The Metropolitan Lounge is super nice. I dropped by there to decompress after an arrival last year. The food and drink offerings were indeed impressive, especially compared to the only other Amtrak lounge I’ve been in, which was in Los Angeles. I had no idea about the shower rooms but I didn’t need them anyhow.
I rode BAL-NYP, other way was on normal NEC. I got a BidUp seat and the car was packed. I got stuck with a window side table seat so I didn’t exactly have leg room but the service was wonderful. They kept the coffee coming. I got the egg white omelet. It was, like your short rib, fantastic.

This was nice, but nothing will ever match the first class service when High speed rail service, between NY and DC , was introduced. I recall the seating arrangements to be that of the first class section on planes. They covered the tray with a linen cloth. The meal was served on ‘China’ plates, with metal utensils, and nice stemware. That’s when high speed service was great.

I rode First Class from Philly to Boston a few years back. Great experience. the attendant was friendly and help. The new Train Hall is amazing looking. Kind of reminds me of the way the original Penn Station looked like. Lots more light, and more space to move around. The ceiling actually reminds me of the original station. (i wonder if that was the point?)

I've done that trip before on the Acela to Boston. Actually, I think it was Northeast Regional to start, and then picked up the Acela. For business travelers, the Quiet Cars, availability of electrical outlets and wifi, luggage directly above the seats, and meals with drinks really made it worthwhile. I could see myself using the shower and other amenities since I often travel at odd hours, and it's just "go-go-go" once I arrive, often trying to call into conference calls enroute. Sleep and rest are at a premium, so any chance I have to catch some "ZZZZ's", I'll do it. Taking the Acela tomorrow and the day after. If you're going downtown, Amtrak beats flying since you can ditch the rental car.

The problem with expanding the Amtrak network is, it's a chicken-or-egg conundrum.
No private investor is going to sink that much money, up front, into a national rail network. Acquisition of right-of-way would be fraught with nimbyism at every conceivable turn, making the price sky-high before they could even lay a single crosstie.
It would take government sized money to do it. Problem there is, government money always involves a whole bunch of palm-greasing. And, as we've already seen in 2021, a single election can kill an entire multi-state project.
The private sector can't afford that big a project; the US government would be more inclined to use it to move dollars from Donor X to Politician Y, than to move passengers from Point A to Point B.
It's depressing, but that's where we are right now.

Hi there, Im planning a trip to Maryland in May of 2022. I know I have to take Amtrak to Union Station Washington DC and from commute to Maryland. I did take a look at available Amtrak Tickets to purchase on dates I want to depart and return but only see Buiness and First Class tickets available to ride on the Amtrak Acela train. Im guessing either the Coach area of the Amtrak Acela train is sold out or they just do not have coach.
My question is which is better to purchase, Business or First Class? Now I see that First Class is more expensive than Business, why? What would be the difference Business and first class?
I'd like to sit where there is a big table and not a little tray.

First time viewing your channel, so here’s my first impressions (no set order) … video quality/content was excellent. I would have appreciated a peek at Business Class though to differentiate that from your First Class car (you did walk through 2nd class). Your voice intonation hit me as monotone. Perhaps a little uptick every now and then wouldn’t hurt 🤓. The Metropolitan Lounge is dope! I was really surprised. Imagine what it will be when pandemic restrictions are lifted (maybe in the fall). Uuum the tv microwave meal (even though you said it tasted good) needs A LOT OF WORK on presentation. I have heard Amtrak has planned to upgrade long haul dining cars in late summer. They sure have a colossal upgrade to accomplish! Then I think short haul services are last to be upgraded. Would I use Acela ? Yes absolutely! How could you not considering it’s city center to city center service and ok trains are not nearly as concerned about weather abnormalities as is flying. I truly hope that President Biden (aka Amtrak Joe) and Secretary of Transport Pete Buttigieg (yea Pete) make their wishes of high speed rail corridors come to fruition … America certainly is ripe for them and climate change is not a joke. As we see this summer, it’s starkingly a reality. Keep up the great work. 👍🏻

Amtrak used to have that? WOW! That must sound like a party back then. Unfortunately, I don't think these amenities exist on trains, but with a smartphone or a radio of some kind onboard, it may make up for it to pass the time, but I don't think it is as magical as the entertainment on the lounge that you described. Imagine if Amtrak hosted an EDM dance party on the lounge cars. Takes the party bus concept to a whole new level. OR WAIT! Imagine a party car. Oh the friendships you'll make through that journey.

