- Note: This is not a real album! It may look like one, but it's not! This album cover was a school project I did a while back; we got to pick an artist and make a fictional album cover for their band! I of course...Chose the great Tatsuro Yamashita!
Recently, it came to mind that I wanted to make a city pop playlist with the songs I put on the album cover, and here you are! A fictional vinyl, with some of my favorite city pop grooves.
Enjoy~!

CORRECTIONS: Love Talkin' (Honey It's You) was released in 1982, not 1980. Love Space was released in 1977, not 1980. Small little dates that flew by my head while I was editing the video, whoops! Sorry about that!

I didn’t even know they were married until yesterday
I didn't know until today.
Now I didn’t know until your comment
😵😵😵😵😵
I never knew until now!!! Thats so perfect of course they were aww 💕
Tatsu produced Plastic Love.
the fact that this playlist has an "A side" and "B side" is hilarious to me and only deepens the illusion
Illusion?
Wait, never mind, it's a concept album. My bad.
Every song, "literally" EVERY SONG of this album is GOLDEN
People used to get mad at me and wonder wtf i was playing at parties ten years ago when i put on Tatsu on the regular, refreshing these days that even here in Sweden i often see people jammin out to him and other city pop legends at parties. Lets revive the 80s!
ye you cant play that stuff here in the west. People only want to listen to rap or edm on parties. There is nothing else
It still blows my mind that Japan had this much SOUL in the Bubble era! It sounds like so much funk and 80s black music I grew up listening to as a kid!
I wish I could have experienced the 80s economic bubble in Japan. What a time & place to have been alive. When people worry less about money, they spend more on art, which in turn drives artists to produce more art. Apparently City Pop is Japanese yuppy music, which makes sense considering the aforementioned bubble.
Jappo yuppy in the 1980s also loved Boz Scaggs. It was referred to as AOR (Adult-Oriented Rock) I think. I was totally on the UK rock back then and hated AOR but, it sounds cool now. Music tends to age gracefully.
They STILL have a lot of sould and there was no bubble era; the so called bubble eara started in 86... but there was no bubble era
@@amethegoblinThere was no bubble, and people still work on art and not worry about money.
When Disco hit America's music scene, Japanese musicians didn't follow. (Maybe they thought it was anti-music or something. ) Instead they took on funk, mixed it up with some pop and jazz, and created this fusion music called "City pop".
I believe it is fair to call this couple the parents of that genre.
At least that's how I see it.
That's so cute, I didn't know both Tatsuro and Mariya sing Morning Glory.
They've done covers of each other's songs too!
They literally are married, my guy. Music royalty in every sense of the word.
...Caught my eye! ...That '80s color blocking graphics WORKS! The cuts are "Ride On" ...Thank yall for keepin it LIVE!
I used to dislike city pop and considered it a weird fad, but after finding Yamashita I fell in absolute love with it.
It's funny, I guess I don't really know what the equivalent is but my wife hears this and groans because she was born and lived in tokyo for her first 20 years, and all she hears is grocery store music!
I've always suspected that the reason Westerners say that city pop / jazz fusion sounds like "video game music" is just because that's what was popular in Japan (especially among the composers) when those games were being made. This bolsters my suspicions: apparently it was common enough that it was used as background music at grocery stores!
Same reason why soft Jazz is regarded as elevator music, hm?
he's the goat. such a unique voice in an already unique genre
@@jayboo22if you love Tat's voice, you should check out Canadian singer Francesco Yates, whose voice is at least 89 percent similar, who sings funk/soul with great aplomb! ruclips.net/video/Ax_TOWUr0MQ/видео.htmlsi=as24Bm00OhSrbHlo
Mariya's vocals on morning glory are so good, they give the song a whole new vibe
I legitimately thought this was like a collection album until I checked the description, amazing job!
City pop might be my favorite genre of all time, I've been listening to it for almost 3 years now and now i listen to artists like Toshiki Kadomatsu,Omega tribe.Miki Matsubara and Maryia Takeuchi on a daily basis.
I'm gonna ramble. I always talk to people about music when meeting someone because I want to meet someone else who listens to Classic City Pop or Japanese Jazz Fusion like I do. To no avail though
Jazz Fusion/ funk / AOR Soft Rock ....
