How We Sail Wing On Wing | Crossing the Lombok Strait to Bali | Ep 377

- Jamie explains how we pole out the genoa. It can be a bit tricky to set up, but with practice allows for a safe, fun passage. Sailing wing on wing (aka goosewing) when you have a following sea can give a rollicking fast ride anywhere, but across the Lombok Strait it doubled the adventure! This part of the Bali Sea is notoriously fickle (and on occasion impassable)...

One of my favorite Ep!!! Kind of just did a mic drop at the end thought I ran out of battery, lol. Thanks, stay safe.
Hehe, we like to leave on a cliff-hanger 😅
❤looking forward to more sailing videos
Fantastic! Thanks for sharing.
A pleasure, André.
Lovely video, as always. Can't wait to follow you both on the journey north. And we didn't see a thing! 😉
😀 It's gonna be an adventure, the Java Sea likes to keep boaters on their toes! 🙏 Liz
Enjoy guys. Always love your vids. Still fantasizing about visiting the Anambas Islands!
Oh, so do we, Steven 😁
Nice fold in your main... 😮 When we were buying our boat, we thought we wanted in-mast but the boat we purchased was slab reefed. As it turns out we are very happy with our slab reefed main and are now very glad we did _not_ get in-mast reefing. And now you have demonstrated yet another advantage - our halyard is up and down on every sail and therefore is always tensioned correctly. No slipping halyards for us... 😄
It looked like a nice sail, if a bit lumpy and the views were wonderful.
To be honest, now that we've had in-mast all these years I almost wouldn't have it any other way. Simple to deploy, can furl away when off-wind, it's a pretty stress-free system for liveaboards.
Yay!
A credit toward your filming, editing and narration: the fastest sixteen minutes I've seen and heard. Bravo. Great seeing you guys! All best.
Thanks, Daniel. Appreciate the feedback 👍
255th tag-along view; 53rd LIKE posted. I've sailed wing-on-wing, but hadn't ever heard it called "goosewing" until now.
Maybe a Canadian term, Peter 😉
Common term here in the UK. Only come across 'wing on wing' through watching American cruisers on RUclips. Guessing there might be other regionally different terms. 😊
👍👍
😎
Sailing on a sailing channel go figure. Me taken a piss. 😂
We were as surprised as you were 😅
🥰🥰🥰❤❤❤🌬⛵
😁👍
that was a great sail; question: now I know i haven't watched from the very begininig but have you ever sailed to Australia and/or the South Pacific islands? if not, why?
Hi Jerome. We will discuss this in more detail some time in the future but the reality is it's too far away from the UK. I will be having to spend more time flying back there.
What are your thoughts on using that DJI Pocket cam? Didn’t really notice the wrinkle in the main, but did notice the shadow of a Pocket 3. I just got this camera but have not filmed out on the water yet. The footage from this episode was beautiful, so im guessing you like it?
Hi Edward. The footage is a mix from the GH5, Action 4 and Pocket 3. The Pocket 3 is great for the wide shots and also talking to camera, it's a neat bit of kit, and the 32bit float audio means you'll never clip. I went through a period of shooting in 'normal', like in this episode, but I prefer shooting in log so in a few episodes I switch back. What the pocket 3 in normal mode is good for is shooting the face in a shadow with a bright background. It uses some kind of HDR magic to not blow out highlights while retaining the correct exposure on the face. I really like the Pocket 3 and use it every day.
@@followtheboat great to know! Feel better for spending the money knowing you’ve endorsed it. Another great episode. Beautiful filmmaking.
Beautiful sailing. So nice to see!
Do you still have your WindPilot? How well does it work on a run?
We do, but it was decommissioned when we built our solar arch, so we've not used it in years. I couldn't comment on this with any conviction but in these kind of conditions it would probably be ok.
Hi Jamie, do you ever use your stay sail sheeted in tight when you sail goosewing? Eddie says it prevents rolling as much!
No, is that a thing? Wouldn't the sail be constantly backing if sheeted in? We tend to only use our staysail when going into wind but I'm happy to hear other ideas!
@@followtheboat I have tried to paste a copy of the extract of downwind sailing but unable to do so on this forum so I have emailed you.
Hey Steve, thanks for that. Received and replied 👍
So when you cross the equator, if you’ve never done it before are you going to perform the ceremony held by the US Navy? Polywog to Shellback. LOL
We've done it a few times now... Just waiting to get the requisite tattoos. 🐢😆Liz
Does your pole longer than the distance between the mast and the forestay , ours is so we can’t tack but others aren’t , curious
We have a staysail and a baby stay so no chance of tacking with it unfortunately 😕
What are your thoughts on a parasailor?
We have no experience of it so we can't comment, but it looks like a good design and probably easier to deploy than messing around with poles and preventers.
How to use your pole 😂.
There's always something new to learn 😁