Laughing for European times and distances.
456 miles from DC to Boston, 225 miles from DC to NY, 231 miles from NY to Boston, now times...
NE Regionals ACS-64 trains covers whole route in 7:45 to 8:30 hrs, maximum speed 125 mph, average is 62 mph with stops, Acelas do this slightly better, 6:45 to 7:15 hrs, average speed is 67 mph with stops, 135-150 mph maximum speed (150 mph is only allowed in Massachusetts and Rhode Island for..33 miles..). Reason for slow, is 15-20 min stop in NY plus 10-12 more stops along 456 route, slow portion for about 65 miles in Connecticut because of commuter trains, there maximum speed for all trains is 80 mph, 125-135 mph in NJ, 60 mph in NY tunnels, 30 mph in Baltimore tunnels, 50-80 mph in around Philadelphia hub, 125 mph from Philadelphia to Newark DE, 135 near DE to North Baltimore tunnels (there is only 30 mph) and from Baltimore Washington Airport to New Carolton is 135 mph, 80 mph for rest of route to DC. And 125 mph anywhere else, from East Connecticut to Boston, except 150 mph portions.
NE Regionals trains do this up to 125 mph where speed permitted. Commuter trains do 80-100 mph, except MARTA trains from Baltimore to DC, 100-125 mph. Travel on Acela between DC and NY takes from 2:45 to 3:00 hrs, NE regionals do more stops and travel there 3:15 to 3:40 hrs.(225 miles), Travel from NY to Boston takes on Acela 3:40-4:10 hrs, while Regionals do more stops for 4:15 to 4:45 hrs (231 miles).
      1 mile is 1.609 km.
New Avelia Liberty comes to NEC for 20 year old Acela replacement in 2022-23 this train limited in NEC for..160 mph with active tilt all time... Avelia Liberty trains are capable to do 187 mph with tilt and 217 mph without it...
But we have FRA Highest Safety Standard and obsolete tracks and bridges from New Haven to Baltimore, except few upgraded sections in NJ.
NEC maximum permitted speed is 165 mph between New Brunswick and Trenton (33 miles) in NJ.
Also keep in mind that this is like 4 big megapolises along this 456 miles route.
DC-Baltimore, Wilmington-Philadelphia, NJ-NY-Connecticut or Tri-State Area, Rhode Island-Boston. Only in rural areas trains permitted to pass faster than 125 mph and they are only less than 100 miles left for that in total.

BTW business class in Acela price is $69 between DC and NY, and $59 between NY and Boston, $79 between DC and Boston, Regionals are $34...
So what's benefits for extra $125 for Acelas First class vs Business class($69), $10 value of fast prepared food, you paid $135 for that...
Just a prestige to say that you have rode on First Class, oops visit for free to modern Metropolitan Lounge in new Penn Station...

Average speed of Acela with stops between NYC and DC 78 mph, while Regionals average speed is 72 mph.
Now between NY and Boston average speed with stops is 65 mph for Acela and 62 mph for Regionals...
Now divide this from 225 miles NY to DC and 231 miles NY to Boston distances. Plus Regionals stops between DC and Boston on 16 or more stations, while Acela stops limited to 12 or less.

    • @JackArkitekt
      @JackArkitekt 3 года назад

@@justinxie9988 commuting to work??? 225 miles from Home??? Acela save you 9 minutes between NY to Philadelphia and 20 min between Boston and New Haven, Really this not what you can't expect from HS train, 91 miles from NY to Philadelphia and 157 miles from New Haven and Boston. Most business people traveling on Acela either from NY to Philadelphia or Wilmington, or from these stations to DC or Baltimore, or from Boston to New Haven or Stamford. Acela trip from NYC to DC is 2:45-3:10 hrs average, from NYC to Boston is 3:40 to 4:15 hrs
Now Regional trains do these NYC to DC from 3:10 to 3:40 hrs, and NYC to Boston from 4:10 to 4:40 hrs. The difference in time depends on number of intermediate stops increased in rush hours, decreased in mid-day, also depends on how long is stop for transfer to other trains in Philadelphia and New Haven. NYC stop is usually 10-20 for Acela and 15 to 30 for Regionals. Because many people getting off the train first before boarding can start in NYC Penn Station stop. Acela process gained just 5-10 minutes faster for this in NYC. I don't count NE Regionals overnight trains, what's stops in NYC both early morning and stops lasted 45 minutes. Also prolonged stops in Philadelphia, New Haven and Providence. 6-10, 10-20, 5-10 accordingly. All this prolonged overnight trips between DC and Boston on Regionals with reduced maximum speed to 110 mph instead of 125 mph, because of Viewliner type 1 sleeper limits to total 9,5-10 hrs. This train have southern terminal in Newport News, Virginia (185 miles from DC), while sleeper car added in DC.
Acela trains have very little benefits over regionals, who also have overhaul their Amfleet 1 cars, refurbished their seats. New Avelia Liberty cars would have better opportunity for over Regionals because of more capacity for train and simple new cars and no shake quiet tilt ride, also faster acceleration and speed. 160 mph vs 150 mph for current Acela, vs 125 mph Siemens ACS-64 lead Regionals. Current fleet of Acela is reached 20 years, while Amfleet cars is 45 years, but their locos are built from 2014-2018. And they have faster acceleration than current Acela trainsets.

Do you need a bed in airplane for 5 hours or less flight??? BTW Amtrak leg room in coaches and overall comfort there uncomparable with airplanes, not mention of buses!!! Even Amfleet 1 cars provide sufficient for long ride comfort legroom!!!
Amfleet 2 cars (longer distance equipped trains) provide even foot and leg support, more reclined seats, business class in coaches have 2+1 seat combination if located in cafe/business club car. Sleeper car added to this train mainly for people riding for selected people, who willing pay $194 for maximum 9,5 ride, versus $29-34 for coach seating or $59-69 for business class.

Why on earth would you not show the interior more than the view out the window. And I am guessing that most travelers aren’t interested in which specific train you are on. The food looks like a bad TV dinner.

"There was a man who rode to Washington from Wilmington Delaware for 40 years (and didn't do a gott damn thing for any of those years) and they named the station after him." Probably because the station is stationary and unremarkable just like the namesake.

Now if the U.S. can just freshen up their sleeper trains so they look like they belong in the 21st century

The food looked OK but the presentation looked to be on the level of a greasy spoon diner. All that plastic trash left over.

Well I loved taking the train. But now I won't take it. I am a smoker and no place to smoke now. When they bring back a smoking car I will take the train again. Or put exhaust fans in the sleeper cars rooms so you can smoke in your room.
