    Harley might be stubborn due to you guys putting him in such a small cage. Animals need bigger places to roam. Try a wire cage with a lot more space and see if his behavior changes. There's quite a few studies out there explaining why hamsters, bunnies, dogs, etc. tend to have negative personality traits when put in small cages.

    Haha I'm not sure why I'm here. My lil bud Olaf is sleeping curled up in my hand. Honestly, I got so lucky with his temperment. He doesn't poop in his wheel, he's got his little designated corner where he does his business, and is SUPER friendly with people. He's totally fine with being handled by strangers, and will only huff at me and be grumpy for about 10 seconds after I wake him up. They really do learn the sound of your voice, and I've noticed that he'll always follow me around my apartment if he's in his hamster ball if I talk to him. They're super rewarding pets, and even though you're going to get pooped on a few times, they're totally worth it!

    Girls, do your research! Hedgies need a saucer weel, the one that you show can hurt their back. Also, they need a heater (as they're from Africa, 27C is recommended)
    And you can train them to pop always in the same spot so the cage would be cleaner.
    I also recommend to feed them worms at least two times a week as they contain a lot of protein and fat.
    If you can, have them with you while your at home -avoiding noisy atmospheres- . Mine always sleeps on my legs while I'm reading, painting or watching TV. If they associate your smell with relaxing moments, they will be friendly in a short period of time.

      How to make them poop in one place?

    • @jolief7827
      @jolief7827 6 лет назад +4

      You don't have to have a saucer wheel as long as you have the correct size. When they run on their wheel and their back is straight they will have no issues.

    • @alexcagg
      @alexcagg 6 лет назад +6

      Put two separate textures in the cage, I do paper towels and fleece. Put the wheel over the paper towels as hedgies usually poop while moving the poop scent will accumulate on the paper towels and wheel and the hedgehog will naturally use it as a bathroom. Buty ultimately its a hedgehog. There will be poop, it'll get on the wheel they'll run in it and walk around the cage. But they wont actively shit in their home if you train them like this, keeping fleece and beds cleaner.

      Even a large bin cage is better than this wire cage. If you buy a big plastic bin (the biggest you can find - at least 450 square feet) and let the lid open your hedgehog will not be able to jump AND will have the ventilation he needs. Don’t stick them in small cages or bins.

  • @whateveruwu9278
    @whateveruwu9278 7 лет назад +52

    I got to disagree with your cage, is too tiny for them! Even for Hamsters it's to tiny. A Wheel is not gonna solve this problem!
    You need a big cage and also a playpen, because normally they walk a lot and I mean a LOT.

      Meant for a guinea pig guinea pigs need very big cages so that cage is not good for a hedgehog

  • @andihearts5033
    @andihearts5033 7 лет назад +16

    a cheaper and better option to cages are plastic storage bins. the hedgehogs can't try to climb them and hurt their feet and they're obviously cheaper and also come in a variety of sizes, the cage they showed is far too small, they need room to move.

    I have a pet hedgehog! I used to have 2, but recently one of mine passed away at the age of 3 almost 4 :( If any of you are planning to get a pet hedgehog, just know that they need so much attention, and they take a lot of work. Each hedgehog has its own personality, but if you want your hedgehog to warm up to make sure you give it lots of love!!

    they didn't even mention keeping them warm, you HAVE to keep hedgehogs between 73-80 degrees, otherwise they'll go into hibernation which is very bad, and if they don't actually go into hibernation, their liver could shut down. that's what happened to my hedgehog :(

It gave me alot of things to consider and I feel much more educated and confident in my consideration of whether or not owning this pet would be good for me. I don't have small children but I feel like the information you've provided will help parents make the right decision in whether to get one as a pet - especially with the special care and handling required. Thanks ladies, that was wonderful, here in the UK hedgies seem to be in decline as we see fewer and fewer of them at night, before, you would go out in the garden at night and see or hear them snuffling about and see their "calling card" on the path or lawn, hardly ever now.
    I thinke they are so cute and love their little faces and the way their hind legs stick out behind them when they walk.
    Thanks for super insight into these adorable little souls.

    I've had hedgehogs and I would also recommend you clean their cage more often than they cleaned theirs - That wheel was discusting.

    • @mrshhofficial
      @mrshhofficial 10 лет назад

      about how often?

    • @saratague
      @saratague 10 лет назад

      H H- At least once a week, but if the wheel looks really bad, clean it sooner.
      You have to have the plastic wheels, not the ones with the spaces in the bottom or their feet get stuck and it can injure them, but this particular wheel isn't a good brand for a hedgehog - It's curved and almost keeps the poop on the wheel. If you're going to have that kind of wheel, it's fine, but make sure to clean it more often.

    • @toadrocks619
      @toadrocks619 10 лет назад +1

    • @saratague
      @saratague 10 лет назад

      toadrocks619 Agreed. All depends on the bathroom habits of the hedgehog and the wheel. If you have to clean it more, clean it more. If you don't, don't. :)

    I usually let my Hedgie smell my hand first so he knows it's me. Then I use two fingers to keep him from totally balling up. Usually about two seconds later he's perfectly fine. He's also very cranky when I try to hold him during quilling. I've tried bowls for his food, and the Hedgie food (he hates it) and he prefers just to pull it under his floof bedding and hide it for late night snacks.

