You have to hunt for good music, and it's well worth it. I promise.

Well, not all her songs have transcended time. Think about it. How many of her songs have you heard on the radio in the last 2 years? I don’t know about you, but I have never heard many of her biggest hits like Dreamlover and One Sweet Day anywhere but on RUclips in the last 6 years. Another instrument that "All I Want For Christmas Is You" makes use of, is the electric bass guitar. This same instrument is also audible in Sepultura's 1989 hit "Inner Self". It's amazing how many genres Mariah Carey manages to blend with just one Christmas song.

In my opinion, part of the reason to the success of this song is that it was an honest yearning for both the unnamed person and for a good and happy Christmas upon which it is built. Of course it helps that Mariah and Walter had incredible working chemistry as is evident in Mariah's catalog. Additionally, Mariah has said time and again that she loves Christmas and early in life had a yearning for festive holidays due to a difficult childhood experience.
Wow I've learnt a lot about music from this video and how genius it is to write a classic. I always questioned why this song caught on more than other current Christmas songs.

not to be annoying but i think its also because of how christmas is way more of a commercial holiday than it used to be when they made all those christmas classics. a lot less people celebrate it too so the demographic isn't the same for a christmas song to chart well enough. this makes it even more amazing that mariah could do this

She wrote and sing her Xmas album with heart. Coz growing up she never had a wonderful and nostalgic Xmas. They have a dysfunctional family.
Walter and Mariah also wrote "Hero" together. It's amazing how they created timeless songs.

The whole album, "merry Christmas II you" is great. Maria's opera singer mother even sings a song. Critics were really nasty, but it's my favorite Christmas album. (And I don't own any other album of hers.)
I love MCII too, it's criminally underrated, but honestly critics were never kind to Mariah. Caution is the first time she received positive reviews, but that's expected when you surpass your time - it takes time for small minds to catch up.
At some point I even cant choose whats the best between her first and second xmas album

I must have first heard this in the 90s when it was released, but it was not till sometime this century that I discovered, to my surprise, how young it was. It sort of inveigled its way into my life and let me just assume that it was a much older song that Carey had successfully covered. Once I accepted the truth, I was so much more impressed with this song-writing effort.
Part of its appeal for me is those soulful backing vocals. They are so memorable that, if you don't want to sing lead, you can just sing backing, and it makes shopping that bit more fun. :)

The thing is, AIWFCIY and Last Christmas are both classics. Its just that last christmas sounds very 80's because of the synth (?) while this song can be released today and still pass as new. Its sound is timeless. No reference to modern culture at the time, no heavy usage of prominent instruments back then, just pure sounds that can be attributed to christmas.
I've always wondered this but the 90s were a more creative time. Still it's amazing that only one song reached this sort of level in 25 years. I remember the year this song came out. It was all over the radio in December 1994.