@@Eggroles777 Yeah i love it. the first citypop song i fell in love with was Yume no Tsuzuki by Mariya Takeuchi. then after that i was listening to her and a bunch of different artists in the genre.
Toshiki is my favorite. i've heard several of his albums, golddiger and after 5 clash are some of my favorites, momoko kikuchi's adventure is another favorite.
I like all music but there's something about that 80s vibe with the sweet synthesisers' love soul and funk as well. love teena marie and rick james but with city pop whether japanees or korean it's the music but it's also the vibes and the visuals too with the sailer moon and other 80s anime and old japaneese and korean media. it brings me to the past and makes me feel nostalgic about a time that i missed but it also feels futuristic like im experiencing a lost life in the present.
I would definitely check out Tomoko Aran. Especially her album Fuyu Kikan it's slower and a very good vibe
Where do you guys purchase city pop?
I HIGHLY appreciate you for making this "concept" album. I'm a fan of both, and to hear the songs I like in one album is amazing.
i haven't heard his music ever since 2022 (when he started deleting everything) finding this has been the highlight of my year I'm seriously gonna loop this LOL
why did he start deleting everything? that should be illegal to take something this amazing from us
@@Chris-gx4bc An argument with RCA about who had the rights to different songs, I think? Mariya Takeuchi also had a problem with her music being taken down because of the photographer that took the album cover shot for Plastic Love. Japan in general has always had a different view of copyright than the rest of the world. Just look at Nintendo.
Bruh, I didn't read the description and was looking for this album everywhere
The cover is very good
Very convenient that this playlist includes most of my favorites from Tatsuro Yamashita. Love the art style aswell!
Listening to this while driving in the countryside is one of the best experiences and fun I've had my life :D
This made me start looking into all of his albums. I’ve found so many good songs! Love tatsuro’s music
Morning glory is almost a masterpiece. Thank you. From one painter to another, absolutely fantastic design work. I would buy this in a heartbeat.
Almost?, I am curious what makes it so close but not
I'm torn between which version I prefer - hers or his! Both are stunning!
Imo, lack of intro. Kind of just gets into it. Feels like I'm watching a 90's sitcom. @@Eggroles777
wdym almost??
Yes man, Morning Glory is fantastic! I particularly prefer the version singed by Tatsuro Yamashita however Mariya Takeuchi don't disappoint!
11:15 This section I believe was used for a Maxell commercial. It was the one on top of a foggy mountain. Nice to hear it Clean and HQ
just wanted to say what a great poster and of course respect for choosing the great tatsuro yamashita
God I love ride on time so much. It hits so hard
This is sooo good.
Great idea and playlist! Love it, keep it up!
Great collection of songs, and album art to match. Well done!
dope project, dope art, dope mix -- thank you!
congrats bro, this school project is AWESOME. Really, really thanks to make me happy with this compilation
the morning glory cover is sooo good, had never heard it before. great work on the concept album
Love this! Absolute nostalgia! Thank you
Ah an artist with excellent taste, great work!
Enjoying this album. Thank you
Every video and song is a work of art. I love it all!
FUNKY~ awesome playlist!!
I downloaded this because i listen to this everyday and if i lost it to copyright i would be so sad
Tatsuro's people are particularly quick to get stuff taken down. I hope this stays up.
I hope so too, I really do. I won't be too surprised if they strike the hammer though...
@@scrimzo. thankfully I download hot mixes like this as soon as I find them, I would be devastated to go looking for this only to find that it had been struck down.
Beatiful project and song choice! I hope you've got a deserved 10. I couldn't believe tatsuro and mariya had an album together and i didn't know about it hehe
they were married :)
I thought this was a real album for a second lol. Really good job on the the artwork!
The album cover looks great !! Very suitable
Stellar job!
I would buy this album 100%! Great music
It's a great mix, and your project art is really cool. It really catches the eye. Excellent job!
This is my favorite fake album haha. I honestly love the playlist and all the songs. Amazing Job!
well done, thank you, its so easy to explore everysongs
Omg, thanks for this
Daydream is sooooo effin good
I love the cover you made!
A killer tracklist that I could see as a Greatest Hits album that'd've been released at the time, but I do kinda wish it was more balanced between Yamashita & Takeuchi instead of mostly the former & the latter's 2 most famous songs. Especially considering, y'know, *they're husband & wife*.