    I fed my first hedgie, Louie, quality dry cat food, he loved it, but he died after having him for a little over a year, not sure if it was because of the cat food, I read that once they become adults, the fish oil can cause digestive problems, don't know if that's true, my new hedgie, Chewbacca(Chewie), eats Hedgehog formula food and he loves the freeze dried mealworms. Btw, they shouldn't eat everything.

    I got a sweet little hedgehog the other day for my dad for Christmas. She's adorable and such a sweet heart. The first day we got her she was a very big grump. But she calmed down very quickly and now, literally like two days later, she's so sweet and snuggly and sleeps in my bed because she hates her cage. (She's a rescue and her previous owners kept her in a cage so small she could barely turn around so we think she hates her current cage because she's had bad experiences with them previously.

    is THAT a ''bigger'' bunny cage? what is a small one then 0,50 m by 0,20 m? what the hell man that cage is tiny! i wouldnt put any animal in such a small cage (anything bigger than a big hamster) i had a 1,20 by 50 meter cage for my bunny (wich is still way to small but he walked around the house 24/7 so his entire living space was huge) i was thinking of a similar sized cage for my own hegehog probaby even bigger but before i go out and buy one i have to see how much room i will have in my new house. also you should really be carefull with watter bottles and make shure they know HOW to use it.

    i had a hedgehog and to be honest it was the most boring pet i have ever owned. every time you tried to touch it he would puff his spikes up. the only thing good about owning a hedgehog is the fact you can tell people "eh, i have a hedgehog"

    • @Kasharicdaims
      @Kasharicdaims 10 лет назад +20

      That just means that Hedgehogs aren't the pet for you :)
      After time Hedgehogs will stop curling up, they won't "bond" per say, but they will come to understand that you won't hurt them and they become far less prone to biting, curling and are generally quite entertaining (for those that suite a hedgehog pet)

    Ok first of all meal worms are very fattening for them, they need crickets with their protein. At least 3-5 times a week (they're prone to obesity) and not those bottles because then they can stab their eyes get an eye infection and then their eyes will have to be removed. :-)

    We were told to get a see-through tub of 100 gallons for them to be happy and have room to move. These can be purchased at Walmart. Then a heat emitter lamp and bulb that does not shed light only heat, then, of course, a thermostat to make sure they are not too hot or too cold. We are getting 4 hedgehogs at the end of July 2021. Looking so forward to it ;)

    In the end, I don't get why people get hedgehogs? They poop everywhere; keep you awake at night; have spiky quills that hurt; aren't friendly; may get you sick 'cause of potential salmonella; they die after like 6 years...
    Does cuteness really make up for all of that?

    • @MyRennae
      @MyRennae 8 лет назад +4

      ***** Dogs can protect you and your belongings, they can learn to guide blind people, they are affectionnate (hedgehogs aren't), they live longer, they have a basic understanding of feelings (people who've had dogs know what I'm talking about, they're sad when you are and happy when you are)...there's no comparison. Try to make a point instead of venting.

      I have one. Her name is hazel and she's honestly a grumpy lil thing, but I love her to death. I love seeing her little face and her running around. I like to make eggs for her in the morning sometimes too. Cleaning her cage is a hassle but it's a must. She's like my child. You have your ups and downs but in the end, it's your pet and you'll love it unconditionally.

      That's kind of hard to do with the ones that've been bred in captivity for generations. They'd never survive in the wild.

    • @Tazzie1312
      @Tazzie1312 10 лет назад +26

      And that is how you end up with hedgehogs in rescues that have been "released" into "their natural habitat" and nearly died. Why don't I go buy you a kitten or a puppy and release that and see how well it fairs??? They're a domestivated animal, you idiot.

      I get the feeling you might not possess the mental acuity necessary to process this, so I will spell it out for you. My comment up there? That was the entire POINT. My point was that the ones that are already incapable of surviving on their own need to stay with humans, not that we should go and let them go just because they're hard to deal with. Well, it'll all be okay. You will learn to read eventually.

    You absolutely cannot have a hedgehog in a 2 ft cage thus is far far too small! Also bars and cages are NOT recommended any recommend breeder or well informed hedgehog owner will tell you this. A vivarium is most recommended as the have to be kept at a minimum of 21 degrees and a vivarium is the best home to contain the heat. you really shouldn't be advising other potential hedgehog owners if you don't know yourself 😞👎👎👎

    In Belgium you’re not allowed to have hedgehogs, but we found a baby in our backyard. It had a little wound and it seemed confused since it was walking around during the day. So we took care of him for a few days but eventually took him to a sanctuary because it was really difficult to keep cats away. I’m really hoping the doctor at the sanctuary will take care of him for now but will let us have him back when he’s better.
