    A great job of visualizing representing how codes form axis and how axis enable themes. Most presentations only explain with bullets, but your exemplars are much more illuminating. Really well done James.

    This is really helpful and the most expansive and clear by far that I have found for my MSc. This sort of approach would be most welcome to show students at my University conducting research as we aren't really given much to go on for IPA. The process here is broken down really well and explained visually, which I really needed to help make sense of the process as it's so conceptual. Thanks James.

    Thank you Dr Woodall. All seems good, apart from one (very) problematic claim that "the data collection questions are not the themes". If the researcher adopts a so-called theory-driven approach to qualitative data collection and analysis (in contrast to purely inductive, data-driven approach, e.i. grounded theory), thus having a specific research question(s), then apparently the questions (to be precise, the concepts or constructs used in them) are indeed themes, though new themes may arise of course. This is a very important clarification to be made here.

    Hello James,
    Thank you for your helpful presentation. I am currently planning a qualitative research (focus group interviews) for my masters. From my reading so far, it seems that researchers are meant to demonstrate credibility, inter-rater reliability etc to show that a good methodological approach has been applied. My question is, for those students working alone (Masters, PhD) how do you demonstrate reliability? The process of thematic analysis appears time-consuming and not something that a third party can 'briefly' give you feedback on unless you are part of a research team. Is it acceptable or common practice for one individual to develop codes and perform a thematic analysis without a second opinion? Secondly, did you transcribe your own interviews? if so are you able to share the transcription convention that you used? I have read about 'intelligent transcribing' but not sure exactly what it means and if that is frowned upon by academics.
    Thank you

    • @jameswoodall1275
      @jameswoodall1275  8 лет назад

      Hi, not sure I can do your post justice in a short message. Qualitative researchers may dismiss the terms validity and reliability (associated with positivism) and opt for credibility, transparency & trustworthiness. To that extent, engaging in transparent processes and being reflective and reflexive is critical. On transcription, yes I did my own for my PhD. There's some good papers on this out there - discourse analysis and narrative analysis may demand more detailed and meticulous transcription, but I have found my (limited) transcription skills sufficient for thematic analysis. I hope this helps. James

I have to analyse 4 interviews and I am wondering if while writing my results I need to write the codes/code categories and their connections together or for each of the 4 interviews separately and then discuss them altogether in my Discussion section.

    Thank you for this wonderful video. I am about to start my qualitative data analysis with content analysis and i want to use deductive method. I have two questions; the bang up theme did you create it before the coding from the previous literature? or you develop it after you made coding? second I am reading paper how to plan and perform a qualitative study using content analysis by Mariette Bengtsson and after coding they have divided cloumn into sub category and then category and then theme, which I assume sub category is (basic theme) category is (organization theme) and theme is ( Global theme) according to your video. is it so? I am guessing it correct?

    But I have one question: I am currently doing qualitative analysis for an MPhil degree and wondering about one thing - how on earth can I bring the commented sections of my data together? I mean, I have finished coding using word and the coding is done the same way as commenting. So now I want to bring all the selected/commented parts by the one code together so that I can have quotes under each code. Oh, is what am saying clear?! I am afraid not!

    • @jameswoodall1275