The fact that I thought this was a legit album is a testament to your work! Good on you for such a tasteful choice😎
Such a masterpiece congrats hope you got an A+++
Haha, I did, don't worry! Thank you so much!! ❤️
takes me back to when i first heard the saint pepsi remix of love talkin and stumbled into this wonderful world of city pop
Wow, as a school project, it looks pretty good.
Congratulations 🎉
Thus hurts my soul that there isnt a vinyl of this albumb
Love this, dude
A citypop album with a running theme! Love it! You should make more mixtapes like this!
39:10 How many days i tried to find this one.
This is giving me Jojo part 4 vibes, bro I love this!!
Sick album cover bro
That album art!!! I would love this in poster size.
One of my fav albums!😂
truly tho, this is epic🤩🎶
One of my favorites! ❤
City pop queen has a king!?
I love city pop so muche, im in love since 80s!!!!!!!!!
I love Tatsuro so much, he’s a genius in every sense, but Mariya ate his ass UP in her rendition of Morning Glory. Better than his honestly
How come this hasnt been removed due to copy right strike? My man tatsuro yamashita always strike down music playlists like this which sucks
This should be a real album... gets me through work day in and day out
Japanese City Pop is just amazing. In the West, we experience the same soundscape in Funk, Disco, and R&B. These artists have undoubtedly contributed to the genres and, in some instances, may have even done better than their Western contemporaries.
I hope JCP takes over the world
nice work, my dude
Tatsuro Yamashita is a miracle on earth 🥰🥰 Let's dance baby😍📢🎶
Nothing else I'd rather listen to while cooking for the holiday.
Morning Glory!
Classic and timeless
Who let you cook? Never leave the kitchen again🔥🔥🔥
Tremenda obra maestra 20/10 y GOD
nice art!!
Perfect album ❤❤❤❤
This was a tight fictional album.
many references from for you and i like it]
Excellent
Let's dance baby 는 처음들어보는데 무지신나네요.. funky cosmos!
Wonderfulll
Music for the soul!
14 :32 is such a beautiful guitar solo
I was here
When I went to Tokyo I was hoping this genre would be piped in everywhere,….alas it was not😢
I'm sorry I started laughing around 0:46 because I instantly remembered "WOOOOOOOO!!! MILF CITEEEEEEHHHHH!!!" I didn't expect it was this song 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Creating a playlist on Spotify would be GREAT!!!! nice one guy.
Tatsuro yamashita doesn't allow his music on Spotify 🥲
@@JoHow. Only "Pacific" from 1978 is on Spotify which has some Tatsuro Yamashita songs in there. Very odd choice not to allow your music on Spotify. With the city pop resurgence that started a few years ago, it's safe to say any extra income by having streams on Spotify is better than no extra income for material you've already made 30-40 years ago. Ah well. Maybe he just has a fundamental issue with Spotify in terms of how they treat their artists. It is interesting to see Universal Japan catching up on the Citypop resurgence and doing official releases on YT of stuff like say Flyday Chinatown from Yasuha etc. and then reprinting media.
Man I wish this was a vinyl
Merci mec ✌️
Suteki no music let's dance!
ive got a cd burner and qbittorrent and im gonna make this album real and listen to it on my cars cd drive
maybe in a stereo too
Let's make funky night🕺
plastic love hit me like iron
Where could I find this version of Merry-Go-Round? It's absolutely fantastic
Helloo!!
This version of Merry-Go-Round was featured in the live album titled "Joy." Another viewer had a similar question too haha!
Below is a link on information about the Joy album and a Soundcloud link where you can listen to the individual track. Enjoy!

If you like Yamashita try Toshiki Kadomatsu, he is also great!
sick fucking school project man wish i had one like that
Isso aqui é bão hein Sara
Another vid that uploaded Merryg0round got removed 😢😢 this is literally the only vid I found with that song in it
Love talkin really funk
Tatsuro Yamashita ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍
I'm willing to buy his whole album since it never exists on spotify 😭
3:34 I wonder if he Sonic CD JP Palmtree Panic loop was inspired off of this?
Edit: 43:57 sounds sort of similar to Neo Green Hill Zone Act 2... 🤔
