyed Joe from Rednex is one of my favorite songs and has been for like two decades now! I'll never get tired of it! xD
I'm blue was pretty weird, and a good way to start raging arguments over the lyrics.
Hobo Humpin Slobo Babe by Whale. Nuff said.
How did I forget about that song?
The video is just as messed up as the song! 🤪
Fastball's The Way was inspired by a true story.
Good but odd at leadt to me was Everybody's Free (to wear sunscreen) by Baz Luhrmann. Still love it❤
Afternoons and coffee spoons by crash test dummies is one of my favorite songs ever
Yes! The video is awesome too.
Color Me Badd wasn’t weird. They were a boy band singing songs about girls in an era absolutely saturated with boy bands singing songs about girls. They were about as mainstream and normal as you could get. Chumbawamba’s Tubthumper was also not at all weird (they actually started out in the early 80s as an anarcho-punk outfit which is kinda weird considering the direction they went), but that song was very much fitting with the mainstream of the time.
This ❤
Blind Melon No Rain is a song about suicide and depression
Cornershop: Brimful of Asha
The term "cotton eyed joe" is a reference to venereal disease....
2:01 It was so Weird it got a nice parody from Al Yankovic, _Headline News_
Wow, that dancer on the right of Snow is stunning! Always curious if 'lick your boom boom down' is what he had to do to survive jail time.
Some great song selections. ❤❤❤
Umm, 'cotton eyed joe' was not just causing chaos (in an innocent way) when he pitched up and disappeared... we all know that right, right?!
#1, I know we all went, "Mmm mmm mm mmm" right from that first chord.
Tub thumping has my favorite misheard lyrics: I got no job, but I'm an opera fan!!
I never heard that David love me sound in the 90s.😊
Do an 80s list! I’ll start you out:
- Don Quichotte by Magazine 60
- Boom Boom Boom Let’s Go Back to My Room by Paul Lekakis
The obvious- Wierd Al, maybe Green Jello, or Green Jelly's "Three Little Pigs"
